The Garden Party and Other Stories
The Garden Party and Other Stories | Katherine Mansfield, Lorna Sage
Innovative, startlingly perceptive and aglow with colour, these fifteen stories were written towards the end of Katherine Mansfield's tragically short life. Many are set in the author's native New Zealand, others in England and the French Riviera. All are revelations of the unspoken, half-understood emotions that make up everyday experience - from the blackly comic 'The Daughters of the Late Colonel', and the short, sharp sketch 'Miss Brill', in which a lonely woman's precarious sense of self is brutally destroyed, to the vivid impressionistic evocation of family life in 'At the Bay'. 'All that I write,' Mansfield said, 'all that I am - is on the borders of the sea. It is a kind of playing.'

I‘m spending Friday Night with the audio version of this book and editing my vacation photos in the company of my cats💜 I‘m only just starting the book, but I love this editions of penguin classics - they have really good introductions and foot notes- super informative!

I enjoyed this collection of soul-stirring short stories. They focus more on characters and emotions than on the plot itself, but they are beautifully written and carry the unspoken burden of a poignant reality.

TheLudicReader The Doll's House is one of my all-time favourite stories. I al ays get teary at the end. Love The Garden Party, too. 11mo

A collection of 15 short stories. Most centers around everyday occurrences that may not be so common when they happen to you, both the good and the bad.

And that cover gave me autumnal feelings

I had a couple little dog butts in my sights while I read my daily short story. This 1922 collection is fascinating so far; dodgy in places (see: 1922), but very well-observed. I‘m excited to read more.

I loved these short stories. Published in 1922 but the writing is fresh and the dry observations of social mores apply equally today. Mansfield is wonderful on family dynamics, siblings (I loved sisters Jug & Con after the death of their father), a marriage going askew & a single woman in a park. Her prose is breezy (written when she was ill) & assured. Showcases the art of the short story: giving you a glimpse of a whole life from one episode.

Oh, WOW! I loved these short stories! I wrote about her in one of my final papers: it‘s like one of those advent calendars where you open up a scene, a room, and that‘s all you get. Just that one moment/day/event in someone‘s life and just like that, you‘re moving onto the next tableau. So lovely! I read this right when I needed it! 172/1,001 #1001Books

Researching some short stories for my class tomorrow. 🤓

I made us a charcuterie board with brie, cranberry chevre, gouda, salami, rosemary crackers & kalamata olives. This has been our favorite dinner lately. 🤤

Good job, everyone on the #readathon! @MrBook and I will draw the winners tomorrow (?) night I believe, so that's exciting! 😁📚

#LitsyClassics - so I've just got halfway with book number 13 and its an excuse to take a photo of A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,M,T. Thanks @Sarah83 as I've read some great books so far which i wouldn't have got to without the discipline of a challenge. The joy of books means ive gone to the future, stoneage, 19th century Yorkshire, early 20th century NZ, pre war Italy, 1970's america, 1960's Barnsley, and around the mid 18th century world, et al. 😀

Sarah83 Sounds great 😊👍 6y
batsy That sounds wonderful! I'm so far behind on this challenge but so far every book I've read for it has been pretty brilliant in its own way. 6y

#LitsyClassics M - i loved these beautifully crafted short stories. The author creates worlds which are vivid on the page and can completely turn the reader inside out with a sentence or incredibly placed word. From a family beach holiday, to a picture of class in the title story, a budding romance, to a maids thwarted life, a put upon husband to a wifes encounter with a dying man and more, they seem timeless as they explore the fragility of life.

hollymckie my dissertation supervisor was just talking to me about this last week! going to read it as research for my own creative writing dissertation, can‘t wait 😍 6y
andrew61 @hollymckie that sounds interesting - i tend to read for story and rarely reread so often think i miss the craft of the writer and subtleties of use of language - i hope you enjoy it and look forward to future comments. 6y
hollymckie @andrew61 it‘s true, you often miss these things the first time something is read which is such a shame when it is a particularly skilled writer and so much time goes into a book 6y
batsy Beautiful review and edition! I can't believe I've yet to read Mansfield; seems like a major oversight. 6y

I was sent the Boxwalla "Forgotten Women" series subscription box for review and I have to say it was a lovely experience. It included Katherine Mansfield's Garden Party as well as a box of shortbread by Unna Bakery. The cookies were high quality and delicious and the card with facts about Mansfield included some really interesting info. Love this sub box series they are doing and thought the experience was stellar.

The Garden Party and Other Stories is a collection, "filled with glimpses and glances that point to inexplicable emotions and intangible truths". Mansfield was loved & admired by authors such as
D. H. Lawrence & Virginia Woolf. She's regarded as a forerunner in modern short story. Unfortunately, she died, one year after the publication of this book, at the age of 34. #katherinemansfield #thegardenparty #shortstories #modernclassics #booksy

First book for #24in48 and I really enjoyed it! It's very realist, very literary fiction & focussed on character more than plot, but aside from maybe 1 or 2, I really loved all of the stories! It's one I think I'll keep on my shelf even after my course is over.

OMG I completely overslept before #24in48 and I'm so far behind!! 😱😱 Not going out tonight as well haha! 4:30 am bedtimes are NOT a good idea for reading.
Anyway, starting with this one first I think as I need to have it read by Monday and I think short stories will be good for my brain! Haha!
Happy readathon!
Ps: also tweeting (mb1098) and instagramming (sprinkledwithwords)

Book recommendation! In fifteen funny, colorful, poignant, and mysterious stories, the irreverent modernist Katherine Mansfield, a friend and contemporary of D. H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf, examines a range of themes integral to the human experience, from marriage, family, and death to duty, disillusionment, and regret in this commanding collection.
