Sirens | Joseph Knox
It starts with the girl. How it ends is up to DC Aidan Waits. Isabelle Rossiter has run away again. When Aidan Waits, a troubled junior detective, is summoned to her fathers penthouse home he finds a manipulative man, with powerful friends. But retracing Isabelles steps through a dark, nocturnal world, Waits finds something else. An intelligent seventeen-year-old girl whos scared to death of something. As he investigates her story, and the unsolved disappearance of a young woman just like her, he realizes Isabelle was right to run away. Soon Waits is cut loose by his superiors, stalked by an unseen killer and dangerously attracted to the wrong woman. Hes out of his depth and out of time. How can he save the girl, when he can't even save himself?

The post Infinite Jest book hangover is still lingering (I‘ve yet to finish a book this month), so I‘ve decided to try something by a new-to-me author. Here‘s hoping this will be the one that kick starts my reading for 2019.

I enjoyed this book but found it a bit difficult to follow and confusing about who was chasing / watching / beating up who! Maybe that‘s just because I speed read and don‘t concentrate on the details...

Thanks to @TrishB for sending it to me 😘

TrishB I think that‘s how I felt! 6y
squirrelbrain @TrishB - not just me then! I thought i was being thick, or maybe too naive about the criminal underworld.... 6y

Im going to catch up with a couple of reads.
This was a decent first of a new series of police crime novels set in my home city Manchester and very disconcerting to have a scene of crime just around the corner from my home.
I enjoyed it although DC aidan waits seemed to spend a lot of time rushing across the city with copious amnts of drugs in his system which i did doubt improved his efficacy. Still a decent page turner.

IReadThereforeIBlog I really liked the Bug. Thought he was more interesting than Aidan. 🙂 6y

Terrific debut crime thriller set in Manchester and featuring a brilliant twist on the "flawed cop" trope in Aidan Waits - damaged, dirty and disposable and therefore for the ideal man to infiltrate a drugs gang and find out which bent cop is helping them out. Things are complicated when a top politician enlists Aidan's help to get back his runaway teenage daughter who has taken up with the crime boss. Gritty, bleak, and totally enthralling.

Cathythoughts Sounds good 👍🏻 7y

She's Lost Control indeed...

Well this book floored me. An absolute Atrocity Exhibition. A tale full of Dead Souls, this is a dark, tough noir on the Interzone streets of Manchester. It almost has the vibe of that movie Brick but way more grim, and harder edged.

Side Note: The book is broken up by Joy Division album titles and I recommend listening to the said albums while reading. Or just put the song The Eternal on loop as it works perfectly

Loving this super dark noir tale of a disgraced cop so undercover he doesn‘t know which way is up. Each section is named after a Joy Division album and it‘s been fun reading with the corresponding album playing in the background

I think this is described as a gritty, raw detective book. I didn't really enjoy it. Not enough detective stuff and no characters I liked.
Trying to be too edgy just lost the story for me.
Liked the Joy Division references.
For a good Manchester crime series I would stick with Kerry Wilkinson's Jessica Daniel books.

jhod Oh No! You've read it! Sorry...! Will have a last minute think 7y
TrishB @jhod sorry 😔 I didn‘t like to say when it came up on the list! It‘s a chance we take really. I have read one other too I think! 7y

#bookmail signed first edition from Goldsboro. I forgot I ordered this. Nice surprise but I don't want to look at my bank account, as I ordered Homegoing last month and the money is still to come out my account. #litsomnia problems. I do most book buying around 4am. Not good

Joseph Knox's debut crime thriller is an assured piece of writing that effectively evokes Manchester's grimy underbelly but the plot offers nothing new and Waits is a curiously under drawn and somewhat bland character (as did the female characters) so that for all the drug taking and guilt the read ultimately left me unmoved and uncaring as to what happens to him.

Often times crime fiction is described as dark and gritty, but Sirens almost redefines those words. The city of Manchester provides a perfect backdrop for the plot, its bleak atmosphere adds to the dangerous and deadly criminal underworld. Knox is a superbly talented writer and this book is paced absolutely perfectly. I was utterly absorbed by every single page of this book and any crime fiction fans will not want to miss this admirable debut.

jackeyoh Im sold! Thanks for the rec! 8y
