Anna Karenina
Anna Karenina | Lev Tolstoj
Orhan Pamuk

The first book I‘m tackling this year for the #AllergicToChunksters challenge is Anna Karenina. I‘m reading it for the #KareninaWinter buddy read, hosted by @TheBookHippie and @Librarybelle . I started it in December, and am woefully behind, but loving it.

What will everyone else be starting on? Tagging those who expressed interest, but all are welcome! 😃

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I decided to try and tackle The Last Magician again 🙇‍♀️ I‘m challenging myself to at least a chapter a day (they‘re about 5 pages each). The characters have started growing on me and so far I‘m up to page 173 🎩 21h
mcctrish I read AK with a book club a long time ago and I only finished it because I got so sick I couldn‘t get out of bed 🤣🤣🤣 BUT I am glad I did. It turned out to be a book I had to finish to appreciate. It will be so good as a buddy read ❤️❤️❤️but once was enough 😉 21h
PuddleJumper It's going to be The Lost Hero or Scum Villain Self blah blah blah which are both over 500 pages I think 21h
See All 54 Comments
mcctrish Also I am undecided about my first chunkster, I‘m down an Elin Hilderbrand rabbit hole, soon finished, and then I will sort myself out 21h
JenlovesJT47 I started Les Misérables today ? 21h
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 Same! 🤩🥳🤗 21h
Librarybelle I‘m glad you‘re tackling Anna Karenina! @TheBookHippie is doing an amazing job hosting this one—I just told her I‘d read with her, and a #BuddyRead was born!! 😂 21h
JenlovesJT47 @dabbe yay! 🙌🏻 I admit I freaked out at first when my ereader said the first chapter had 105 pages 😆 but luckily they are broken up into smaller chunks within the chapter. 21h
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 I'm only reading like 3-5 pages a day and ignoring the chapters ... otherwise my brain will implode. 🤩🥳🤗 21h
julieclair @Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I love your plan! 5 pages a day is so doable! 20h
TheBookHippie @dabbe you have a schedule yes? ♥️😘💙 20h
julieclair @mcctrish That‘s quite a story! I hope I can finish it without resorting to your drastic measures! 😂 But that‘s an interesting comment about needing to finish to appreciate it. That‘s motivating. 👍 20h
julieclair @PuddleJumper No matter which one you choose, the other will be waiting in the wings! 😂 20h
julieclair @mcctrish No need to rush out of your rabbit hole. You can start in February… or March… 20h
julieclair @JenlovesJT47 and @dabbe Good for you for taking on Les Mis! I was tempted, but realized there was absolutely no way I could read it while also reading Anna Karenina. 🤯 20h
julieclair @Librarybelle Hope you didn‘t freak out when I mentioned you were cohosting AK! 😂 For some reason, I thought @TheBookHippie was hosting December, and you were hosting January. But I agree, she is doing a fabulous job (as always). 💙🩵💙 20h
JenlovesJT47 I meant to start AK last month but had too much going on. I‘m a month behind so I dunno about jumping in now, but I really want to read this. 20h
Librarybelle No worries, @julieclair ! 20h
Gissy I‘m not so afraid of chunksters because last year I read around 8 books with more than 500 pages but always is a commitment😳I will like to read Anna Karelian but I need first to order online my copy. Let‘s see if I can finish it. I am also very interested to read The Miserables and finish The Count of Monte Christo. I will read some books this month that have more than 400 pages but less than 500 pages which are still long books for me😳🥺 20h
Gissy I never know if a big book will be a torture or an adventure, all depends on its context. I finished one that I really suffered with it😖 20h
julieclair @JenlovesJT47 If you really want to read it, maybe you could put AK next in line for whenever you finish Les Mis. 20h
JenlovesJT47 I could but we‘re supposed to read one chapter a day of Les Mis for the whole year 😆 I might just start it in a few days after I clear out some other books on my currently reading shelf. I get stressed when I have too many going at once 😳 20h
JenlovesJT47 @Gissy I know what you mean. I routinely do a Harry Potter reread every year or two & I speed through those big books so fast! I‘m currently on the 4th Outlander book which has 1800 pages on my ereader (so like 900 pages in the physical copy of the book) & have been reading slowly since October. 🥵 20h
julieclair @Gissy Hooray for finishing 8 chunksters last year!! 🏆 My goal for this year is to read 3. 😎 I‘d like to read The Count of Monte Christo at some point, too. 20h
julieclair @JenlovesJT47 I forgot Les MIs was for the whole year! 🤪😂😂 20h
Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes Good challenge! I hope to join in once I get back to Ohio, where the majority of my books are. I have plenty to choose from! 🤣😬📚📚 (edited) 20h
MatchlessMarie I plan on starting with Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky. Two of my hopefuls for the year are from previously failed buddy reads (completely on my part 😂) I attempted Les Mis CAD in 2023 and a Count of Monte Cristo Buddy Read from circa 2018 or so 🫣 I would also like to get to House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. 19h
Andrew65 Last year I read 20 books over 500 pages, although a lot of these were in the first half of the year. Not sure which one I‘m starting with but these are the ones I‘m hoping to get to initially.

