Pastrix
Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint | Nadia Bolz-Weber
Now a New York Times bestseller, Nadia Bolz-Weber takes no prisoners as she reclaims the term "pastrix"(pronounced "pas-triks," a term used by some Christians who refuse to recognize female pastors) in her messy, beautiful, prayer-and-profanity laden narrative about an unconventional life of faith. Heavily tattooed and loud-mouthed, Nadia, a former stand-up comic, sure as hell didn't consider herself to be religious leader material-until the day she ended up leading a friend's funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club. Surrounded by fellow alcoholics, depressives, and cynics, she realized: These were her people. Maybe she was meant to be their pastor. Using life stories-from living in a hopeful-but-haggard commune of slackers to surviving the wobbly chairs and war stories of a group for recovering alcoholics, from her unusual but undeniable spiritual calling to pastoring a notorious con artist-Nadia uses stunning narrative and poignant honesty to portray a woman who is both deeply faithful and deeply flawed, giving hope to the rest of us along the way. Wildly entertaining and deeply resonant, this is the book for people who hunger for a bit of hope that doesn't come from vapid consumerism or navel-gazing; for women who talk too loud, and guys who love chick flicks; for the gay man who loves Jesus, and won't allow himself to be shunned by the church. In short, this book is for every thinking misfit suspicious of institutionalized religion, but who is still seeking transcendence and mystery.

I learned a great deal from this first book by Nadia Bolz-Weber. I learned a great deal from her second book when I read it a couple of years ago. I guess as long as I learn something, it doesn‘t matter in what order I read them. The author of Pastrix hasn‘t lost her serious case of potty mouth, so if that‘s something that would bother you, avoid anything she‘s written. If you‘d like to know the story of how she went from (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 a strict Evangelical upbringing through her years as a drug-using, alcoholic, not-quite-an-atheist, standup comic, to her calling to be a Presbyterian Pastor who ministers to society‘s “outcasts,” read this book. 1y
Christine I love this book, and her! 1y
CatLass007 @Christine She‘s a favorite of mine. I recently found out she has a lot of YouTube videos too. When you read this, did you read an updated version that includes her afterword? 1y

Christine I'm guessing not, as I read it so long ago! 1y
CatLass007 @christine It was written in 2020. She‘s had a lot of changes in her life from when the book was first published. If you‘re one of those “what happened next” types like I am, I would suggest that you try to get your hands on a copy. 1y
Christine Oh nice, I‘ll have to check it out - thanks! 1y

LOVE. This goes on the shelf next to Anne Lamott & Rachel Held Evans & all my other favorite honest, vulnerable, strong, hilarious women of faith. This is my favorite kind of spiritual autobiography—an author who speaks of her journey of faith and relationship with God with such openness, humor, and lack of pretension—and a swear or five. This both challenged & encouraged me...now I need to bump up her book Accidental Saints in my reading queue!

BarbaraJean Forgot to add—this was another fantastic #MakeMeReadIt pick! 5y

I love this memoir. The one after this is pretty spectacular too. Nadia Bolz-Weber is an unconventional Lutheran pastor writing about her call, her path to becoming a pastor, and planting the church she pastors.

Picture from my neighborhood walk this evening—no audiobook tonight, instead I listened to an On Being interview with Nadia Bolz-Weber, whose memoir is tagged and is also on my never-ending TBR stack. This is my second neighborhood walk for week 2; I‘ll be back to walking the campus at work tomorrow! But first, an evening of baking cookies. 😁 #bookfitnesschallenge

BookwormAHN Nice walk 👏🏻 5y

Caterina Great job! 🙌 Ohhh I love On Being and also love Nadia Bolz-Weber. The tagged memoir is fantastic. I've gotten to hear her speak twice, and she makes me so proud to be part of the ELCA. ❤️ 5y

We are all being lazy this morning, and I think Owen is hoping I‘ll forget that I said we‘d all pitch in and clean the house today. While Anthony sleeps in a little longer, Sophie 😻 and I are relaxing with coffee and a good book. I‘ve loved Pastor Nadia‘s videos she did for Maker‘s Women, so I thought I‘d check out her first memoir and I‘m loving it. Just what I needed this rainy, lazy morning.

Well, turns out that not only do I not own any books with “Hell” in the title, I also don‘t really have any books with #sins in the title. Content is no doubt another matter...😂 But I‘m not feeling particularly creative tonight, so you get this: subtitled “The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner and Saint.” From the TBR—it will be read someday! #readingresolutions

BookInMyHands I loved this one. I saw the author preach in Portland a few years ago- she‘s amazing. 6y
LiterRohde I was introduced to her through YouTube recently - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VhmRkUtPra8&index=1&list=PLru7kHs-GAelfR5NiIfM95cK.... I did not know that she had any books. (edited) 6y
BarbaraJean @BookInMyHands @LiterRohde I‘ve read some short pieces from her online and have loved what she has to say! @jillrhudy I have that one on my TBR as well! A good friend was clearing out his shelves and I snagged both. I should really get one or the other into my “immediate TBR” before the year is out. 6y

Another from my bookstore trip yesterday. This one reveals the contradictory nature of my existence. Despite questioning everything about the existence of any higher being(s), I am intrigued by this woman's story and style. Those tattoos! And the book description, "...every thinking misfit suspicious of institutionalized religion, but who is still seeking transcendence and mystery." But I passed this time - too pricey. #booksIalmostbought

JamieArc Terry Gross did an interview with her on Fresh Air that was pretty interesting. I'm sure you could find it pretty easily and get the gist of the book. 7y
leslieseidel https://unmistakablecreative.com/podcast/best-of-house-for-all-sinnders-and-sain... I just listened to this podcast with the author and it was SO interesting! 7y

I really enjoyed this memoir about a woman‘s unconventional journey to/through faith and a career as a Lutheran minister. It's very thought-provoking and funny. While the book is probably not for everyone (all the swears! And/or all the God talk! 😛) I think many could appreciate parts of her perspective and voice.

"The greatest spiritual practice is just showing up." Nadia Bolz-Weber. This took me a bit to get into but once I did, I really enjoyed the fresh take on religion. I agreed with a lot, disagreed with some, but the real-life stories and the application of Bible learning to those stories, made the book an easy read. The chapters can be read independently but the theme does progress from early years to more recent. Definitely worth a reading.

Books about religion are not in my wheelhouse, but this one really worked for me. The focus on grace and acceptance was a message I appreciated and was a timely reminder to me that true faith isn't what we often see in the media and it isn't something that should ever be used to exclude or judge. I needed this more than I realized when I picked it up. #NonfictionNovember2016

Kimzey Are you at Davidson? Great school! How was the Rev. Bolz-Weber's lecture? I've been curious about her writing and ministry, but haven't followed up to learn more. 8y
Caterina @Kimzey Yeah, I'm a senior there! Her lecture was good overall. There were mediocre sections and a few really amazing parts that brought me to tears. I'm definitely excited to read her books! She has such a unique voice. I can let you know what I think about them when I'm finished! 8y
Kimzey @Caterina, I hope you enjoy your senior year! Yes, I'd love to see a review, when you're finished. I just watched a brief YouTube video of Bolz-Weber and may check out some more later. Thanks! 8y

I just went to hear Nadia Bolz-Weber speak at my college and was so moved by her lecture that I spontaneously bought both books that were for sale afterwards. There was something in me that needed to hear her tonight, even if I didn't 100% agree with everything she said. #theology #Christianity #religion #bookhaul #memoir #nonfictionnovember

LitHousewife I'll be curious to hear your thoughts. I bought the ebook when it was published, but I haven't read it yet - much like most ebook I buy... 9y
