Another favorite!
“Nicki looked at the mitten and thought, 'How did it get so stretched out?'“
In the classroom, The Mitten can be used to teach sequencing, cause-and-effect relationships, and prediction skills. Its repetitive structure makes it perfect for reading aloud, building comprehension, and engaging students in discussions about storytelling and problem-solving.
This book was published in 1989, and it is a traditional literature children's book. This book tells the story of a young boy named Nicki who loses a white mitten in the snow. As various woodland animals seek refuge inside the mitten, the mitten accommodates them all somehow along the way. It was recognized by the IRA-CBC Children's Choices for its award-winning folktale retelling.
I‘ve adored this book ever since our teacher read it to us in school. We had cutouts of a mitten and all the animals to play with. It‘s originally an old Ukrainian folk tale. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. I bought a copy for The Wyrmling for Christmas this year. ❤️

We somehow got a few copies the christmas of the mitten. Thought we would share with our local little free library. This one only has adult romance, westerns or religion romance. Lol the kids need a little something too.
I love the illustrations in this book. The way they depict winter and the different animals is so chilly and cozy at the same time.
A little boy has his grandmother make him white mittens. She warned her grandson that he may loose them in the snow. He goes out to play and drops the mitten in the snow. Different animals come along and find comfort and warmth in the mitten.
Jan brett‘s illustrations are mind blowing, take her hours just to complete one corner
this book is rooted in a Norwegian folktale that is just beautiful to view. It tells a sweet story of some animals and a mitten and makes you crave fresh snow and a cup of hot coco
“So off Nicki went, and it wasn't long before one of his new mittens had dropped in the snow and was left behind“
Just a classic book. I remember my first-grade teacher reading it to us a lot. I think this would be good to kick off the cold season
Nicki loses his mitten in the snow without even realizing it. He continues on his way. One by one, creatures crawl in and use his mitten as a home. They get some big animals in there!

#FestivePhotoChallenge Day 30: Winter Gear Up. All dressed up for a wintry walk in the woods. Note to self: Maybe don‘t listen to true crime when you‘re alone in the woods. Rookie mistake. 😂😂😂 #wintergames2021 #mistletoemaniacs #selfiescavengerhunt #dressedfortheoccasion
Retelling of a Norwegian folktale with very detailed illustrations. I felt cold just reading this. #WinterGames2021 TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious Word Search 4 + 66 pts

My littlest best friend turns 3 soon and loves books. Here are the awesome books I got at a thrift store for a $1 for her.
My librarian got me hooked on Brett when I was a kid and I look forward to sharing it with my littlest friend. I also got her some holiday themed books because she always seems to like those and she loves sharing her books with her baby brother.
This TL picture book by Jan Brett would be good for a RA. The book is about Nicki who drops his mitten while in snow. Animals slowly start to get into the mitten with each animal getting bigger than the one before. I think kids would love the illustrations of this book and it would keep them engaged during a RA.
This book brings back memories to elementary school. The Mitten by Jan Brett is a TL book and would be great to use in the classroom as an SR or S! I love the idea of using this book as an S in the wintertime, the kids would have a blast! The picture book tells the story of Nikki accidentally dropping his white mitten into the snow. One by one the animals begin to climb into it… can you guess what animals? Read to see for yourself! #ucflae3414su20
This is a beautiful PB that would be great for a class RT. This book is about Nicki, who drops his white mitten in the snow, without realizing that it is missing. One by one, animals find the mitten and crawl in. Then, when the largest animal, the bear is tickled by someone‘s whiskers, he sneezes everyone out, flying the glove into the air for Nicki to catch!
UDL design 3.2 (Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships)
This TL was written and illustrated by Jan Brett. This book is about, of course, a mitten. Nicky‘s Baba makes him a mitten. He drops it outside, where several animals squeeze into the warm mitten. When a mouse‘s whiskers make a bear sneeze the animals fly out everywhere. Nicky catches his mitten and makes his Baba curious about the size it became. #UCFLAE3414F19
The Mitten by Jan Brett is a TL picture book about Nicki who drops his white mitten in the snow without realizing it. Throughout the story, animals begin to pile into the mitten each one larger then the next, this book has beautiful illustrations and would be a great RA or ST during the month of December when it‘s cold out. UDL 7.3 would be utilized during the RA and EL strategy 6 would be used to monitor students comprehension...
The Mitten by Jan Brett was an adorable story for little kids. I love how unrealistic it is because it had so many different types of animals in this one little mitten. I also loved how at the end of the story the mitten found its way back to the boy. It shows how such a little thing can mean so much to all different types of living things. I love this book and will definitely be reading this in my future classroom.
This was one of my favourite books as a child, and I truly enjoyed rereading it this afternoon. The illustrations are even prettier than I remembered. #BBRC #A2Z #picturebooks @LibrarianRyan
A great book to read to your class to make observations on. A girl loses her kitten while making a snowman, but after awhile she can‘t seem to find it. She spends the whole book retracing her steps to try and find it, all the while you can spot the mitten in every page.
I discovered in a recent childhood book search that one of my Jan Brett books is signed! Lil me knew what was up!
Author and illustrator Jan Brett's love of folk and fairy tales is apparent in this beautifully illustrated picture book for little readers. Having carefully researched this Ukrainian tale, she renders each picture with true authenticity. This TL picture book will evoke warm and cozy feelings in readers any time of the year. Perfect to share with little ones, the simplicity of the story shines bright. This is used well as a SR.
I‘d rate the story 3 stars (ok), but the illustrations (as usual in her books) are gorgeous. There is a main picture on each page, with beautiful borders on either side. She does a very nice job of making it look Ukrainian (the first page describes some of the research she did for the book), and the borders add a bit of a preview as to what might be coming on the next page. So, 3 stars for the story and 4 stars for the illustrations.
This TL from the Ukraine is retold and illustrated by Jan Brett. This story begins with a young boy Nicki who drops one of his mittens that were knitted by his grandmother in the snow. The mitten then becomes home to many animals on this cold winter day before Nicki eventually finds it. I would use this as a SR in the classroom.

This book is a Ukrainian folklore traditional literature being retold and illustrated by Jan Brett with amazing borders this book could be used for a dramatic reenactment. This story is really cute it talks about how a grandmother, Baba, knits mittens for her grandson. When he loses a mitten, many animals decide to use the mitten to stay warm. The borders are great because they give a little bit of foreshadowing of what is to come.
The Mitten by Jan Brett, a traditional literature (TL) picture book. This was a cute story about a little boy name Nicki who asked his grandmother baba, to make him a pair of snow-white mittens. As Nicki was enjoying his time in the snow, he lost a Mitten along the way. The lost Mitten become the home of several lonely cold animals. TA strategy RA will work well with this book. https://youtu.be/d3rRWzdHv5M
I love Jan Brett and am so excited to teach this book today!!! 🤓
The Mitten is a TL PB (Ukrainian Folktale adapted and illustrated by Jan Brett) best read as a RA or S. This is a beautifully illustrated story of Nicki who wants his grandma to knit him white mittens. She warns that he may lose them in the snow, but he persists. As he plays, he loses one. Several animals come across the mitten and wiggle their way in to stay warm. When Nicki finally finds it, it was not the same size that Baba originally made.

The Mitten, written and illustrated by Jan Brett is an exceptional TL book. This is a book who's illustrations can really help children predict what is going to happen next. It would be perfect in the classroom and make an excellent PR activity.

Always been a fan of Jan Brett's books and illustrations. A few years back I went to Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, NY and I got to hear Walter Wick do a lecture on his Can You See/ I Spy books. I of course had to buy a book and had him sign it.
