Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas
Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas | Stephanie Barron
99 posts | 39 read | 56 to read
Jane Austen turns sleuth in this delightful murder mystery set over the twelve days of a Regency-Era Christmas party. Christmas Eve, 1814: Jane Austen has been invited to spend the holiday with family and friends at The Vyne, the gorgeous ancestral home of the wealthy and politically prominent Chute family. As the year fades and friends begin to gather beneath the mistletoe for the twelve days of Christmas festivities, Jane and her circle are in a celebratory mood: Mansfield Park is selling nicely; Napoleon has been banished to Elba; British forces have seized Washington, DC; and on Christmas Eve, John Quincy Adams signs the Treaty of Ghent, which will end a war nobody in England really wanted. Jane, however, discovers holiday cheer is fleeting. One of the Yuletide revelers dies in a tragic accident, which Jane immediately views with suspicion. If the accident was in fact murder, the killer is one of Janes fellow snow-bound guests. With clues scattered amidst cleverly crafted charades, dark secrets coming to light during parlor games, and old friendships returning to haunt the Christmas parties, whom can Jane trust to help her discover the truth and stop the killer from striking again? #Pemberlittens It's time for #JaneAndTheExcellentReadalong discussion!

*Spoilers in comments.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ & 2️⃣ - Combining these. Jemima and her outfits. I just love them! Mrs Austen was really fun in this one. Her calling James a spoilsport and a prig. And “Do not be waspish, Mary,” my mother suggested serenely. “It cannot recommend you to your friends, and must provide fodder for your enemies.”

Also James splashing Mary in the face with wine when she fake swooned.
1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ “The Aunts are faeries,” Caroline retorted snubbingly. Being an Auntie I love this line.

4️⃣ I'll take quiet with a book over charades and cranky people.

5️⃣ I couldn't be Candor I would be afraid of hurting feelings. But I could do an over the top Duchess Highinstep.

6️⃣ I'm fascinating by the Twelve Days of Christmas Celebrations.
1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ Imagining I was enjoying the gaities of Christmas with Jane was fun. Especially since it's been over 100F/37C most of the time.

In August we're off to London with Jane and The Waterloo Map. As we continue counting down to the Release of Jane and the Final Mystery. 🎩📖📚

I jumped in late on this one and didn't know it was the 12th book in the series. Having the idolized author Jane Austen as the detective in these series was such fun! A cozy yet well-researched holiday tale of murder in the world of Austen, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the actual 12 Days of Christmas and how they were celebrated as well as the mysterious deaths at The Vyne. If you love Austen, you'll enjoy this detective tale.

This is one of my favorites in the series. Goodreads tells me I first read over the 12 Days of Christmas 2018/2019. I had lost track of this series and hadn't read several of the middle books. Jane 12 made me want to reread whole series which I did with #JaneAndTheYear2020. It's become a Christmas Tradition. Looking forward to #JaneInJuly. 📖🎁🎄

This was my last audiobook in 2021 and my first in 2022. It was the perfect time for it! I enjoyed the descriptions of Christmas celebrations in England during the Period. Always love the language and manners of the time. Jane Austen as solver of murder mystery was delightful. Plot complicated. I do believe reading the print copy would have helped. Ended with a Children‘s Ball on Twelfth Night and thus, the photograph. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The author clearly loves re-creating Jane Austen's world and seemed to put more effort into describing Regency Christmas traditions than in creating a mystery. But it eventually got going and nothing was too obvious. It was pleasant and seasonal if a bit too slow and too long. Between a so-so and a pick.

I really enjoyed this audiobook! While it‘s definitely slower than the contemporary stories I‘ve been listening to lately I liked the old-fashioned feeling and the mystery at the heart of the story (which I didn‘t guess, which is always good). 🌟🌟🌟🌟 26 points for team #mistletoemaniacs #wintergames2021 . I read the first book in this series and was underwhelmed, but decided to give this a try since it‘s been on my radar the last few years. I DNF very rarely, but this is my first DNF of the year. I got 2 hours in and was bored to tears. The characters seem stuffy without much personality. Life is too short to read books you aren‘t enjoying!

I want to do this. Sadly I have no parlour clock that chimes. Will have to download some chimes for my phone alarm.

Our New Year's Eve/Day Traditions aren't changing that much. Never been go out on the town people. I do always dress up even to drink champagne at home. In a normal year I would invite a few friends. Obviously this year that's not happening. Food Traditions stay the same, just in smaller quantities. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig New Year's Eve - Raclette. Wonderful meal of potatoes & cheese with a side of pineapple that were first served in Switzerland. Heavy meal. Perfect for a night you're staying up late. Dessert is Commander's Palace
Chocolate Molten Souffles. ⬇️

fabulous Grits & Greens Casserole. Recipe is on her website or in her Beach House Cookbook. Grits, Cheese, & Butter. Served with Bloody Mary's. It's my favorite Brunch EVER! And it soaks up the Booze.

Supper is Blackeyed Pea Soup for luck. Served with cornbread. ⬇️
