The Palace Job
The Palace Job | Patrick Weekes
The most powerful man in the republic framed her, threw her in prison, and stole a priceless elven manuscript from her family. With the help of a crack team that includes an illusionist, a unicorn, a death priestess, a talking warhammer, and a lad with a prophetic birthmark, Loch must find a way into the floating fortress of Heaven's Spire-and get past the magic-hunting golems and infernal sorcerers standing between her and the vault that holds her family's treasure. It'd be tricky enough without the military coup and unfolding of an ancient evil prophecy-but now the determined and honourable Justicar Pyvic has been assigned to take her in. But hey, every plan has a few hitches. "From one of the writers that brought you the critically acclaimed Mass Effect [video game] trilogy comes a new Fantasy twist on the Heist genre."

Thank you for this #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView 😁

1️⃣ Oooh, this is a tough question for me! Usually, I prefer books to have a quicker pace. However, there is something magical about a slow burn done right when the payoff is worth it!

2️⃣ Tagged! I‘m happy when a book has one great twist, but “The Palace Job” has one in almost every chapter. What started as a seemingly breezy heist story turned out to have many more layers than I was expecting!

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! Happy Tuesday! 🤩📖📚 3y
PathfinderNicole Patrick Weekes helped write two of my favorite video game series of all time and I can‘t believe they wrote a novel and I didn‘t know it!! (edited) 3y
DaveGreen7777 @PathfinderNicole Oooh, I hope you enjoy this one! 😀 3y

DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead I just found out they wrote for Mass Effect myself! 😱 (edited) 3y
RaeLovesToRead Sorry, just realised their pronouns are they/them. Look forward to reading the book (and playing the trilogy again) 😊 3y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead Ooops, I didn‘t know their pronouns either. ☹️ Hope you enjoy the book! I don‘t recall it reminding me of Mass Effect or Dragon Age in any way, other than it features a team made up of several fascinating companions! 3y
RaeLovesToRead I'm always up for a fantasy heist ❤ 3y
PathfinderNicole I didn‘t know their pronouns either and changed my original comment accordingly! I can‘t wait to read this one, I might have to move it up my tbr… @RaeLovesToRead I still need to finish playing the legendary edition but I just don‘t want it to end yet!! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @PathfinderNicole On my phone it won't let me alter comments for some reason so I deleted mine and started again! 🤔🤔 I actually didn't get that far into mass effect the first time because I wouldn't leave the citadel until I'd scanned all those spidery things... and I couldn't find the last one 😭😄 Going to play the trilogy once I've finished Dishonored 2 😊 3y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead @PathfinderNicole I had such a love/hate relationship with the Citadel in Mass Effect 1! On the one hand, I loved the world building and the glimpse into so many characters lives. But on the other hand… WOW, was there a lot of superfluous fetch quests there, and the completionist in me felt compelled to do every single one! 😩 3y

#ThreeOfClubs #Preparation

I immediately thought of the rogues from “The Palace Job”! These notorious con artists have got to make many preparations in order to stay one or two (or 300) steps ahead of their mark! 😉

@Branwen @Meaw_catlady @ErinSueMreads Would you like to play? 😀

If you like comic fantasy that combines humour with subversive undertones, might I suggest The Rogues of the Republic trilogy? This is a genuinely funny series and deserves far more love. Also there‘s a sassy unicorn 🦄

Thank you for this Precious #ManicMonday @JoScho 😁

#LetterP
📖 - “(The) Palace Job” by Patrick Weekes (Fantasy novels usually lean more heavily into either comedy or drama, but this one blended the two genres perfectly!)
📝 - Pratchett, Terry
🎥 - “Pan‘s Labyrinth”
📺 - “Pinky and the Brain” (Admit it, the theme song is playing in your head, now, isn‘t it!)
🎤 - Perry, Steve (Journey)
🎸 - Pink Floyd
🎶 - “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix

JoScho I love Pinky and the Brain!!! 4y
DaveGreen7777 @JoScho NARF!!! 😂 🐁 4y
Zoes_Human Pratchett is one of the best that ever was, and Pan's Labyrinth was brilliant.
(edited) 4y
DaveGreen7777 @Zoes_Human Agreed on both counts! 😁 4y

Half heist book, half magical quest book with a cast of really great characters? Yes, please.