1. Natchez Burning - Greg Iles, 969 Pages
2. A Discovery of Witches - Deborah Harkness, 704 Pages
3. The Scarlet Lion- Elizabeth Chadwick, 608 Pages
4. Knights of the Black and White - Jack Whyte, 576 Pages
5. Act of Oblivion - Robert Harris, 596 Pages
19h
willaful One of my roll 100 books is Book of Love (650pg) so I might go with that, but I have been reading an awful lot of fantasy lately so may instead go with Table for Two. It's not quite 500 pages but I'm counting any book that I find intimidating. :-) 18h
Andrew65 I‘ve succumbed and am starting the year long read of Les Miserables. 18h
TheBookgeekFrau I hope this is easier to follow than War and Peace was!! 🤞🏼🤞🏼 17h
dabbe @TheBookHippie I don't have one written out, but my book works out to about 4 pages per day. I just finished reading them! I'm going to put a post-it-note where I stop and every day count 4 pages. Do you think that'll work? 🤩😘💪🏻 13h
julieclair @Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes Glad you‘re joining us! Anytime you‘re ready to start is fine. This is a very low key challenge. 😀 13h
julieclair @MatchlessMarie I‘m a Count of Monte Cristo buddy read dropout, too! 😂 13h
dabbe I hope to read three, or should I say I PLAN to read 3! 😂 One: LES MIS. Two: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell (never read it!). Three: TOMBLAND (Shardlake reread). Am I too crazy? 😬 13h
dabbe @Andrew65 YAY! 🤩🤩🤩 13h
julieclair @Andrew65 That‘s a great list! 👍 And I‘m proud of you for joining the Les Mis buddy read. I‘m still a bit too allergic to tackle that one. 😂😂 13h
dabbe @TheBookgeekFrau Me, too! Those Russian names! (and now the French ones!). Maybe I should create a sheet with American names, so instead of Monseigneur Myriel, I could call him Fred. 😂 13h
julieclair @TheBookgeekFrau If you tackled War and Peace, you can handle anything! 😘 13h
julieclair @willaful If you find it intimidating, it totally counts! 😎 13h
julieclair @dabbe You are not crazy. You have a PLAN! 😎😘 13h
julieclair @dabbe Isn‘t that what we did for Udolpho? 😂👍 Fred sounds good to me. 13h
dabbe @julieclair But sometimes “the best laid plans of mice and men“ ... 😂 12h
dabbe @julieclair But sometimes “the best laid plans of mice and men“ ... 😂 12h
TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair Lol you give me wayyyy too much credit--I read it for a class in high school and then again in college for Russian Lit. On my own I would've been so confused, it would've been a very quick DNF! 12h
TheBookgeekFrau @dabbe 😂😂 And all the damn nicknames they had for each other, too 🤦🏻‍♀️ 12h
julieclair @TheBookgeekFrau You get double credit if you read it twice! Regardless of the reason. 😘 12h
julieclair @dabbe Your PLAN is better than any made by mice… or men… 😉😂 12h
Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes @MatchlessMarie House of Leaves came to my mind as well! 🙂 11h
TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair 😂 Thank you! 11h
Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes I read AK in grad school. I ended up having to make a list of characters with arrows to show relationships. 🤪 11h

