A great book, I listened to the audiobook and I‘ve never heard a child narrate one before, was really interesting to hear 😊
Read for #PopSugarReadingChallenge2022 5/5
Just finished this book on the drive from Florida! It was a lovely audiobook and great listen on top of being a good story! It was a perfect road trip novel and I loved that different people did voices — it was MADE to be an audio book given its subject matter.
Alex sets out on a mission to put his golden iPod on a rocket, but what follows- love, bravery, and family- related and found- places him on a trajectory of discovery.
I loved this story! Funny, sad, brilliant- all the self discovery layers that I love in middle grade fiction.

I love every YA book I pick up and this was no exception. The protagonist is impossibly lovable. This book breaks and heals your heart, and then leaves you wanting more. Such a fun format to write in as well! Finished in 2 days
“No, I‘m pretty sure he was a civil engineer.” 😂 I‘m finding this book delightful but also very sad, all at the same time. A little anxious the ending is going to rip my heart out.
An utterly charming story of a boy trying to find his way in the world through trying circumstances whilst on a boys own adventure. Not that Alex realises that they are trying, he only seems to see the good. The story is told through a series of audio recordings. I did this as an audiobook and I think it enhanced the experience. A great read.
8.5/10 Good book, took a little while to get used to the format/style of the story. First person perspective made the book more interesting, lets you use your imagination to fill in the details. I'd read this again, would be really interesting as an audio book. Also, who doesn't like rockets??
This was actually a nice, light read✨ It touched some tough topics towards the end, but in a slight way.
The problem with middle grade novels is that they *always* make me cry! I fall in love with the characters and I jut want to take them home and make everything ok.
Anyways... this was awesome! I love that it was told through Alex‘s “recordings” and he was just such s fun character. Definitely going to be recommending this to everyone I know.
The coffee shop got too noisy, so I relocated to our family‘s cabin just outside of the village. My grandpa was there so he read the newspaper, I read my book and pretty Miss Sadie watched some birds. Very enjoyable afternoon!
My husband told me to “get out of the house and enjoy a few child-free hours.” No arguments here!
Holy hell this mc is freaking adorable!
I'm so excited to read this based on the cover homage alone!
The whole "don't buy more books than March" plan seems to have failed...
#MarchIntoOz Day 22: First thing that came to mind with the #UnderTheMilkyWay prompt. I have heard nothing but great reviews about this novel written by a Filipino American author. Anyone who has read this yet? #OwnVoices #DiverseLit

I'm curious about this one, can't decide if I want to add it to my list to read. Has anyone read it?
Such an amazing book for middle school readers! ❤️
Thoroughly charming novel about a precocious 11-year-old boy with a passion for astronomy and a dog named after his hero, Carl Sagan. I strongly recommend the #audiobook, which is expertly narrated by a wonderful cast; the audio format matches the story‘s narrative structure well, as it recreates the narrator‘s recordings and includes all sorts of sound effects. Big life lessons in a delightful and quirky package. Loved it!
This book! 😍
A great book about an 11 yr. old boy who tells his story in such a unique way. I love the character of Alex - he has more wisdom than most of the adults I know.
There are so many great take-aways from this book. Poignant observations about life.
A beautiful, wonderful story of family, friends, rockets, and love! This one is incredibly special and Alex‘s story is going to stay with me for a long time. 🚀
Went for a gift card, left with something for me. 🤷🏼♀️ AND THE GIFT CARD, DON‘T WORRY. I‘m not a monster. 😂 Had a really bad morning at work, but a trip to the bookstore for a really late lunch made it all better. This book is so pretty! 😍
This was a wonderful, imaginative story about an 11 year old boy obsessed with rockets and space. He travels with his dog to New Mexico for a rocket event and meets many amazing people on the way. This novel covers many big issues in a very sensitive way. Some of these issues include: abandonment, neglect, and mental health issues. This book was recommended to me by a young patron with very good taste.
This was beautiful and heartbreaking and funny, and oh so perfect.
Alex, the 11-year-old main character, loves space and plans in travel with his dog from Colorado to New Mexico to launch his iPod into space. The story is written in the format of Alex speaking to his iPod. I can see him as an annoying character but he did grow in me and everyone else in the story seems to like him. My issue with this book is how many social issues and problems the author threw into this book. Wow it's a lot! No elementary school.
Eleven year old Alex Petroski struggles with the big questions: where do I come from? Who's out there? And above all, how can I be brave?
Favorites were:
ONLY A KISS by Ines Bautista Yao
SEE YOU IN THE COSMOS by Jack Cheng
THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas
MY FAIRY GODMOTHER IS A DRAG QUEEN by David Clawson
This is by far the best audiobook we have listened to in a long time. I recommend listening to it as an audiobook the production is incredibly well done.
We just started listening to this one and we both are loving it!!
It's been awhile since a book's made me cry. This MG read was gorgeous and so full of heart. There's a dog 🐶 named Carl Sagan, rockets 🚀, a charming POC protagonist, and so much more that I can't say without spoilers. It was so good! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
"Sometimes the clouds inside my head get big and gray and swirly and then I hurricane through my eyes."
Alex is the most adorable 11-year-old ever. I'm in love with this book.
PSA: Both of these are available to Read Now on Netgalley! I loved The Historian, so expecting great things from The Shadow Land. The other one is YA & was highly recommended by my bf's publishing friend. We shall see how both turn out! #netgalley
Rocket enthusiast Alex and his dog (Carl Sagan) make their way improbably across the American Southwest to a launch event for amateur rocket builders, despite the fact that Alex is only 11 (“I‘m 13 in responsibility years.")
Told in a series of audio recordings on a golden iPod that Alex intends to send out into the universe, ostensibly addressed to "the aliens," this shaped up to be one of my favorite books of the last few years.
