The Night the Lights Went Out
The Night the Lights Went Out | Karen White
80 posts | 49 read | 61 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street series comes a stunning new novel about a young single mother who discovers that the nature of friendship is never what it seems.... Recently divorced, Merilee Talbot Dunlap moves with her two children to the Atlanta suburb of Sweet Apple, Georgia. Its not her first time starting over, but her efforts at a new beginning arent helped by an anonymous local blog that dishes about the scandalous events that caused her marriage to fail. Merilee finds some measure of peace in the cottage she is renting from town matriarch Sugar Prescott. Though stubborn and irascible, Sugar sees something of herself in Merileesomething that allows her to open up about her own colorful past. Sugars stories give Merilee a different perspective on the town and its wealthy school moms in their tennis whites and shiny SUVs, and even on her new friendship with Heather Blackford. Merilee is charmed by the glamorous young mothers seemingly perfect life and finds herself drawn into Heather's world. In a town like Sweet Apple, where sins and secrets are as likely to be found behind the walls of gated mansions as in the dark woods surrounding Merilees house, appearance is everything. But just how dangerous that deception can be will shock all three women....

Recently divorced, Merilee Talbot Dunlap moves with her two children to the Atlanta suburb of Sweet Apple, Georgia. EadieB In a town like Sweet Apple, where sins and secrets are as likely to be found behind the walls of gated mansions as in the dark woods surrounding Merilee's house, appearance is everything. But just how dangerous that deception can be will shock all three women. 2y
EadieB The Night The Lights Went Out alternates between 1930's depression era Georgia and 2016 Sweet Apple Georgia. There are 3 leading ladies; Merilee Talbot Dunlap, divorced single mom, Alice Prescott Bates, Landlady Sugar Prescott, and Heather Blackford, socialite and beautiful. 2y
EadieB It is full of humor, southern charm and wisdom. It is also engaging and entertaining. There are friends to meet, stories to uncover, secrets to share and mysteries to solve. A really great book. 2y

This was my last read in 2021 and it was a good one! Merilee moves her kids to a suburb of Atlanta and rents from Sugar Prescott a very formidable woman. When a blog starts to dish the dirt on Merilee 's divorce she finds help from Sugar. There are lots of secrets going around this town and things start to turn bad for Merilee. It's got it all romance, murder and drama.

Reading this via audiobook which makes it extra fun! Was hesitant at first having not read Karen White, but glad I jumped in. My new favorite phrase is, “Well bless her heart”. This is the best transition to use before slapping someone with an insult.

SO GOOD. Long story short - Southern charm with a little mystery & a lot of real life. I don‘t think I quite understood what this book is about when I started reading it. I expected some kind of love story - and it is, but not what I expected. Nor did I expect the murder. Somehow missed that little detail. Either way, I highly recommend reading this beautiful & beautifully written story.

Things aren‘t as sweet in Sweet Apple as they appear. The residents‘ true agendas run far deeper than you realize at the start. While I had one of the main characters pegged from the beginning, I would have never guessed how everything would conclude. It was easy to become invested in the characters and I anxiously awaited the next plot twists along the way. This was my first Karen White book and it most certainly won‘t be the last. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

2. I love my porch, but my favorite reading spot during the summer is anywhere our little travel trailer decides to land...preferably in the mountains.
3. I read during every spare moment, so stopping mid-chapter is annoying, but part of life.
4. I‘m mostly an e-reader these days for convenience, but love bookmarks for my print editions.
