The author wrote of the exodus from Paris in such detail that it felt very close-in fact the Ukrainians came to mind- and, in the 2nd story wrote of Germans occupying the homes of villagers and the relationships that develop. Nemirovsky wrote this as it was happening and provides a candid look at class, at collaborators, at war. Her daughters, escaping as their parents are killed at Auschwitz, found within a suitcase these handwritten notes. 🔽

Worked my Friends of the Library shift yesterday. I try so hard NOT to bring home any more books! However, when a fellow Friend tells me that I should read this book, as it is on her top 10 of all time, how can I not say yes to the book?

The author wrote this book to share what was happening to every day people and their lives in France during the Nazi occupation. She herself passed away in Auschwitz and never saw this book published.

I haven't read it but it's been on my tbr for years.

But she was also a Jew, and in 1942 she was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. In 1942 Nemirovsky wrote these notes (included as Appendix 1) about the rest of the parts of this book. She only finished 2 of the 5 parts, having been arrested a month after writing these notes. She died in Auschwitz a month later. We are now much closer to 2052 than to 1952. #1001books

Starting this for book club this month. This is the second of three Nazi books of recent. I love the history but in This political climate...I‘ve heard good things about this one.

Half my stack for my upcoming #readyourgenes challenge! Scotland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal have arrived...waiting for Wales, Norway, Greece, Turkey, and Denmark.

This is really two different novels in one. I had read a review that said the second part wasn‘t as good as the first, so I stalled a bit. But, just goes to show you shouldn‘t believe everything you read, I think I preferred the second one...!

A wonderful work! It's heartbreaking that Nemirovsky was murdered by the Nazis before she could finish the whole suite. So many voices silenced. 😡 #booksintranslation #readingwomenmonth

The first 3 that came to mind for the prompt #womenintranslation - I looked for more, but it seems that the majority of my books in translation are by men. I'm glad to notice this discrepancy, now I can try to fix it :)

Though only two parts of the suite were finished before the author was taken from her family and killed in a concentration camp in 1942, the scale of this novel is still so grand. The setting is breathtakingly beautiful, the reactions to German occupation are raw, shocking, tender, brutal and real.
