Libraries | Umberto Eco, Candida H๖fer

Nobody photographs libraries, those splendid and intimate cathedrals of knowledge, as beautifully as Candida Hofer. Her photographs are sober and restrained in feel- the atmosphere is disturbed by neither visitors nor users, especially as she forgoes any staging of the locations. The emptiness is imbued with substance by a subtle attention to colour, and the prevailing silence instilled with a metaphysical quality that gives voice to the objects, over and above the eloquence of the furnishings or the pathos of the architecture. This volume contains Hofer's famously ascetic images of the British Library in London, the Escorial in Spain, the Whitney Museum and the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris, the Villa Medici in Rome and the Hamburg University Library, among others. Umberto Eco introduces the collection with a witty reflection on the role of libraries in all our lives.

Pickpick

Slowly perusing this sumptuous tome of photographs taken in various libraries around the western worldโ€ฆ gorgeousness and stillness throughout. I would love to visit many of these libraries - some to revel in the beauty, others to see how they‘ve changed since the photographs were taken (mostly in the 90s and very early 2000s).

Nute Wow! Each is stunning!๐Ÿคฉ 3y

My husband is a carpenter working in some very upscale homes and took me to look at his latest job. This house is incredible! While he was closing up, I explored the library. This is a relatively powerful and respected financial leader in New England (the opposite of me๐Ÿ˜‚) but our book tastes? Identical! I kept saying โ€œI read that! I read that!โ€ I‘ve found my new best book loving friend whom I‘ll never meet! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Kind of like Litsy TBH! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

rwmg So husband says to homeowner, "Do you need someone to help you catalogue and expand your library?" 6y
Readergrrl I have to admit @rwmg to being more than a little jealous: dark wood, fireplace, rolling ladder, huge soft leather chairs, with a floor to ceiling window looking out across the mountains, but most of the books were clearly well-loved and worn, lots of thrift and library sale books, very well loved children‘s books clearly from their own kids to children‘s books that must have belonged to the owners. Absolute heaven! 6y
BooknerdsLife Wow! I‘d love to have books loving friends in real life like that with beautiful library at home so I could visit them all the time! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ“š But I‘m grateful for all the books loving friends Ive met here on Litsy & on Instagram too ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ“š 5y

Megabooks @Cinfhen No libraries in Israel?? If so, that just seems so different!! 6y
Cinfhen No, they have libraries but it kind of ends there. The selections in English are minimal and rather old, you can only check out 2 books (๐Ÿ˜ณ) on your account and there is no online requesting or interloan system in place. I spoke to a librarian and a lot has to do with publishing rights ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜ฃ 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Wow! Two books, no online, no interlibrary loan. Smh! Get with it Israel!! I can imagine why they have a small English section. I‘m sure you hear many languages everyday in addition to Hebrew. I‘d miss American libraries, too! 6y

1๏ธโƒฃ What kind of library? The answer is different if it's a local library or a rare books library. As a patron of research libraries, I'd say I'd save whatever book I'm pouring over at that time.

Ok you guys, this is embarrassing. I've lived in my current apartment for two years and have just discovered that there's a library a 15 min walk away ?. It's small and there isn't a huge fiction selection, but I'll take it! Operation "spend less" is looking up!

mrozzz Yay!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป 7y

dariazeoli @JaclynW there is a $50 annual fee but itโ€˜s worth it! My local library stopped using Overdrive last year. https://bpl.bklynlibrary.org/patron_card/registration.aspx?ref=outofstate 7y
JaclynW @dariazeoli Thanks! I'm going to have to look into this. I get frustrated by my local library online situation. I'm often 20th, 40th, or 70th person in line for an ebook or audio book. It is ridiculous! It should be more accessible!! There is just no excuse I feel in this day and age to have to wait that long for a book! (Yikes! I sound like a crotchety old lady! ๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿ˜‚) 7y

In early 1971 a childrenโ€˜s librarian in Troy, Michigan reached out to several notable people and asked them to write a letter to the children of the town to encourage them to visit the new library. She received responses from Neil Armstrong, Dr. Seuss, E.B. White and others! My state, Connecticut, hasn't been able to pass a budget. The Governor's proposed budget is looking to cut funding to local libraries. These cards are from kids from ages 8 - 13 advocating against these cuts. I love the graphics and their letters to their senator is so inspiring. It makes me so sad but at the same time proud to see our young kids fighting for what they believe & advocating for libraries.

#TBRtemptation post 1! This is an amazingly gorgeous coffee table book that combines libraries with one of the best photographers in the world. CH traveled all over the US & Europe to capture these magnificent images--the Escorial, the Whitney Museum's, the Villa Medici, the Pierpont, the Bibliotheque nationale de France, etc. And all of her pictures have zero people, for that glow of serenity and calm. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ๐Ÿ˜Ž