After initially feeling totally unable to distinguish between some of the male characters, I am far enough along to feel as if the characters are within my grasp. Only in pg. 91. I have a free period at work(prep) & I have been rewarding myself with reading this text then while my brain is still working! I am beginning to enjoy this novel. #KareninaWinter

julieclair I haven‘t started yet. 😭 But I have always wanted to read this and I need to get on it!! 3w
MemoirsForMe Could it be that it‘s hard to differentiate the male characters because they‘re all acting like a bunch of self-centered imbeciles?! 😂 Except Levin of course. Seriously, I‘ve been stumbling over some of the story too, but I feel I‘m understanding more now as I‘m starting Part 3. 3w
MemoirsForMe @PurpleyPumpkin I‘m predominantly listening to the audiobook too, but I toggle back and forth with the hardcover. I‘m even getting some exercise each time I lift it! 😉 3w
Tkimsal This novel is worth the time and effort. I loved it. 3w

A sweeping panoramic view of late 19th-century Russia and the strict confines of noble women. I was surprised to see that Levin was more like Anna than any other character, and the novel was really about both of them, not just Anna. Though a tragic character, Anna was unlikable at times, but perhaps she wouldn't have been if she had lived in the modern era. 4.5/5

A classic on my TBR … this one has deckled edges and French flaps. Thank you Prime Day.

dabbe Way better than WAR IN PEACE (IMHO). I have the same book, too! 💜💜💜 5mo
Twainy @dabbe IKR! It‘s pretty! I think I saw Lezlie on The Nerdy Narrative review it. Maybe? It‘s been on my Amazon list for awhile & I saw it was on sale during Prime Days so 💰 sigh I also have W&P Penguin Clothbound classic edition … I just can‘t force myself to pick it up. 😁 5mo
dabbe @Twainy I hear ya! I just read 1-2 chapters a day until I really got into it. Baby steps worked for me. I did the same with WAR AND PEACE (I wrote “IN“ above ... sheesh!), but I never got into it; I just nickled and dimed it until I was done. 😂 5mo

I can‘t believe I‘m actually saying this, but as far as I‘m concerned, Anna Karenina is just… fine? It wasn‘t the dreadful slog I was worried it might be, but it wasn‘t brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same either. If you‘re thinking about reading it, go ahead – there‘s no reason to be afraid. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/anna-karenina-leo-tolstoy-review/

Ruthiella I read it a long time ago but I DREADED the parts with Levin and his interminable thoughts. 😂 2y
Lindy @Ruthiella I was the opposite! I enjoyed Levin‘s pontifications but got really impatient with Anna and her shenanigans. Is it offensive to say I was pleased with the outcome for Anna? 😬 2y
AvidReader25 @Lindy I‘m with you Lindy. I loved watching Levin‘s transformation and got tired of Anna. 2y

BarbaraBB And I am with you @Ruthiella although I loved the book as a whole. I read it in my teens and was so proud of myself that I did! 2y
IuliaC We should bear in mind it was published in 1878. It makes sense we don't resonate anymore neither with the plot, nor with the characters or the writing style... 2y
CarolynM I‘m #TeamLevin too @batsy @AvidReader25 @Lindy but like @BarbaraBB I was a teenager when I read it so I was completely on board with the grand passion and very much moved by Anna‘s fate. 2y
BarbaraBB Exactly @CarolynM ! The drama! 2y
batsy @CarolynM I read it as an adult and absolutely loved it. The epic grandeur, the language... Just got a teeny bit annoyed with Anna as @Lindy 😍said but even that basically added to the experience 😁 2y
CatMS Recently bought a used copy from my library bookstore, as thought it was time to read it. A friend read it recently and like it. Also said it wasn't difficult. 2y

I just don‘t know about this y‘all. I am on part 2 and somehow still have 23 hours left. In confusion I thought to check the chapter list because how many parts can a novel have and it has EIGHT PARTS people! And I mean, the story is charming? And the characters lively and entertaining? Still…. Eight parts, man…. That‘s a lot of parts.
