Sabine's Notebook
Sabine's Notebook: In Which the Extraordinary Correspondence of Griffin & Sabine Continues | Nick Bantock
10 posts | 30 read | 11 to read
Don't miss The Pharos Gate, the final volume in the Griffin & Sabine story. Published simultaneously with the 25th-anniversary edition of Griffin & Sabine, the book finally shares what happened to the lovers.GriffinFoolish man. You cannot turn me into a phantom because you are frightened. You do not dismiss a muse at a whim. If you will not join me, then I will come to you. SabineSabine was supposed to be imaginary, a friend and lover that Griffin had created to soothe his loneliness. But she threatens to become embodied, to appear on his doorstep, in fact. So he runs.Griffin & Sabine, the most creative and talked-about bestseller of 1991, left readers on the edge of a precipice. With Sabine's Notebook, they beginalong with Griffinthe fall. Once again, the story is told through strangely beautiful postcards and richly decorated letters that must actually be pulled from their envelopes to be read. But this volume is also a sketchbook and diary kept by the possibly unreal Sabine, who is living in Griffin's house in London while he wanders through Europe, North Africa, and Asia, backwards through layers of ancient civilizationsand of himself.Filled with her delicately macabre drawings and notations, the notebook adds a darker element of visual intrigue to their complex and mysterious world. For the thousands who finished Griffin & Sabine and asked, "What happened next?," this second volume in the quartet provides the answersbut raises new and even more haunting questions of its own.

Last of my Christmas haul. I totally blame The Jolly Postman for mine & my daughter's obsession with books with real letters in! We are both building up a good little collection.

shanaqui If you have any recs (other than the Nick Bantock series, which I have), I review books about letters/post/etc for Postcrossing's blog! (I did Griffin & Sabine back in October: https://www.postcrossing.com/blog/2021/10/23/book-review-the-griffin-sabine-tril... 3y
marleed I love this series. I‘m missing one from the second set, Alexandria, and the m always on the lookout for it! 3y

Ahhh these books are so gorgeous. And that ending is so mysterious! What's going on!

(Image is non-spoilery, don't worry. It's from the middle of the book, and that letter isn't plot-critical.)

#LilithJuly Day 14: #Lovefool reminded me of this book which I love dearly. This quote is from the first book but seemed apt for the prompt: “Griffin, Foolish man. You cannot turn me into a phantom because you are frightened. You do not dismiss a muse at a whim. If you will not join me—then I will come to you. -Sabine.” Fats has written a very thorough and detailed analysis of tagged book here https://wp.me/pDlzr-Tq a and I shared my thoughts too.

TheLudicReader I loved these books, too. Beautiful and intriguing. 5y

I read this May 3rd & gave it 5 ⭐️on Good Reads. I love the art in this book as well as the dreamy quality of it. It‘s a gorgeous book and I need to pick up the third book sooner than later.

A short book of letters between Griffin and Sabine that continues their story. Sabine has shown up at Griffin‘s, but in his nervousness he has run away (to far off places no less). When he returns she is gone, but she waited... how did they miss each other?!? On to the next one to see if we find out.

Book 5 for #readathon

Tomigirl44 I read G & S years ago and loved them 😊 6y
Mollyanna @Tomigirl44 They are fun and perfect for readathon (especially later when I‘m losing energy). 6y
AlaMich I bought that book when it first came out. I was slightly obsessed with it, if I‘m being honest. 😬 6y
Mollyanna @AlaMich I can see that. They are very intriguing little books! (edited) 6y

#jubilantjuly day 13: #lostloves
It's hard to really say what this series is about (this is the second book) - is Sabine real? But this is what came to mind for #lostloves - their relationship? Or perhaps it's the sadly disappearing art of correspondence that's becoming a lost love.

Chachic I loved the format used in these books! 7y
