Gilded Hour
Gilded Hour | Sara Donati
The international bestselling author of "Into the Wilderness "makes her highly anticipated return with" "a remarkable epic about two female doctors in nineteenth-century New York and the transcendent power of courage and love The year is 1883, and in New York City, it s a time of dizzying splendor, crushing poverty, and tremendous change. With the gravity-defying Brooklyn Bridge nearly complete and New York in the grips of anti-vice crusader Anthony Comstock, Anna Savard and her cousin Sophie both graduates of the Woman s Medical School treat the city s most vulnerable, even if doing so may put everything they ve strived for in jeopardy. Anna's workhas placed her in the path of four children who have lost everything, just as she herself once had. Faced with their helplessness, Anna must make an unexpected choice between holding on to the pain of her past and letting love into her life. For Sophie, an obstetrician and the orphaned daughter of free people of color, helping a desperate young mother forces her to grapple with the oath she took as a doctor and thrusts her and Anna into the orbit of Anthony Comstock, a dangerous man who considers himself the enemy of everything indecent and of anyone who dares to defy him. With its vivid depictions of old New York and its enormously appealing characters, "The Gilded Hour" is a captivating, emotionally gripping novel that proves Sara Donati is an author at the height of her powers. A "Seattle Times" Best Book of 2015!"

There was no wind down or wrap up or epilogue. It just abruptly ended. Sure, there‘s a second book. But there was way too much left up in the air at the end of this one. And after 31 hours (audiobook edition)! I was very annoyed. That turned it from a pick (3.5/5) to a so-so.

The book also had trouble with its identity. Mystery? Romance? Courtroom drama? Family story? Historical novel? #nutsinmay

An interesting and infuriating* novel about two women doctors in 1880s NYC. There are some great side stories going, too.
But it is dragging on. Holy moly. 21 hours in. 10 to go.

*It‘s infuriating how women were treated.

I finished!! Over 700 pages of life in 1880‘s NYC thru the eyes of two female physicians, one black and one white. I loved the focus on medicine during that time, especially women providing it and women receiving it. I didn‘t expect the story to have so much mystery, but as things progressed, I really loved that angle. There are still a couple of things unfinished, so I‘m glad I grabbed the second book before the library shut down. #chunkster

Maria514626 It‘s crazy to read how women were treated not too long ago. Yikes! And Comstock! 😡🤯 5y

I‘ve seen some people say this book is too detailed, too descriptive, could have been shorter etc. But that sort of drew me to it. I LOVE being immersed in a really long, all-encompassing story. Started it earlier today and I really do feel like I‘m a female physician inside of 1880‘s New York City.

Over 700 pages!! #chunkster

RaimeyGallant Oh wow, this sounds fabulous. 5y

This 742-page saga went faster than I thought it would thanks to an interesting and compelling hodgepodge of storylines. Set in 1880s NY, it boasts both a romance and a mystery and touches on women‘s rights, racial/ethnic/social inequality, and political corruption. It centers on two women doctors, their struggles/triumphs in their vocation and their steadfast support system of family/friends. I enjoyed it but felt it was just too long. 4.5/5⭐️

Crazeedi Agree, good one! 5y
robinb @Crazeedi 👍 Now on to the sequel which is a measly 670 pages...🤪😩🤣 5y

I‘m torn about this one. Lots of great details about 19th century family planning and the persecution of women by Comstock. The plot is both too complicated and too simplistic, and the writing is not the best. The sex scenes are particularly tepid, and every sentence could lose 10% of its words and be stronger for it. As a result, I struggled to sustain interest and I likely won‘t read the sequel.

Crazeedi I liked this one, actually I've read several of her books and have enjoyed. But I get what you are saying 5y

As a milliner myself, I always think about the lives and careers of women who worked in hat shops in earlier times. This is just a peripheral character, a patient in the hospital, but I loved reading a little glimpse into her life.

I am 90% loving this book, but the romantic relationship is expressed with such cheesy language but every time those two characters interact, I have to just skim through it so my eyes don‘t fall out of my head from rolling. But all the stuff about 19th century birth control is fascinating!

The main reason I wanted to read this is that the author lives in my town and I see her at the dog bar a lot (yes, my town has a dog bar) and her dog and my dog like to play together. I gave up after 4 hours. It wasn't bad, but not much was happening and I think there are better ways to spend 30 hours of my time. #dnf

annahenke It's so good!! And the family featured is distantly connected to the Bonner family, which is from Sara Donati's Into the Wilderness series. I recommend both the series and this one! Although I liked Gilded Hour best. There is a Fraser cameo in one of the Into the Wilderness books! 8y

I loved this book! I was hooked by the end of the first chapter! This book has all my favorite things: historical fiction, strong women, romance, and mystery. Plus, I often had to remind myself that the book is set during 1883. It amazes me that so many issues of that age are still relevant today. It's a great look back at life in NYC during that age. This is the first in a series, so there are a few loose ends!
