Unnatural Habits
Unnatural Habits: A Phryne Fisher Mystery | Kerry Greenwood
28 posts | 27 read | 16 to read
1929: Girls are going missing in Melbourne. Little, pretty golden haired girls. And not just pretty. Three of them are pregnant, poor girls from the harsh confines of the Magdalene Laundry. People are getting nervous. Polly Kettle, a pushy, self important Girl Reporter with ambition and no sense of self preservation, decides to investigate and promptly goes missing herself. Its time for Phryne and Dot to put a stop to this and find Polly Kettle before something quite irreparable happens to all of them. Its all piracy and dark cellars, convents and plots, murder and mystery .... and Phryne finally finds out if its true that blondes have more fun.

Book 19 in the Phryne Fisher series is one of the best imo, definitely in the top 3! I enjoyed listening to this audiobook over the past few weeks while doing puzzles (it‘s quite relaxing, I‘d highly recommend it!). The more I read these books the more Phryne cements herself as possibly my all-time favorite book character (after Scarlett!). She‘s such a badass. This one had a great mystery & the supporting characters are excellent as always. 5⭐️

I am wondering why I have never read any of Kerry Greenwood‘s Phryne Fisher Mysteries before this. What a great character she is. Lovely light reading/ listening experience😍I loved the voice of Stephanie Daniel telling this story. #cozycrime #ozfiction

I liked the TV adaptation of this series, so now I‘m reading the books. Think this is book 19. Phryne tackles connected mysteries including a missing reporter, a white slavery ring, a corrupt home for unwed mothers, inhumane conditions at a church run laundry, and someone performing vigilante style vasectomies. Greenwood bases some aspects on actual historical events and places which adds an interesting touch.

Bk19 Of The Phryne Fisher series is done. Not one of my favourites, the true to life conditions in the Catholic laundry infuriates me & makes me happy I‘m not catholic. Gorgeous cover though. When a female reporter goes missing, Phryne goes looking for her in the places she‘s been investigating. After uncovering a white slavers ring & a house of exploiting unmarried mothers, she takes on her biggest foe, the Catholic Church. #phryneappreciationclub

Lazy morning and book is over. Time to get out of bed, find some lunch, and get a little bit of work done. I've got next Phryne on Audible so I can listen while I work.

Enjoyed this Phryne book much more than the first one I read, although I still found it a little over-the-top. I don't feel the need to read this entire series, but I am curious about Miss Fisher's backstory. Phryne fans of Litsy, do any of the books focus more on her youth?

Amie You get a brief explanation of her back story in the first book. Not sure if that's the other one you read. 7y
Amie Oh, and I think you get some of her story following WWI in France this one but I can't remember if there's as much in the book as in the TV show. 7y
GlassAsDiamonds Murder on the Ballarat Train isn‘t Greenwood‘s best (I don‘t think anyway!!). Phryne‘s sister pops up in The Castlemaine Murders and gives more family background and Ruddy Gore introduces Lin Chung who is then a constant .... they‘re best in order. The characters really do develop. The only one that‘s easily read out of order is Death Before Wicket, Which is set in Sydney and gives more of Dot‘s family. 7y

And of course l'll couldn't forget Phryne. Born poor, turned extremely rich, she always uses her money to help. I like this thread of her.

One of the best #MissFisher mysteries l've read so far. A good, suitable complex puzzle, personal involvement for Phryne and a great insight into the lives of women in Western society in the 1920s, particularly those that stepped out of their place.

Actually, sometimes the social portrayal obliterates the plot. But l won't complain

JazzFeathers @BellaBookNook lt really depends on the single book. Some are good, some are fantastic, some other are so-so. It's a very uneven series 7y

Let's see whether l can finish this novel tonight. Still 20% to go.

I am enjoying, even if there are a few episodes, especially in the middle of the book, that seem more concerned with depicting a reality of the time than actualky tell the story. But it all seems pertinent, so l won't complain 😊

This is the second to last Miss Phryne Fisher story, and I am going to miss her when she's gone. No19 in the series, Unnatural Habits is about missing girls, the Catholic church & a white slavery ring. Phryne saves a female reporter from being ambushed after she starts asking questions about missing girls. When the reporter goes missing as well, she feels obligated to find her, which brings her from high class brothels to a convent run laundry.5⭐️

#readjanuary #day24 #page24ofcurrentread This is my current book, this is book 19 in the Phryne Fisher series. Only one more book and I'm at the end of her fascinating stories. I really hope she writes some more, I'm pretty sure she is still writing but the last book was published in 2013!😬#Phryneappreciationclub

#readjanuary #day23 #bookandyourfavesnack If I had to choose one out of the array of healthy and very unhealthy🤤snacks I eat when reading, twisties would be at the top of the list. Definitely have to be cheese twisties, those chicken pretenders are awful! I eat way too much of these, once you start eating them you can't stop till the bags empty. Icecream is the other thing that I eat too much of. But it's so yummy, and there's so many flavours!😩
