Carpe Demon
Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon Hunting Soccer Mom | Julie Kenner
49 posts | 34 read | 13 to read
Kate Connor is your average mom with two kids, a husband, and one very big secret ... she used to be a Demon Hunter. Now retired, she's more interested in the domestic than the demonic. But when that demon attacks her in her kitchen, retirement is no longer an option. Like the saying goes, Carpe Demon ... and Kate intends to do just that.

Carpe Demon was a fun, light hearted read. What i imagine Buffy the Vampire Slayer would be like grown up. The first in a series.

Bookwormjillk I‘ll have to look for that. My daughter has a soccer game 2 hours away on Sunday and I need something to listen to in the car. 13mo
MissyD @Bookwormjillk fyi: there‘s no soccer in the book 🤷🏼‍♀️. But there is not any heavy spicy stuff either. Maybe mild cursing 13mo

As an urban fantasy reader above a certain age, I adore the premise: what if the vampire/demon/etc.-slayer weren't Buffy but Mrs. Summers instead? Great premise, but it needs something more -- without Buffy's clever dialog, or an early-middle-age version of its teen angst, it's just a demon-fighting Mom. Which: yay Mom, but for me it's just okay.

nanuska_153 I'm listening to the podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer, where they comment every episode. They made a comment about how we don't really see the art gallery where Buffy's mother works and how she could be living a secret life being an adult slayer 😂 4y

Here is another book that I wished had more character development. I also didn't care for the internal dialog the main character kept having with herself. If I read the word "schlep" in a sentence one more time I would have thrown something. Yeap, the prose was a bit lack luster. The plot was okay. I am chalking this one up as not my cup of tea. 3⭐

This was a cute little book about a retired demon hunter turned soccer mom. It had rather a Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibe but it seemed a little dry. I think I would have enjoyed it better if I hadn't read so many Stephen King books this book 😈 51pts

Woot, I finished our Team Read for #TeamHarkness!! I've read A Discovery of Witches three times already, so I wanted to go for a new book. I actually have this book somewhere on my physical TBR shelves... but audio just fits my life better these days. I liked this one, but won't continue with the series. I guess I love romance in my cozies, and Katie's already married. View my spoiler below on that point.
#Scarathlon2020 @StayCurious 51pts

MidnightBookGirl I found Stuart so boring (Stuart is his name, right?), that I was disappointed he wasn't a demon. Also... I feel like Katie most definitely owed it to him to tell him about her demon slayer days, you know, before they got married. 4y
MidnightBookGirl Also, I sometimes love a cozy, but a lot of them, especially ones not written recently, contain a lot of slut-shaming, homophobia, fat-shaming... etc. This one definitely has it's moments. Plus... Katie doing all of this behind her husband's back (despite the fact that I didn't like him and was rooting for him to be a demon), didn't sit well with me. I didn't find her all that likeable. 4y

Finished the #BuddyRead for #TeamHarkness & #Scarathlon2020 last night. I didn‘t hate it...but I‘m glad to be moving on!

This tale of a “demon-hunting soccer mom” was published in 2005 & feels like it: “cracks” about Kate‘s “size ten butt”, jokes about “slave labor”, & labeling suicide as a “mortal sin” (once* the official stance of the Catholic Church but still sad) were cringe-worthy & made the text feel outdated. It was campy & fun but...👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: (cont‘d)... the characters weren‘t exceptionally well-drawn & felt a bit one-dimensional (the teenagers are boy-crazy, the husbands are ambitious & work late, the best friend is stalwart & true, etc). I also saw the “twist” coming from a mile away (read: the beginning of the book — & I was right). Perhaps I‘ve just watched too much Buffy to be impressed or surprised by anything so similar (& yet...so far away). 😉😈 4y
monalyisha @StayCurious I‘ll be adding +51 to my total when I submit my points at the end of the week! Thanks again to you & @Clwojick for hosting! 4y
monalyisha *Oh, & here‘s an updated version of the Church‘s stance on suicide, as well, for those who were wondering if there‘d be any recent change or attempt to better understand mental health. After posting, I got curious; so, I googled: https://www.companionscross.org/articles-blogs/articles/ask-fr-francis-what-late... 4y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Glad to see the church‘s change of view. 👍 4y
AFrostCauseReads I felt the same way. And the homophobic remarks about being worried her son was watching a kids show with gyrating men and never letting him wear makeup or heels. Left a bad taste in my mouth 😔 4y

Catching up on Reductress headlines. This one spoke to me, given my current (tagged) read. 😅

There are some aspects of having religion in the text that I‘m really enjoying (esp. the Cathedral setting — stones, bones, & torches) & some things I‘m really not (insensitivity re: mental health [suicide is a mortal sin]; demons can‘t inhabit the faithful; doubt makes way for evil, etc).

Not exactly my cup of tea. It‘s cute and fun and I laughed out loud a few times, but am I interested enough to continue with the series? Nope. Fifteen years ago, demon hunter Kate Connor set aside her holy water and ninja skills in favor of diapers and minivans, but a new threat has pulled her out of retirement. This novel is silly and sweet and I quite enjoyed it, except for the demon voices on the audiobook, which are creepy as heck.

Okay, so this is only book-related because I was listening to the tagged audiobook when these flowers were delivered. Turns out that in 21 years of marriage, I had never mentioned to my spouse that I loved cut flowers in the house.
