FAIL! I tried Beard‘s sourdough starter & bread recipe. While the loaf is otherwise perfect, the subtle flavor was off putting. You could taste the sour milk. I was totally suspicious about using milk for the starter and letting it sit for a week at room temp - with no feeds either. 🫢 #Mtcookbook

Going to try again with Emilie Raffa‘s recipe. That had good flavor, but not enough rise. I‘m going to cheat and add yeast when I bake the bread.

julesG Milk?! In the starter? That sounds offputting. I followed the starter recipe from the tagged book and my starter has been great for months. Even when left unfed in the fridge for weeks. 4mo

Found this 1970 gem today. Beard thinks sourdough isn‘t worth the effort. 😂 Apparently different types of flours were hard to find then, so most of the recipes call for all purpose flour. Now it looks odd in a bread book.

mabell I tried the La Brea Bakery method for sourdough a couple of years ago, grapes and all, failed, then read Beard on Bread - I laughed at the sourdough opinion 😂 5mo
Tamra @mabell what an experiment! I didn‘t even know there was such a thing with grapes! I learn a lot from my “fails.” 🙃 I tossed my recent attempt at a starter (neglected it) and am going to try again. It is a bit of a babysitting job in the beginning. 5mo

I enjoyed reading these two cookbooks for #LMPBC

The La Brea Bakery book was way too much for me to attempt, but I enjoyed cooking from Beard on Bread.

I will get these packed up and mailed this week!

mabell I‘m so glad you enjoyed Beard on Bread! I marked quite a few recipes I‘d like to try. Due to the time spent on my failed sourdough 🙄, I couldn‘t fit in many before I sent it on, but I flagged the pages in my old copy so I can get to them whenever. And this reminds me, I never posted my review on this one! 2y

I used to make bread a lot, but lately the size of my kitchen has limited me to special occasions so I'm really looking forward to #3! As for next year, we may have bought a house, so we'll have to see what happens!

For #90sInJuly, I'm confessing I #Wannabe a bread maker! I buy bread cookbooks at book sales, religiously add bread making pins to my Pinterest board, and follow a few IG accounts devoted to bread making. And yet am still too intimidated to make a loaf. I keep thinking I need more education!

LibrarianJen @Jess_Read_This Yes actually! We used to check out cookbooks from the children's section at the library all the time and made quite a fun mess in the kitchen. He veered more towards baking while I liked cooking better. 7y

@Amyegia and I just set up some of our fav cookbooks on top of the fridge using these sweet new grisly bookends. (Yes, that is a signed note from Barack and Michelle, congratulating us on our wedding. Jealous?)
