Librarian spy Irene and her apprentice Kai return for another "tremendously fun, rip-roaring adventure," (A Fantastical Librarian) third in the bibliophilic fantasy series from the author of The Masked City. Never judge a book by its cover... Due to her involvement in an unfortunate set of mishaps between the dragons and the Fae, Librarian spy Irene is stuck on probation, doing what should be simple fetch-and-retrieve projects for the mysterious Library. But trouble has a tendency to find both Irene and her apprentice, Kai--a dragon prince--and, before they know it, they are entangled in more danger than they can handle... Irene's longtime nemesis, Alberich, has once again been making waves across multiple worlds, and, this time, his goals are much larger than obtaining a single book or wreaking vengeance upon a single Librarian. He aims to destroy the entire Library--and make sure Irene goes down with it. With so much at stake, Irene will need every tool at her disposal to stay alive. But even as she draws her allies close around her, the greatest danger might be lurking from somewhere close--someone she never expected to betray her...

The farther I get into this series, the less I feel I can say in the face of compounding spoilers. I will say I'm deeply appreciative of the less tense point this particular volume ended on, and hopeful about a certain relationship dynamic. If you want fantasy and adventure with believable interpersonal tension and a sprinkle of interoffice and interworld politics then I highly recommend giving the series a try.

julesG Avoiding spoilers is a real problem with series like this one. 1y

Book 3 of the Invisible Library series

#SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

I'm trying to come up with a spoiler free review. I can't.

It was an interesting ride. Books need to be stolen, one book out from under Catherine the Great's nose. Meanwhile the Library is in lock down and Alberich still at large. Irene has to find a way to outsmart Alberich.

Spoiler in comments.

julesG The mole was so obvious. I clocked them right from the first sentence/appearance. 1y
Lunakay I don't remember the details, but the whole series is great fun! After the last book I sort of came to the opinion that some things are in plain sight for a reason. 1y
julesG @Lunakay I think it does make sense, but it was so obvious that I thought how can Irene not see/notice it? 1y

End of Chapter 6

Grmph! I feel as furious as Irene.

@Robotswithpersonality

Robotswithpersonality @julesG I'm sincerely hoping Vale's improved state at the end of this book means he's going to be less of a moron about their possible increased intimacy. 🙄 1y
julesG @Robotswithpersonality I fear he's going to insist on being a proper gentleman. 😖 1y
Robotswithpersonality @julesG Phooey! Phooey I say! Though this provides some very amusing options if it ends up being Kai, as good friend and confidante, 😉who helps to convince him... 1y

Book 3 finds our characters back in London after a daring escape from Chaotic Venice only to find them faced with some very unsettling events…burning gates, giant spiders, werewolves , the descent into madness, and the return of an old enemy.

A heartstopping third book in the Librarian series. Once again we are faced with a thickening plot showing repercussions that make themselves known from actions taken in the books prior. The protagonist left with no choice but to take drastic measures with each page.
Finishing with an unexpected twist, a page-gripping fight and more actions to pay for as the series moves onto the 4th book.
Surely Cogman can't surprise us anymore... Right?

Husband: So what did you do this afternoon?

What I think: I‘ve ridden on the back of a dragon, jumped between worlds, foiled assassination attempts, sleuthed with a great detective and generally helped save the day.

What I say: oh, just reading.

So good I finished the book in 3 DAYS! 😱 & now sadly have to wait till Monday to have the next book delivered. Every aspect of the previous book was kicked up a notch, from relationship tension to action to badass bookness & magic. Even so, the plot thickens & the reader is left with even more mystery and suspense at the end of the book.

Monday better get here fast!!!!

How I thought my day would go: haircuts, ice cream, new books

How my day really went: shopping waiting for haircuts, haircuts, ice cream, bookstore #1 no new books, child has accident, go home child changes, see a movie with child, child plays at mall play area, drive across town for dinner, check bookstore #2, one new book & 2 more I‘ll have to order online.

At least they had the 3rd book in a series, the one I really needed!

Time to dig in!

The perfect blend of science fictiony fantasy magic strangeness, well written, the main character is /lovely/ and the supports have their own things to deal with and don't just exist for the MC. I'm gonna stop babbling nonsensically now but know that this series is A+.

Really happy with this story. The MC is confronted with an old enemy she only barely defeated in the first book in this series. It felt viable and gave us some more insight into the MC‘s thoughts and feelings.

I only realised in this book, third in this series, that the MC is about my age. Maybe that‘s why I like her so much? She has a no-nonsense attitude, with little patience for non-essential conventionalities.
👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

LittleBug Simultaneously though, she has realistic insecurities, caused by life choices, or inevitabilities. Really enjoyed identifying with her☺️ (edited) 6y

It took me a couple tries to get through this book before I had to return it to the library. I‘m still not sure how I feel about the main female character after three books. However, I definitely like the main male characters, the world, and the plot enough to continue reading the series.

Whilst on probation for her exploits in the previous book, Irene and assistant, Kai, join with the other Librarians in thwarting Alberich‘s plan to destroy the Library.

Again all the ingredients were here for an engrossing read, but it all fell a little short for me. I‘m still not entirely sure why this series doesn‘t work for me. Rating: 3 ⭐️

That... was less final than I remembered in terms of Alberich. Also, i'm tired of the will-they-won't-they between Irene, Vale and Kai. Either be different and make it a threesome, or dismiss the romance altogether and skip the stereotyped blah.

It's not that i don't enjoy the books -- i do. But I'm tired of the love triangle.

Another solid entry to this series. I love Irene, Kai, and The Library. I'm lukewarm on Vale though, he's just okay to me. My only issue was that I thought this was the end of the series, so when I got to the end I was seriously confused. It looks like the next one comes out this month and it's set in the 1920s!
