The Cricket in Times Square
The Cricket in Times Square | George Selden
After Chester lands, in the Times Square subway station, he makes himself comfortable in a nearby newsstand. There, he has the good fortune to make three new friends: Mario, a little boy whose parents run the falling newsstand, Tucker, a fast-talking Broadway mouse, and Tucker's sidekick, Harry the Cat. The escapades of these four friends in bustling New York City makes for lively listening and humorous entertainment. And somehow, they manage to bring a taste of success to the nearly bankrupt newsstand.Join Chester Cricket and his friends in this classic children's book by George Selden, with illustrations by Garth Williams. The Cricket in Times Square is a 1961 Newbery Honor Book.

More of kiddo‘s book bazaar picks. She got two Boxcar Children, tagged, Quidditch Through the Ages, a Karen Hesse called The Music of Dolphins…and some others we‘d never heard of. Plus three she thought would be good for school!

Clare-Dragonfly The Music of Dolphins is so good! A childhood favorite of mine. ❤️🐬 2y

I gave this a listen, I‘m pretty sure I read it as a kid but thought it sounded interesting since I‘m heading to NYC soon. It was sweet, I loved the animal characters and their friendship and the setting was fun too. Tony Shaloub‘s narration was lovely. The characterization of the humans made it a so-so, it was racially insensitive and kept mentioning Mama‘s weight. We get it, she is curvy! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

julieclair I had forgotten all about this book! I remember loving it as a kid. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I vaguely remember reading this book as a kid, but can't even remember if I liked it or not! I should put it on the reread list. I feel like there may be a sequel as well?? 2y

15-30 Jun 2022 (audiobook)
Trying to find some NY books for Beatrix in anticipation of Christmas holidays. This old-fashioned tale was ok, albeit predictable and a bit sentimental. I was pleased the cricket escaped.
Anyone have any NYC recommendations? We have read, and quite enjoyed, a couple of the Vanderbeekers books.

After a month of chatting about new YA on my podcast, we‘re back to old school reads, starting with George Selden‘s The Cricket in Times Square. This Newbery Honor winner is a love story to New York City, friendship, and the arts. Bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz was lovely enough to join me for this episode and to share her personal experience with this classic. 🎼 Link to listen in bio!

On a quick break at work featuring a Strawberry acai refresher and trader joes granola bar. 😋 It's been so much fun teaching The Cricket in Times Square to 4th graders. I'm surprised by how much they're loving this story. 🤗💕

It's so hard to take a picture of a Kindle book. 🤣

My first assignment for the reading institute is to read this book and write a report on it! I'm surprised that this isn't one that was read to me as a child. It's such a cute, feel good little book. ❤

BarbaraJean Oh, I loved this one when I was a kid! 6y

I thought this story of a Connecticut cricket finding a home in Times Square was okay. My kid, though, quite enjoyed it. I was disappointed by the ratio of male to female characters (only one woman out of at least ten characters). The writing and the story were fine, but it is not a book that will stick with me. #battleofthebooks

DivaDiane You know, that didn‘t even occur to me. I read this as a child and loved it and Harry Cat‘s Pet Puppy very much, that I was probably a bit blinded by the nostalgia. That said, there are some important female characters in Tucker‘s Countryside and Harry Cat‘s Pet Puppy. 6y
thebluestocking @DivaDiane For some reason, I‘m super sensitive to that lately. Especially where, in this book, it would have been easy to make the cat female or one of the Chinese characters female. But it‘s nice to know it maybe balances out in the other books. 6y
DivaDiane Oh, I don‘t know if it really does. And, while I‘m not trying to make excuses for them, I do tend to cut older books by men some slack when it comes to this issue. They didn‘t know any better. As long as it‘s not actually offensive, and there are other good messages, I‘m ok with it. Books written today get held accountable to a much higher degree. 6y

thebluestocking @DivaDiane I do get that and try to cut some slack too. If it‘s a good book; it‘s a good book. But it‘s hard when your daughter asks why there are little to no female characters in some stuff. 6y
DivaDiane That‘s a good point. My son never wonders that sort of thing. I should probably point that out, whenever possible. On the other hand, he doesn‘t mind at all if the main character is a girl. 6y
thebluestocking @DivaDiane I think the fact that our kids are reading will (hopefully) translate into greater empathy all around. ❤️ 6y
DivaDiane Yes! My hope exactly! 6y

An unlikely trio - Tucker the Mouse, Harry the Cat, and Chester the Cricket - become friends and orchestrate an amazing way to bring fame to Chester and an ordinary newsstand in Times Square. This Newberry winner is so refreshing as you see friendships made that help others see they have purpose. I read this as part of a Newberry challenge for this year but I‘d love to read the rest of the stories in the series.

3. No. They never stick.
4. Nothing on Netflix, but Dr. Who on Amazon and Handmaid‘s Tale on Hulu.
5. Of course! 👍

I love this bookmark my kiddo made as he reads through MY childhood copy of this book! His school district does a “Book Battles” competition and the fourth graders are super competitive this year! Kellen‘s goal is to read all 20 books on the Book Battle list! (This is Book 8 for him!)

We finished this book last night.😢I'd forgotten this book almost completely. There are so many lovely parts-that the Bellinis are Italian immigrants who love opera, that Chester was such a talented musician with an uncanny ability to learn a melody & reproduce it exactly. And that he ultimately chose to go home rather than continue to as a slave to his fame. His conviction and resolve are important, even though he had to leave his friends behind.

I read this as a child. 4th maybe 5th grade. I'm reading it to my son now and I remember nothing. I didn't remember that music played such a prominent role, at least in the 2nd half. But I'm loving it. I wonder if it swayed me in any way to become a musician? You'd think I'd remember it better if it had!🤔

I feel ya, Chester! My girls loved how the time of year in the book coincided perfectly with when we read it (the last Sunday in August was specifically mentioned). Lena (9) had a bit of a hard time getting into this bc she had a book hangover from The Penderwicks, but she ended up enjoying it. I found it a tad boring, to be honest. ⭐⭐⭐

#popsugar reading challenge to read "a book with a cat on the cover" done right!

Cat in lap? Check! Cat on cover? Check! Is there a bonus if the cat in my lap was adopted from the same used bookstore where I got this book? I adopted her from Twice Sold Tales when she was a tiny kitten... five years later she still loves to snuggle up with a good book! Love my bookish kitty

underthebelljar That's so sweet! She's a cute kitty 😻 8y
book-butterfly Thanks! She loves used books the way other cats love boxes and paper bags. I think it's because she was surrounded by them when she was a little bookstore kitten...I couldn't have a better cat. 8y
