Red Herring Without Mustard: A Flavia de Luce Novel
Red Herring Without Mustard: A Flavia de Luce Novel | Alan Bradley
120 posts | 179 read | 45 to read
"NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER Alan Bradley, author of the most award-winning series debut of any year, returns with another irresistible Flavia de Luce novel In the hamlet of Bishop s Lacey, the insidiously clever and unflappable eleven-year-old sleuth Flavia de Luce had asked a Gypsy woman to tell her fortune never expecting to later stumble across the poor soul, bludgeoned almost to death in the wee hours in her own caravan. Was this an act of retribution by those convinced that the soothsayer abducted a local child years ago? Certainly Flavia understands the bliss of settling scores; revenge is a delightful pastime when one has two odious older sisters. But how could this crime be connected to the missing baby? As the red herrings pile up, Flavia must sort through clues fishy and foul to untangle dark deeds and dangerous secrets."

I do really like Flavia De Luce. I was just in the mood for her lately and I like that I‘m at the beginning ish end of a long list of books to enjoy. Probably my favorite part of this one is the terrible relationship between her and her sisters and how they torture each other (sometimes literally!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read this a while ago (apparently 9 years ago 😳), but it works for the #spices prompt.

I adore these books. I know I've raved about them before, but the audio versions are just fantastic.

#2022Book24
Just like the first two books in the Flavia de Luce series, I absolutely loved this one. All of the characters are wonderful, the mystery is compelling, and if I have a daughter who isn't exactly like Flavia, then I'm sending her back!

First #CloakandDaggerChristmas book complete. Fun to revisit Flavia after many years. She is spunky. I ended up caring more about the people of Buckshaw and Bishop's Lacey than the actual mystery.

Flavia de Luce never disappoints 😊 A wonderful cosy mystery series set in 1950s England with a quirky 11 year old chemistry whizz sleuth, a crumbling gothic house in the country, and a surfeit of dead bodies. This might be the change of pace you need! I should really be reading this beside a roaring fire, but it‘s sunshine and icecreams at a cafe instead. #southernhemispherechristmas

Another excellent instalment of the Flavia de Luce books. I‘m loving doing this re-read on audio. Jane Entwistle could not be any more perfect as a narrator. Flavia gets up to all her old tricks again, bumbling the investigation and generally causing a ruckus. Love it!

BridgetteM I‘m not really surprised that the Bishop‘s Lacey folks didn‘t have a bigger reaction to Brookie‘s death. I think they knew he was bound to meet an untimely end. As to Flavia‘s remarks to Brookie‘s mom, I think it could probably apply to almost any villager since it‘s such a small place. 5y
Smarkies Generally most of the comments around the village was that he was generally a good for nothin' and therefore his death did not really affect many people. 5y
janeycanuck @Smarkies @BridgetteM Yeah, it didn‘t seem like they cared much about him when he was alive so not surprised his death didn‘t change things. 5y

BridgetteM I thought it was a bit awkward for the other members of the family. After a while I thought Flavia‘s dad was a bit attracted to her by the end of they dinner. 5y
Smarkies I didn't understand this bit at all.... It all seemed to be a bit awkward but this family seems to have a really stiff upper lip in dealing with things like this. 5y
janeycanuck @BridgetteM also, totally weird that this young woman just went into a random closet that she wasn‘t invited into... 5y
janeycanuck @Smarkies it was weird, wasn‘t it? For some reason, I thought she was quite young but she must not have been if she could fit into Harriett‘s clothes. 5y

Question 2.

#flaviabuddyread

BridgetteM Good question... maybe because it‘s predictable, unlike a lot of other things in her life. It also connects her to her family‘s past. 5y
Smarkies It connects her to her family's past. I think this book mentions how she has decided to sleep in this part of the house when she found out about it 5y
Smarkies Also, the rest of her family seems to have hobbies so this may be how she has decided to pursue hers. 5y
janeycanuck @BridgetteM it gives her a sense of control, I think. She knows what will happen, it‘s dependable and constant, unlike so much else in her life. 5y
janeycanuck @Smarkies yeah, sometimes I wonder if part of it is because she felt reading and music were already “taken” 5y

BridgetteM People tend to underestimate her@or they assume she is too young to understand what‘s going on. The inspector, I can only remember that his wife‘s name is Antigone, has learned that the hard way. He seems to be coming to respect her quite a bit. 5y
Smarkies Definitely! As @BridgetteM mentioned - they let down their guard against her because of her age and her supposed naivety. Only her family and servants really seem to know her depths. 5y
janeycanuck @BridgetteM @Smarkies So sorry - I‘ve been having a tough go this month with reading (like everyone else...) so am super late getting back to these posts... but yeah, agreed, Flavia is definitely underestimated because of her age. And she‘s able to get away with so much! 5y

Overall this is a pick, but I did find it a little busy. Still great fun. I love that Flavia is smart and figures things out while still being portrayed as an 11 year old girl that‘s sometimes silly, insecure, sister hater/lover and who also talks to her bicycle!

Sometimes Flavia makes me wonder if there isn‘t any mishap or unusual situation she hasn‘t gotten into. At times this story was over the top, yet it was so much fun. I‘m looking forward to the next book in the series, but I‘ll wait a bit, as there‘s only so much of an 11 year old, chemistry-loving amateur sleuth I can take at a time 😄

Book 3 in Alan Bradley's Flavia Daluce series was another hit 😁 I've really enjoyed listening to the series and watching the character development from book to book. This book had a little bit more info about flavia's mom and some touching bits here and there. Hopefully as the series goes on I'll get to piece together a little bit more of that backstory.

Chellebearss @RaimeyGallant give it a shot. I struggle with female voices sometimes if they are higher pitched. I‘m going to give the print book a shot instead of the audio. I‘ve enjoyed the first two books. 7y
Chellebearss @Chronic_Reader I don‘t think I could keep going with it. I found the voice too irritating. I‘ll try the print instead 7y

leahbird Oh too bad. I love Jane Entwhistle as Flavia. I'm listening to the most recent, The Grave's A Fine & Private Place, right now. 7y
Chellebearss @leahbird that‘s the same narrator that I had and I just couldn‘t handle her voice. Oh well, I‘ll try print instead :-) enjoy your listening! 😀 7y
KateFulfordAuthor Just curious- for all readers - what does / does not make a good audio book narrator? I‘m considering doing my debut & have been thinking about what would make a “good voice” for Eve. Thanks all. 6y
Chellebearss @KateFulfordAuthor I think being able to do multiple voices and keep an even pace are big things. (I listen at 1.25 or 1.5 speed so an even pace is important). Some of the things that would turn me off are not things you could control really. I tend towards deeper or male voices as female voices can get too high pitched for my preference. If you made a post asking this question I bet you would get lots of respond! 😃 6y
KateFulfordAuthor @Chellebearss That‘s very useful - thanks for the thoughts 6y

Another delightful visit to the world of Flavia de Luce. In this one Flavia investigated the beating of a gypsy & the murder of a local thug. Again I find Flavia a pure delight to follow, old friends wonderful to revisit, & new friends delightful to get to know. Book three in the Flavia de Luce mystery series finds Flavia hanging out with gypsies and discovering some family secrets. Flavia is as brainy and know-it-all as ever. Another good narration by Jayne Entwistle. I admit I find Flavia to be a tad annoying, but it is still a good addition to the series.
