Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales
Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales | Jon Scieszka
45 posts | 106 read | 10 to read
The entire book, with its unconventional page arrangement and eclectic, frenetic mix of text and pictures, is a spoof on the art of book design and the art of the fairy tale. The individual tales, such as The Really Ugly Duckling and Little Red Running Shorts, can be extracted for telling aloud, with great success. Another masterpiece from the team that created The True Story of the Three Little Pigs! "-Horn Book"

1. Too many to choose from, but random brain flash has me typing about “post-modern“ fairy tales like the Stinky Cheese Man and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.

2. Elton John concert when I was 10. My mom was very appropriate around us, so I got a kick watching her sing along to “The Bitch Is Back“ like being able to curse was a treat she was going to take full advantage of 😅

3. Might have been seeing Amos Lee with the Vail Orchestra

WildAlaskaBibliophile Ahh, yes! And the Boyz II Men concert with the Colorado Symphony as well! 1y

Published in 1992, this book won the Caldecott Medal. This is a collection of classic fairytales, retold in a humorous way. It puts a spin on the stories we all know and love. Kids would love this book as it holds lots of humor. This would be a great book when talking about adaptations of fairytales, and when students are writing their own versions.

This TL book is a great way to introduce (or reintroduce) traditional fairy tales to students. It puts a humorous twist on stories such as The Ugly Duckling and Little Red Riding Hood. This is a great book to use as a RA over several days, since there are several stories within. https://www.crayola.com/lesson-plans/stinky-cheese-man-lesson-plan/ is a great resource to review, because it allows students to use their creativity...

OliviaBuck ...to draw the plot of each story. EL 14- simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant aligns with this book because it is easy to adjust your voice and tone to fit each story. UDL 3.1- activate or supply background knowledge applies because students may already be aware of the TL these stories come from. #ucflae3414sp21 4y

Blast from the past! This Folktale, PB is a hilarious spin on traditional literature like the Gingerbread Man. This book is a Caldecott Honor from 1993 and would make a great RA for the older students. It would be fun to compare and contrast the different stories with the originals. ReadThinkWrite.org offers a lesson plan where student can create there own “fractured” fairy tale. UDL principle would be 3.2, highlight patterns, relationships etc.

Tabitha_H #UCFLAE3414SP20 The ESOL strategy I would use would be #50, For content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, ex: KWL, learning logs, role playing etc. 5y
marleed I read this book aloud so often through the 90s! 5y
Brennap Yes I remember this book from when I was young. Definitely would be good to discuss folktales and stories 5y
DrSpalding This is an excellent book! Older students can be exposed to these variants and can connect to the original versions they may have heard in the primary grades. 5y

Stumbled upon one of my all-time favorite books on a bookstore run today ... maybe this is where I started to gravitate towards fairy tale retellings?

As an added bonus, the graphic designer in me LOVES the page design and typography in this - so much fun to flip through and see how far they took the tiniest details!😍

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I definitely remember this from when I was a kid. Great score! 5y

Do you think you know the classic fairy tales? Think again. I love this F book by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith. It takes a bunch of classic fairy tales and turns them into brand new stories that children will love. It is a hilarious book that everyone will enjoy. #ucflae3414f19
This book won the Caldecott Honor for its fantastic illustrations by Lane Smith

Jgolub13 My UDL principle is Offer alternatives for visual information (1.3). My ESOL strategy will be Focus on thinking skills; predict, categorize, classify, observe and report (oral-written-pictorial), sequence, summarize 5y
Jgolub13 The lesson plan I found involves many levels, and it helps students who are on different reading levels. It involves making story boards for each re imagined story. The most challenging compare the original to the new story. https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=6433&lf_id=9 5y
DrSpalding This traditional literature variant is so fun and certainly not meant for younger students. Use this in your intermediate grades and compare and contrast the original with these hilarious versions. 5y

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid tales is a Caldecott honor book. I really like this book because it is a bunch of stories retold into funnier versions for kids. I like that it takes the classic tales that kids mostly know already and gives them a new and funnier version of the classically loved tale. I think this is a good book that would make even the most stubborn student laugh.

I think this book would be great for kids interested in fictional characters who appear more realistic. The book would be best read aloud, when the teacher or book reader can provide a better experience with emphasis and enthusiasm. I think this is a book kids would enjoy and can easily be turned into a Segway into a lesson about folk tales and how they can change over time.

The Stinky Cheese man is a TL folktale Caldecott Medal book that takes a fun and quirky take on classic fairytale stories. This would best be utilized as a RA to students, followed by this activity http://readwritethink.org/parent-afterschool-resources/games-tools/fractured-fai... Students will use this interactive tool to change the essential elements of fairy tale stories while also understanding setting, plot, and POV. Using
