The New Old Me
The New Old Me: My Late-Life Reinvention | Meredith Maran
13 posts | 13 read | 20 to read
For readers of Anne Lamott, Abigail Thomas, and Ayelet Waldman, a lusty, kickass* post-divorce memoir, one womans story of starting over at 60in youth-obsessed, beauty-obsessed Hollywood. After the death of her best friend, the loss of her lifes savings, and the collapse of her once-happy marriage, Meredith Maranwhom Anne Lamott calls insightful, funny, and humanleaves her San Francisco freelance writers life for a 9-to-5 job in Los Angeles. Determined to rebuild not only her savings but herself while relishing the joys of life in La-La land, Maran writes a poignant story, a funny story, a moving story, and above all an American story of what it means to be a woman of a certain age in our time (Christina Baker Kline, number-one New York Timesbestselling author of Orphan Train). ADVANCE PRAISE for THE NEW OLD ME: High time we had a book that celebrates becoming an elder! Meredith Maran writes of the difficulties of loss and change and aging, but makes it clear that getting on can be more interesting, more fun, and a lot more exciting than youth. Abigail Thomas, author of the New York Timesbestseller What Comes Next and How to Like It The New Old Me is a book I dont just want to readI need to read it. So does everyone else whos getting older and wants to live fully, with immediacy and enjoyment, which is to say, everyone. Anne Lamott, author of the New York Times bestsellers Bird by Bird and Some Assembly Required Meredith Maran is my new role model for getting older without getting old. Sometimes it was an adventure, but I made it to Gladstone‘s Library!

After I stuff my face with fish n chips, I‘m probably going straight to bed. I think I‘ll be able to sleep on this quite firm mattress. In any case, I probably won‘t finish any more books for September.

Nothing I read this month is going to be a favorite for the year, but the tagged book was my favorite for the month. More thoughts in comments.

Susanita At times the author is a “bit much,” but I think this was the older-woman memoir/story I was looking for earlier this year. 2y

I finished Fast Pitch in a day for #AAM once I panicked and realized I never programmed it into my plan.

I returned Darkling Halls to ILL but can get it again later when I‘m “not so busy.” 😆

I brought the cat book with me for the weekend, but so far it‘s stayed in my bag because I added the tagged book which was “assigned” for the conference I‘m attending.

#bookreport

Cinfhen What conference are you attending?? Being nosy 😉 2y
Susanita @Cinfhen It‘s a women‘s conference at my old school 2y

I finished The Dispatcher and I'm on to this #audiobook from the library.
I could really use some reinvention.

Meredith Maran moved to LA amidst a divorce she didn‘t want at age 62 and starting working for a company after years of freelancing. She tells the story of her total life change here that she basically dragged herself into kicking and screaming. Her choices were often frustrating and she has surprisingly little insight for a memoirist, but I just loved her voice and her writing. This was a really good round!

Librariana I love the title 😊 And love the idea of reinvention at any age. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 💜📚 5y

This book started slow but I'm glad I gave it a chance, I thought it was well written. I have to say though that I didn't love the author, I thought she was selfish and seemed a little immature for her age. But she may just be more carefree than I am. I sent this to you yesterday @Hooked_on_books ! @Wife @BookishBelle #lmpbc

Hooked_on_books Sounds interesting! I‘ll let you know when it arrives. 5y

#LMPBC @Shadowfat @BookishBelle @Hooked_on_books @suvata I finished this at work tonight and will mail soon. Well written and I wrote lots of comments, but you know, I just don‘t care for Meredith 🤷🏼‍♀️. The only thing we have in common is age. But as always, I love exposure to books that I would never have picked up on my own. 2/5⭐️s

I haven't been on Litsy lately because I am spring-breaking with the kiddos. Not much time for reading but I found this ARC on my phone and started it this morning.

This is not a typical feel good at the end memoir, which I appreciate. At the end of this book, you realize that happiness, love and life are a journey and not a destination because there is always something around the corner that will rock your world, for good or bad. It helps to realize that having it all together is a myth. Meridith Maran thinks she is making stupid mistakes, but she is just adapting to the changes in life the best way she can.

Another ARC. I really loved this book. This is a journey through the author's grief and it really struck a chord with me. It is a bit of a slow start, but I soon found that I could not put it down.

Really enjoyed this book! My favourite thing about it was the positive message that it's never too late to start over and build up happiness from nothing. 💙💚❤💛
