Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047
Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047 | Lionel Shriver
With dry wit and psychological acuity, this near-future novel explores the aftershocks of an economically devastating U.S. sovereign debt default on four generations of a once-prosperous American family. Down-to-earth and perfectly realistic in scale, this is not an over-the-top Blade Runner tale. It is not science fiction. In 2029, the United States is engaged in a bloodless world war that will wipe out the savings of millions of American families. Overnight, on the international currency exchange, the almighty dollar plummets in value, to be replaced by a new global currency, the bancor. In retaliation, the president declares that America will default on its loans. Deadbeat Nation being unable to borrow, the government prints money to cover its bills. What little remains to savers is rapidly eaten away by runaway inflation. The Mandibles have been counting on a sizable fortune filtering down when their ninety-seven-year-old patriarch dies. Once the inheritance turns to ash, each family member must contend with disappointment, but also as the U.S. economy spirals into dysfunction the challenge of sheer survival.Recently affluent, Avery is petulant that she can t buy olive oil, while her sister, Florence, absorbs strays into her cramped household. An expat author, their aunt, Nollie, returns from abroad at seventy-three to a country that s unrecognizable. Her brother, Carter, fumes at caring for their demented stepmother, now that an assisted living facility isn t affordable. Only Florence s oddball teenage son, Willing, an economics autodidact, will save this formerly august American family from the streets. The Mandibles is about money. Thus it is necessarily about bitterness, rivalry, and selfishness but also about surreal generosity, sacrifice, and transformative adaptation to changing circumstances."

I appreciate what Shriver wants with this book: it describes the downfall of the US in a near future: the dollar becomes worthless, the economy collapses, etc. What follows is an exploration of possible outcomes of this downfall. The family Mandible is just a tool necessary to discuss the situation. But it didn‘t work in my opinion. Dystopian fiction is not the best choice, an essay would have been better although I probable wouldn‘t have read it

squirrelbrain 😕 I‘ve never really fancied this one, and even less so now! 2y

Cinfhen Congrats for getting through this one! I tried several times but never could. 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I totally understand. It was more like an economical discourse in which I‘m not really interested. But I had a long cat drive and the book on audio, which made it doable 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Don‘t bother then! Like I said to Cindy above, it is mostly boring! (edited) 2y
Cinfhen Yeah. Audiobooks can make lots of bad books more bearable 😁 2y
Megabooks I bailed on this, so I was curious whether you‘d like it more! 2y
Megabooks Guess you didn‘t…😵‍💫 2y
Eva_B I guess I‘m in the minority but I really liked this one. I kept thinking about it long after I finished reading it. I felt a bit spooked reading it as an alternate future. The currency sounded like Bitcoin to me. 2y
BarbaraBB @Eva_B I read a lot of good reviews, I don‘t think you‘re a minority. It is a convincing and plausible story. Mostly I enjoy these kind of books but here were so many conversations about finance currency (the bankers made me think of bitcoin too) that I lost interest. 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I didn‘t know you bailed! If I knew I probably wouldn‘t have tried. 2y

#TimbitTunes #MoneyCityManiacs I‘ve owned the tagged book for a few years and recently after several attempts to read it, I finally gave up. I donated the book to my local library 📚🏛It‘s meant to be a scathing look at the not so distant American future where water is scarce and the economy is in despair (sound super plausible 😫) Now that I‘m describing the plot, I‘m a little sad that I gave the book away.

TrishB 😂😂 I have it on my kindle (surprise, surprise!) not been drawn to it yet.... 6y

Cinfhen I‘m such a fan of Lionel Shriver @Tex2Flo but for some reason this book was just too snarky... I‘m going to have to stand by my decision that it was meant to be shared @Cathythoughts 6y

I loved The Post-Birthday World by this author, but this economic dystopia was as irritating as its many disagreeable characters. Shriver imagines a near future in which no one reads books and reputable news sources have ceased to exist, the Latino population has taken on a dominant cultural role, and the US economy has gone the way of Maduro's Venezuela. Ultimately, Ayn Rand fans might like this book. I didn't.

There was a lack of character development partly because there are so many characters, and partly because she simply covers too much ground, thus the story becomes ineffective and misses the mark. I did appreciate her cheeky humour, but feel I may have missed a lot of the subtle nuances that make Shriver great because I simply checked out.

Not impressed. This was a real slog to get through, primarily as it involves a lot of jargon-heavy theory crammed into the dialogue of characters who presumably don't all have a PHD in economics. A little show over tell would not have hurt this novel. I cared very little about the fate of the Mandibles as a result.

BookHermit Ah, thank you for saving me the slog. Sounded like such a good premise but I‘ve read many similar reaction ms in reviews. 7y

All-too-believable dystopian vision of the US after an economic collapse in 2029. Given the economic situation in 2008 (which inspired the author), and the frustrations of many people even today, parts of the novel felt like a natural progression, and perhaps not as far away as 2029. Also serves as refresher for Econ 101. Recommended.

This book is brilliant. It is a scarily real glimpse into the possible future of the world. If you have ever wondered what would happen if the US economy collapsed, read this book. This book is frighteningly plausible. It kept me on edge the whole time I was reading it. And it was in the back of my mind when I wasn't reading it. It is very relevant to the current political and economic climate of the world. Great book I would highly recommend.

Putting this aside for now. Not a concrete bail yet, but there's a reason I only took one semester of economics in college: I don't like it. There are whole sections of economic theory that go over my head, and I'm not sure there's enough character development to overcome that. 🤔

The concept of this book was interesting and Shriver did a fantastic job with research to make the distopian United States economy seem real. But I felt it was too bogged down by economic content and the narrative dragged. It began to be hard to pick it back up. Not my favorite but a worthy attempt.
