Chinese Cinderella
Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter | Adeline Yen Mah
A riveting memoir of a girl's painful coming-of-age in a wealthy Chinese family during the 1940s.A Chinese proverb says, "Falling leaves return to their roots." In Chinese Cinderella, Adeline Yen Mah returns to her roots to tell the story of her painful childhood and her ultimate triumph and courage in the face of despair. Adeline's affluent, powerful family considers her bad luck after her mother dies giving birth to her. Life does not get any easier when her father remarries. She and her siblings are subjected to the disdain of her stepmother, while her stepbrother and stepsister are spoiled. Although Adeline wins prizes at school, they are not enough to compensate for what she really yearns for -- the love and understanding of her family.Following the success of the critically acclaimed adult bestseller Falling Leaves, this memoir is a moving telling of the classic Cinderella story, with Adeline Yen Mah providing her own courageous voice. Includes 6-page photo insert. From the Hardcover edition.

It was hard for me to get into, but it was a quick and easy read after that. I felt deeply for Adeline and her childhood. I wished to give her a hug so many times throughout this read. Yet, I was slightly dissatisfied with the abrupt ending; however, this is just about her childhood which makes it understandable. I want to read more about her life and can‘t wait to read her autobiography ‘Falling Leaves‘.

2/5⭐ I'm sure this book is a helpful companion for people who were abused as children like the author was. #roll100

I am dreadfully behind on sharing reviews here but this was a great book and perfect for #readharder as a #yanonfiction! It's terribly sad for a lot of it, but that comes with the striking similarity to Cinderella, though turning it all around was not done the same way.

This is a true story of the author's childhood where she was ‘hated and despised by her family because she is believed to be the cause of her mothers death.‘ It tells of her struggle for acceptance and the consequences in her adult life.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My third time reading through this letter addressed to the scared little girl living inside each of us, my tears flowed as never before.

This is the type of book that wretches you heart so brutally that you want to fling it out the window, yet you stay your hand, because somehow in these heartfelt pages, you see traces of your own story.

I have been MIA for the last little bit as I tried my damnedest to finish up a bunch of books for this class I have been taking. I‘ve been missing Litsy a ton but it‘s too hard to get sucked in to your goodness 😂 After I finish up my project here, I‘m coming for you with loads of reviews. Be back soon.

Two memoirs about being unwanted by Yen Mah. Both of these have been on my radar for years.

Wonderful and heartbreaking tale of a child growing up hated by her family and ostracized by her stepmother. A true story of growing up in China. Hoping to use this thin my classroom this year. #teachersoflitsy

staci.reads We have used the original version Falling Leaves in junior English classes. I love that book! It made me so angry! 6y
Reviewsbylola I read this in high school and loved it so much. 6y
APLitlife @Reviewsbylola I am so glad to hear this. 6y
APLitlife @staci.reads I have ordered that one to read also. This one seems to be more for younger students, but still very good. 6y

This book broke my heart. What this child endured at the hands of her family made me furious, sick, sad and more than a little thankful that my children are safe, loved and wanted. This is one of my 14 year old‘s school readings. As she was adopted from China, we had some deep discussions about “unwanted” children - both kept by biological family and given up by biological family.

Reviewsbylola I read this years and years ago and loved it. 6y

What a sad, but ultimately triumphant story. The author tells about her life from ages 10-14 in this book. She's an unwanted daughter and overcomes so much. I will be picking up her other books. #nonfiction

Chinese cinderella is a biography written by Adeline Yen Ma about Adeline Yen Ma. Adeline describes the struggles of being the youngest in a family that doesn't want you, and being treated poorly. The traditions of Chinese culture are infused throughout the story, with pictures of the family. Adeline is the youngest daughter, but she is also the family punching bag. Her mother died in childbirth with her so she is considered unlucky. Adeline is mistreated by all except her grandfather and aunt.

She is forced to live with any number of indignities and outright cruelties. As she struggles, she uses school to show her worth. Her family continues to make her suffer.

It is a story of ultimate triumph. Well told. It's for YA.

This YA memoir illustrates well the injustices inherent in favoring some siblings over others. In this case, the author and her four older siblings --the children of the dead first wife-- were given the bare minimum, while the two children of the young, fashionable second wife were treated like royalty. The most interesting aspect of the book is the look at Chinese history and culture, including the notes about the writing system. I enjoyed it.

The allure of books for a young girl who is unwanted and (mostly) unloved.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Even though I'm not in her situation, I still need reading for just this reason. It helps balance all the adult things in life. 😀 8y

Starting summer reading with Chinese Cinderella. Then I'll have to begin my search for some middle grade fiction set in South America. Suggestions?
