I really needed a change of scenery to get me in the groove for #20in4 today so despite the order to avoid non-essential travel, I have made the bold choice to travel to the guest room. I‘m cozying up here for the day where I hope the dust bunnies and baskets of laundry don‘t think to look for me.

AmyG I‘ve done that. Enjoy!!! 4y
BiblioLitten Great idea! 4y

janeycanuck @AmyG @BiblioLitten @Julsmarshall @Kdgordon88 It‘s been like a little vacation from lockdown life! We should all take more #guestroomholidays! 4y
Andrew65 Hope you had a good journey 😂😂😂 We‘ve taken to spending some time in our Motorhome on our drive 😂 as a change of scenery as now been in lockdown mode since end of October. 3 LOOONNNNGGGG months. (edited) 4y
janeycanuck @Andrew65 You leave your house for vacation travels?! You rebel!! 😂🤣😂 We‘ve been basically in self-imposed isolation since October but only gov‘t ordered lockdown since Dec 26 and stay at home order since Jan 17 or so. It was easier be stay home all the time when we knew we could go out but didn‘t want to. (edited) 4y

Pickpick

"to describe the prosperous condition of their empire; and afterwards, from the death of Marcus Antoninus, to deduce the most important circumstances of its decline and fall, a revolution which will ever be remembered, and is still felt by the nations of the earth."

Edward Gibbon wrote possibly my favorite historical work, not because it is accurate (it is not) but because it encourages me to write history.

You know you're a history nerd when this is a fun read. 😂 My amazing wife @Rachel.Rencher bought me the Decline and Fall series and I'm super excited to start it! 😆

Rachel.Rencher You're such a nerd ❤❤❤ 6y
Lcsmcat I‘ve had these for years and keep meaning to read them. Maybe we need a buddy read? 6y
TheWordJar Lucky! I‘ve always wanted to read these! 6y
rwmg I've read it twice, once as a teenager and once in my 40s. A magnificent work. 6y
BookBabe I‘m so relieved they broke it up into different books! You wouldn‘t have been able to pick the thing up! 6y

I'm stopping #24in48
I'm going to have to listen to my body, and just quit the challenge; my disability and chronic pain is too severe today. I hit 13hrs and I'm over the moon about that. But I have no choice but to rest.
Good luck to all of you continuing, and I appreciate all your encouragement.

Mollyanna You did great! 7y
EllanaRose @Mollyanna - I appreciate you saying so, thanks! 7y
cobwebmoth 13 hours is more than I got last time, and I think it's still pretty impressive. Hugs! 7y

EllanaRose @cobwebmoth and @Andrew65 and @CouronneDhiver - Aww huge thanks all! I'm feeling a bit better now than earlier, so I'm seeing my progress as an accomplishment rather than a failure. 7y

My #KoboStats
Not bad! I'm still aiming to get to 500 hours total before the year is up. I think I can do it. Yay!
Oh and just a note - this is from when I first got my kobo a few years ago , this isn't this year.

I'm almost done with Roman History by Appian, but I am looking forward to finishing this monster of a book first. 150 hours to go, just 150...

Slowly, slowly... Still making progress but just very slowly. Any advice on how to get through very long books would be appreciated!

rockpools Wow! You need a #bigbookmonitor on your case! @Cinfhen (edited) 7y
Andrew65 @RachelO I think this post will be giving @Cinfhen nightmares. I would always suggest not thinking about the finish line or finishing it, just target a bit of it each day. (edited) 7y
[DELETED] 57804897 I used it as bedtime reading for months. 7y
xicanti When I've got a really long book I definitely want to read but don't want to properly hunker down with, I read it in chunks. Every time I finish another, less daunting, book, I read 100 pages of the chunkster. (Or 50, if it's SUPER daunting.) It still takes a while to finish, but it feels like less of an imposition. 7y
EllanaRose @RachelO - Not a bad idea! Might get a friend to nag me XD @Andrew65 - I try to not think about it, but I really want to finish it before I finish my MA. At this rate I'm likely to be doing my PhD before I finish this book! @Ostaff1 and @xicanti - Oh I like that idea! Reading a chapter before bed. I might start doing that. Thanks all of you for the advice! 7y

Thanks to a severe migraine (ugh) I've been struggling to get anything done. Today seems to be an improvement (yay) so I'm aiming to get the next chapter of this masterpiece complete.
I need to resume my progress with the #HRPGBingo so any recommendations for #Gauntlet (ie: a book with time travel) would be much appreciated!

TricksyTails What is this fun bingo thing with all the cute stickers? Please enlighten me! 😆 7y
EllanaRose @TricksyTails Of course! For more info check out the hyper rpg book club on Goodreads. Basically, each tile matches a show (and Kaiju the dog) on Hyper RPG. There's a reading challenge and a bonus challenge relating to each show and Kaiju. Example: I read Welcome to Night Vale for the #MotM slot, as shown by the waffle emote. 16 tiles, one tile a month. No need to watch the shows to take part. 7y
TricksyTails Thanks so much for explaining it to me! Looks like a lot of fun. Don't have GoodReads but I'll keep an eye out on your posts because this might tempt me to join! 😆 Thank you! 7y

EllanaRose @TricksyTails ... I picked Night Vale because it has comedy elements to it, just like Masters of the Metaverse. Last month I read for Ac Inc, and I picked up the series by Gail Carriger called Finishing School - it involves a group of people going on an adventure, but it also matched the bonus challenge of it not being an all male group. 7y
Centique Oh how about The Doomsday Book for time travel? 😍 7y
Centique Oooh or Kindred. That‘s an amazing one! 7y
EllanaRose @Centique Oooh thanks! 7y
DivaDiane @Centique Doomsday Book was my first thought for time travel. There‘s also The Time Machine, by HG Wells, if you want to read a classic that‘s not too long. Not sure, but Replay, by Ken Grimwood might also fit the bill. 7y
EllanaRose @DivaDiane Thanks so much! I'm tempted by HG Wells as I've never read his work. Thanks for the recommendations! 7y

So, I used one of my #Audible credits today on this slim book. ???! Reminds me of the "Home Alone" quote, "Do you give up, or are you thirsty for more?" ? Bring it ??! Anyone want to #buddyread this one with me ????? With an irregular schedule like mine though, I never know when I'll get to the next listening session, and I tend to listen at 1.25 speed.

Andrew65 That's good value for money. 😊 7y

I was pleased to find this on sale today. I've been having terrible insomnia lately, and a 1,300+ page history text seems an ideal soporific.

Anyone else out there combatting #insomnia with really boring books? What's your go-to?

Notafraidofwords Yep, I do that. 7y

The five marks of the Roman decaying culture:

Concern with displaying affluence instead of building wealth;

Obsession with sex and perversions of sex;

Art becomes freakish and sensationalistic instead of creative and original;

Widening disparity between very rich and very poor;

Increased demand to live off the state.

EllanaRose I've been trying to read this since I started studying classical studies a decade ago. One day, one day... 8y
