See You in the Cosmos
See You in the Cosmos | Jack Cheng
A space-obsessed boy and his dog, Carl Sagan, takea journey toward family, love, hope, and awe in this funny and moving novel for fans of Counting by 7sand Walk Two Moons. 11-year-old Alex Petroski loves space and rockets, his mom, his brother, and his dog Carl Sagan named for his hero, the real-life astronomer. All he wants is to launch his golden iPod into space the way Carl Sagan (the man, not the dog) launched his Golden Record on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. From Colorado to New Mexico, Las Vegas to L.A., Alex records a journey on his iPod to show other lifeforms what life on earth, his earth, is like. But his destination keeps changing. And the funny, lost, remarkable people he meets along the way can only partially prepare him for the secrets he ll uncover from the truth about his long-dead dad to the fact that, for a kid with a troubled mom and a mostly not-around brother, he has way more family than he ever knew. For fans of Wonder and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Jack Cheng s debut is full of joy, optimism, determination, and unbelievable heart. To read the first page is to fall in love with Alex and his view of our big, beautiful, complicated world. To read the last is to know he and his story will stay with you a long, long time."

A great book, I listened to the audiobook and I‘ve never heard a child narrate one before, was really interesting to hear 😊

Just finished this book on the drive from Florida! It was a lovely audiobook and great listen on top of being a good story! It was a perfect road trip novel and I loved that different people did voices — it was MADE to be an audio book given its subject matter.

Alex sets out on a mission to put his golden iPod on a rocket, but what follows- love, bravery, and family- related and found- places him on a trajectory of discovery.

I loved this story! Funny, sad, brilliant- all the self discovery layers that I love in middle grade fiction.

I love every YA book I pick up and this was no exception. The protagonist is impossibly lovable. This book breaks and heals your heart, and then leaves you wanting more. Such a fun format to write in as well! Finished in 2 days

“No, I‘m pretty sure he was a civil engineer.” 😂 I‘m finding this book delightful but also very sad, all at the same time. A little anxious the ending is going to rip my heart out.

An utterly charming story of a boy trying to find his way in the world through trying circumstances whilst on a boys own adventure. Not that Alex realises that they are trying, he only seems to see the good. The story is told through a series of audio recordings. I did this as an audiobook and I think it enhanced the experience. A great read.

8.5/10 Good book, took a little while to get used to the format/style of the story. First person perspective made the book more interesting, lets you use your imagination to fill in the details. I'd read this again, would be really interesting as an audio book. Also, who doesn't like rockets??

The problem with middle grade novels is that they *always* make me cry! I fall in love with the characters and I jut want to take them home and make everything ok.

Anyways... this was awesome! I love that it was told through Alex‘s “recordings” and he was just such s fun character. Definitely going to be recommending this to everyone I know.

The coffee shop got too noisy, so I relocated to our family‘s cabin just outside of the village. My grandpa was there so he read the newspaper, I read my book and pretty Miss Sadie watched some birds. Very enjoyable afternoon!

Centique That looks so lovely! 6y
Johanna414 @Centique my favorite spot in the world! I should have taken a picture of the whole cabin with the view of the hills behind it. Next time! (edited) 6y

Such an amazing book for middle school readers! ❤️

Thoroughly charming novel about a precocious 11-year-old boy with a passion for astronomy and a dog named after his hero, Carl Sagan. I strongly recommend the #audiobook, which is expertly narrated by a wonderful cast; the audio format matches the story‘s narrative structure well, as it recreates the narrator‘s recordings and includes all sorts of sound effects. Big life lessons in a delightful and quirky package. Loved it!

ofbooksandme I stopped listening to audiobooks but lately I've found myself wanting to go back. And this one sounds appealing. Maybe I'll try it! 7y

A great book about an 11 yr. old boy who tells his story in such a unique way. I love the character of Alex - he has more wisdom than most of the adults I know.
There are so many great take-aways from this book. Poignant observations about life.

This was a wonderful, imaginative story about an 11 year old boy obsessed with rockets and space. He travels with his dog to New Mexico for a rocket event and meets many amazing people on the way. This novel covers many big issues in a very sensitive way. Some of these issues include: abandonment, neglect, and mental health issues. This book was recommended to me by a young patron with very good taste.

peaKnit Young patron, music to my ears, I love a reader, and young ones means more on the way! I will check out this book, great recommendation. 7y

Alex, the 11-year-old main character, loves space and plans in travel with his dog from Colorado to New Mexico to launch his iPod into space. The story is written in the format of Alex speaking to his iPod. I can see him as an annoying character but he did grow in me and everyone else in the story seems to like him. My issue with this book is how many social issues and problems the author threw into this book. Wow it's a lot! No elementary school.

Rocket enthusiast Alex and his dog (Carl Sagan) make their way improbably across the American Southwest to a launch event for amateur rocket builders, despite the fact that Alex is only 11 (“I‘m 13 in responsibility years.")

Told in a series of audio recordings on a golden iPod that Alex intends to send out into the universe, ostensibly addressed to "the aliens," this shaped up to be one of my favorite books of the last few years.

Clare-Dragonfly Amazon has agreements with the publisher such that they can discount the hardcover (it comes out of Amazon's profit) but not the ebook. 8y