It did not disappoint! Stayed up past my bedtime to finish this and it was everything I wanted it to be and then some. Heist, sarcasm, a little political intrigue, motley crew of equally interesting, purposeful characters, and a story that was wrapped up well enough to stand on its own but also leaves plenty of room for the story to continue, which it does because it‘s a trilogy!!

GrilledCheeseSamurai I loved this series! I also love that I was just thinking about these books today and here I find someone talking about it on Litsy! 🤗 6y
KtheBookwyrm @GrilledCheeseSamurai I don‘t know how I missed these, they‘ve been out forever and I‘d never heard of them until recently. I have to get my library to purchase the other 2 so I can read them immediately. 6y
iread2much This was a great book! I didn‘t finish the series, but if I ever get my kindle prime subscription back, I will 6y

This is going to be one of those books I finish in a single day. Just over half way through, only another 3 hours or so if reading left, and I don‘t want to put it down.

Had my library order this and it came in earlier than I expected, which has thrown off my TBR for this month, but I started it last night and I‘m already hooked. I love heist movies and the first chapter was a prison break scene done very much in the style of the Oceans movies or Now You See Me. I‘m so excited for this. Female mastermind, motley crew of thieves, high stakes heist, revenge. The highest of expectations.

Finished book # 2 for #4in48readathon late last night! The Palace Job was a super fast read. Not as good as Six of Crows but it was definitely similar if you‘re looking for a good read-alike. It‘s part of a series so we‘ll see if I continue.

Now onto book # 3!

BeansPage Doing good!🎉🎉 7y

About halfway through this one and I‘m on the fence. It‘s a heist mixed with fantasy (which I‘ve discovered I can‘t seem to get enough of), but I wish I had more background on the characters. They‘re likable but I don‘t feel like I really know them. We‘ll see where I land after another 200 pages 🤞🏻

#4in48readathon

ReadingRover I have this on audiobook which I‘m yet to listen to. 7y
rekahlee @ReadingRover I think it‘ll be fun on audio! I‘m definitely enjoying the story, just wish there was more characterization 7y

This story starts in the sky (though no mention of whether it's blue), and I figured I'd snap a photo of the sky by place since we've just received a thunderstorm alert. We won't have blue skies for long today. #MrBlueSky #JuneTunz

Scene: woman dressed in her jimjam bottoms and slippers, chasing the postlady across the complex courtyard to make sure she didn't have to carve out a day to go to the ill-placed postal outlet. Success though, I exchanged the card for the box and got this gem along with the last of my #summersolsticebookexchange #summersantagoespostal books. Just have to wait for the finisher to complete my stitching project, and pick up some local stuff.

mcipher I love that you say jimjams, too! 😝 Congrats on avoiding an inconvenient errand. Those are the worst! 8y

I know some of you love the caper genre as much as me, this is a goodie. As funny and as tricky as any story about a team running a con should be. The first has been sitting on my shelf for too many years but with only 100 pages left after finally starting it, I went out and bought the rest of the trilogy. How's that for a endorsement? Good enough to spend real money on.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds good to me! I tried this on audiobook once and just couldn't get into it....maybe I need to try it again in print. 😉 8y
RanaElizabeth @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I actually wondered if you had read this! My only quibble was the main character's name is Loch. And you know, there can only be one person by that name running a con. Even if it is spelled differently, it felt weird. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RanaElizabeth LOL! I don't know if I've read that other one, but I know the feeling. It sounded so good at the time, but the audio just didn't catch me...and sometimes it's just the voice, narration, or my mood at the time. So it's definitely one I should revisit again. I'm glad you really enjoyed it! My next caper to complete is Crooked Kingdom, after Six of Crows. 8y

This was described as a mix of Firefly and Leverage, but set in a fantasy world with magic. I'm only about 10% in, but so far it has been pretty good, with lots of action right off the bat.
