Wonder | R. J. Palacio

Pickpick

Wonder is a RF novel that I truly believe every single person can benefit from reading. This book addresses bullying, self-insecurity and the importance of true friendship, and the characters are at an age (6th grade) where children often are least aware of how to deal with these things. I love the national Certified Kind Classroom Challenge you can sign your class up for: choosekind.tumblr.com/certified-kind-classroom-challenge #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding You know I love this. Well said with a great resource! 8y
KaylaC I have heard SO many great things about this book! And the fact that it is going to be a movie, must mean that it is a worth while read! I would have never know about this book if it weren't for this class, thank you! 8y
NicoleMaltby This is one of the books that I wanted to read as a lit circle book but chose pax instead! I definitely need to pick this book up and read it =)! 8y

This realistic fiction novel has me so confused! Melvin is a grandpa who has come back to life, in the form of a 13 year old boy! He made a scientific discovery to reverse aging... but I don't get the goldfish part! Here's a great article that could be used to create a classroom debate about whether or not we should age https://www.google.com/amp/io9.gizmodo.com/the-fourteenth-goldfish-is-a-children... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding I enjoy her work. My favorite is Turtle in Paradise. I have not read this however your summary makes me think that it is not realistic fiction. What other genre could it be? 8y
NicoleMaltby I actually think this book is realistic fiction as well. Although it is weird he reverted age so it might not be realistic in that aspect but it is talking about the jellyfish gene where they can live forever, and talks about many scientists and what they have done/accomplished in the book! 8y
NicoleMaltby (Sent my comment a little to early, but I also read the book and it is a little disappointing in my opinion.) 8y

How Honu the turtle got his shell | Casey A. McGuire-Turcotte
post image
Mehso-so

This TL picture book lets students read about the Hawaiian folklore behind how turtles get their shells. The images are vivid and engaging, and the story is a fun way to introduce the topic of folktales, fables and myths. Scholastic has dozens of resources for teaching this genre that this book could compliment quite well: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/myths-folktale... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding What a resource! Neat book selection! 8y
KaylaC I love Hawaii!! This would be a very good book to have in my class, it has a different kind of culture that I would be able to expose to my students. And it is about a sea turtle so who wouldn't love to read this cute book? Thank you for sharing it! 8y

The Invisible Boy | Trudy Ludwig

"Brian looks at the floor, wishing he could draw a hole right there to swallow him up." This science fiction picture book is a great resource for discussing inclusion, kindness and the importance of a positive classroom community. I love the idea of creating a "random acts of kindness" school-wide campaign after reading this book: https://www.randomhouse.com/teachers/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/TheInvisibleBoy_... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding I think this book is realistic fiction. Looking at the resource, confirms this for me. The last page of the resource shows a large number of books regarding the important topic of bullying. Everyone should check this out! 8y
ericai i love the random acts of kindness campaign you mentioned. it's so important to teach our students the importance of being kind. i definitely want to read this book! 8y
DrSpalding Excellent to hear @ericai #choosekind 8y

Alisoncavicchi @DrSpalding I had thought science fiction because of the inclusion of the supernatural concept of invisibility ? Or would it still be realistic despite this feature? 8y
AmberC What a great book and discussion starter for students. I also like that the resource includes more book suggestions on the topic for interested or older children. 8y
KaylaC This seems like a very good book to show to my future students, you need to teach them when they are little about the importance of kindness and making sure everyone feels included and welcomed. 8y

This 2013 Irma Black award winner tells the story of Henry "Box" Brown and his brave journey to escape slavery. The biographical picture book addresses the topic of slavery in a way that is appropriate for younger readers. This would be a great read-aloud for a social studies lesson, and can be integrated in with this Underground Railroad expedition: http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/bhistory/underground_railroad/index.htm #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding The scholastic resource is excellent. I like that you are thinking about integrating literature and social studies content. Well done! 8y

