Fabelhaven
Fabelhaven | Brandon Mull

I loved listening to Fablehaven! This book is a thrilling adventure through a magical world, full of mystical creatures and hidden secrets. The story is captivating, and the characters, especially siblings Seth and Kendra, are a delight. But a word of caution: the audiobook narrator could put a caffeinated squirrel to sleep! Best to stick with the written word for the full, magical experience. 📚✨

I read books to suggest to my students. A sister and brother are dropped off at their grandparents secretive preserve that is surrounded by mystical creatures. Promising book #1 in this series.

Lots of double crossing in this one, geez! Seth was not as terrible in this one but still does not know how to follow rules. Kendra has all kinds of fun powers now. More characters like Tanu, Coulter, Vanessa, Sphinx, and Warren. It‘s interesting that Ruth and Stan are the caretakers of Fablehaven and yet they aren‘t able to do much to protect it or themselves or their grandchildren...

This is the second time I‘ve read this because I have now promised that I will read the rest of the series even though I can‘t stand Seth. I get extremely frustrated that Seth has no impulse control or sense of responsibility whatsoever. He is completely selfish. If I put that huge problem aside, Kendra (the rule follower and selfless sister) does save the day, and the world that is created is compelling.

Catching up on a few reviews: I think this is intended for younger readers but the adventure of it was still good. The writing wasn‘t the best but the plot and setting made up for it. I‘m continuing the #series now with the next book!

Fiction: The character that taught me the most is Kendra. She taught me the most because of her curiosity throughout the book. Even though she's smart, she still had inquiries and questions about her grandparents' house due to the weird things that were happening there. Kendra taught me to not be afraid of not knowing specific things. She made me realize that it is okay to have questions and not be embarrassed by the lack of knowledge you possess.

Fiction:Based on what I have read so far, Seth Sorenson (one of the main characters in the novel) taught me to be a risk-taker. He risked his life to go through the woods even though it was prohibited by his grandpa. His journey through the woods has been nothing but fun and adventurous. He discovered things in the woods that were peculiar such as the “large square of ivy“ he stumbled upon. I want to explore things that would require taking risks.

Fiction:The connection between this book and my life is the personality of Seth Sorenson. Seth is very curious like me. He took the risk to go through the forest which was forbidden according to his grandpa. I wouldn't do something as risky as the decision he made just because of my curiosity. If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't go through the forest because I know the consequences I'd have to face after my grandpa finds out about it.

I love that my almost 9yo loves to read. But I love it even more that this was a book I had to convince him to read. I had left it lying around, hoping he would pick it up himself. I read aloud the 1st few pages to the 6yo, hoping it would pique his brother‘s interest. Finally I said, try the 1st three chapters ok? That‘s your homework for this afternoon. And he couldn‘t put it down. Today, he‘s reading it again.

I am in love with this series!

This first book starts out a bit slowly but then breaks into a full gallop. It is engaging, and fun, with a good dose of seriousness. Brandon Mull combines real life with fantasy in a way that makes me question my own grandparents farm

This is my son‘s favorite author and series. He‘d been bugging me to read it so finally I said I would if he read The Hazelwood, which he had been resisting and still hasn‘t finished. I really enjoyed this story. Mull is a good writer and the adventures and fantasy in the book are well done. I can see why my son enjoys it so much. Now he‘s bugging me to read the next in the series! I definitely recommend for middle grade fantasy readers. ❤️

Ugh.
I liked the action, but what I didn‘t like was much longer: fat shaming, ageism, and, yes, racism. Europeans who “save” the indigenous people, people of color referred to as “exotic.”

Also, one character always making all the bad decisions is boring. The impetuous boy and perfect girl trope 😖

I had to read this one for #oregonbattleofthebooks2020 but usually I would have put it down instead of finishing it. On to better books.

Change of pace for pedi time 💅🏼

LibrarianRyan I liked this book but I felt it was so close the The Spiderwick Chronicles. I need to give it a reread and finish the series. 6y
kgriffith @LibrarianRyan which I haven‘t read, but have heard of so often 😊 What I love about this series (besides that it‘s a fun romp) is that the books grow with the readers: the vocabulary and emotional complexity both increase from one book to the next. I love Rick Riordan, but his books strike the exact same note on reading level, IMO: it‘s good for some middle reader/YA books to maintain a reading level for accessibility, but some should grow. 6y
LibrarianRyan @kgriffith I agree about LT staying one grade. Spiderwick was for beginning chapters. A bout 2 steps above Magic Tree House. The first series was much better than the second. 6y

I have adored this series that was given to me awhile ago by @Madamereginald So now every time I see them in the thrift store for 50 cents a piece I grab them because I love to give them to people so they can experience the adventure that lies inside!!! When I find books I love, I tend to start giving them as gifts to others. It‘s hard to contain my excitement sometimes! ❤️📚

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn‘t feel especially engaged in the first half of this book. The second half was more exciting & adventurous, which improved my overall opinion.

The premise is definitely intriguing & I think a younger version of myself would have enjoyed this a lot more. I liked the author‘s descriptive language and the fact that he created an unlikely hero. I was, however, often annoyed by the main characters & felt some of the dialogue was cheesy.

LibrarianRyan I felt the same way. For me It was just an older version of the Spiderwick books. 6y

This book is great so far! I started reading it as per request of my friend, and I don‘t regret it. The only thing I don‘t like is that the book is in third person POV. The book is basically about these two siblings who stay with their grandpa while their parents are on a cruise. The longer the kids stay there the stranger things get... 13/10 I would recommend!

I read this along with my 11 yr old, Jack. He started it, then said to me "I NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THIS STORY! WILL YOU READ IT WITH ME PLEASSSEEE?" #bestillmyheart

Super fun story! Fablehaven is a preserve for the conservation of magical beings, but things get a little crazy. Jack said this is now his favorite book. I adored it.

My copy is on the left, his is on the right. Ongoing discussion at my house over which cover is the coolest.

TheLondonBookworm I'm inclined towards the one on the left! Hehe I always want a reading buddy, it makes it more fun! 8y
Leniverse I also prefer the one on the left. I'll have to ask my 10 year old what she thinks, and also if we should add this to our reading list! 8y