The Missing Piece | Shel Silverstein

"Hi-dee-go, here I go lookin' for my missin' piece" Shel Silverstein's poetry book, The Missing Piece takes readers on an adventure with an imaginary creature who is looking for his missing wedge. Shel's website has an animation of the book, so students can feel like the wedge is really moving on their adventure with them. He also has awesome event kits for poetry month! http://www.shelsilverstein.com/books/missing-piece/ #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding You shared these in your author study presentation. I love that you had both the English and Spanish version. Using the author's website as your source is a smart thing to do. Well done Alison! 8y
ericai shel silverstein has always been my favorite author! i've never read these books before so i'm happy you had these during your presentation and posted about them on here! 8y

This TL by Ronald Dahl teaches the power of teamwork through the Ladderless Window Cleaning Company- a giraffe, pelican, and monkey! Dahl uses vivid vocabulary such as dotty, gumption and galloped, and adds in small songs and illustrations to bring the book to life. Here's a teamwork lesson, & there's a virtual tour of his museum! www.roalddahl.com/create-and-learn/teach/teach-the-stories/the-giraffe-and-the-pelly-and-me-lessons #UCFLAE3414sp17

CaitlinPVeal This book sounds like a great book! It is important in a new class to establish a sense of togetherness or team work. On the website I liked that there were quizzes the kids could take. This is a great tool if you need a fun lesson extension for reading comprehension! 8y
DrSpalding Did you win this one from me? If so, yeah for reading it so quickly. His website is fantastic! 8y

Written and illustrated by Lita Judge, this nonfiction picture book teaches students about 8 different dinosaurs. I felt this book was a bit content heavy, and would only be appropriate for more advanced readers (grades 3+) or it could be used as a read-aloud. The pictures are vivid and there's a glossary that summarizes key terms at the end. Games & videos would be useful resources to add on discoverykids.com/category/dinosaurs/ #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding There are our science standards related to dinosaurs in second grade. Remember that text heavy books like this do not have to be read cover to cover. You could post it certain sections to use to expose your students and then allow them to consult the book as needed later. 8y

This fantasy picture book illustrated by Oliver Jeffers presents a hilarious display of the issues 12 different colored crayons may have. The book is youthful and an easy read for beginning readers, and teaches color recognition, respect and problem solving in a unique way. Students also learn how to write letters! Check out the sequel and a lesson guide for both here: www.crayonspicturebooks.com/day-crayons-quit-activities/ #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding One of my interns recently read this to her first grade class as an example of personal narrative writing and they thoroughly enjoyed it. The pictures helped them to add pictures and drawings to their own books that were much more colorful. 8y

This realistic fiction picture book won School Library Journal's Best book of the year, and for good reason. This little mouse can teach children about acceptance, kindness and confidence, while also addressing topics such as bullying and the importance of family. Scholastic provides a great "change your name" activity for students to further understand kindness & acceptance http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=32395 #UCFLAE3414sp17

NicoleMaltby I really liked this book! You're certainly correct that this book can teach and be helpful to kids who are uncomfortable the first day. I also liked your link and think that is a great way to implement an activity in your classroom while reading this =) 8y
DrSpalding It's Fantasy due to the fact that mice are talking and wearing clothing. However, if you did not look at the pictures, the story is very realistic and one that children can relate to. 8y

The City of Ember | Jeanne DuPrau

Pickpick

The City of Ember is a science fiction novel that will respark anyone's love for reading! An ALA NOtable Book winner, this novel kept me on my toes the whole time, and I truly felt like I was part of Luna and Doon's adventure. Now a major motion picture, this book would be a great addition to a 4-5th grade class, and can easily be tied to a variety of subjects. https://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/teachers_guides/9780375855719.pdf #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Great choice for SF! This book is the first in a quartet; People of Sparks, Prophet of Yonwood and The Diamond of Darkhold are the other titles. Yonwood is a prequel. 📚 8y
DrSpalding The Random House guide is excellent and provides ideas for all of the books in the series. 8y

Echo | Pam Munoz Ryan
post image

Echo, a historical fiction novel by Pam Muñoz Ryan, tugs on your heart strings in more ways than one. This final quote was the most powerful for me; as I read it seemed all the characters faced terrible endings. But in the end, everything worked out how it was meant to for each of the children. I found a teacher blog that shows how this book was used across subjects in her class http://www.booksourcebanter.com/2016/02/29/14062/ #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding While it is approximately 600 pages, this book is a relatively quick read. The stories become interwoven; truly masterful writing. The BookSource resource is excellent! 8y
