Three Muskateers | Alexandre Dumas
post image

I am starting The Three Muskateers today and am excited about it! I have never read it, plus, it's part of the Stitching Book Club on Instagram. (@stitchingbookclub) If you are a cross-stitcher, check it out. It is a 4 month read-a-long/stitch-a-long and the first part of the pattern was released today. This is also the first of four classics for the year. The Secret Garden, Frankenstein, and A Christmas Carol are the next three.

This was my go to read for our recent vacation over Thanksgiving, but it didn't last me a week! I could not put this book down. I'm already into book two, The Ask and The Answer. Definitely a pick! Because I was glued to my Kindle for this book, I gave it a rare 5⭐.

I have had no reading mojo for months, until this book happened. I really liked Dark Matter so I had high expectations. Recursion totally lived up! This book is a super fun ride and took me where I didn't expect it to go. Not to mention along the way I got reacquainted with my Kindle. Now I have so many books I want to read, I'm having trouble choosing! This one gets a rare 5⭐.

As summer speeds by, I'm still trying hard to get a little reading in here and there. I finished this book yesterday and overall thought it was a fun read. The story is about one sister who kills, and one sister who enables and is set in Lagos, Nigeria. I listened to the audiobook as well as read the book, and enjoyed both. 4/5 ⭐

A finish! Eggshells is the August selection for my RL book club. I listened to this one and am so glad I did because the Irish accent never gets old. I started out really enjoying the writing style and all of Vivian's odd thoughts and behaviors, which are often humorous as she tries to connect with people. It's like a stream of consciousness and introverted me could relate to Vivian in many ways. But, it stretched a bit too long. 3.5/5 🌟

Yup....that about sums up my summer so far. I am in need of some reading mojo! I have been unmotivated and uninspired by every book I have tried recently. The books I want to read are huge, but overwhelming to start. How do I get out of my reading funk?

BookmarkTavern I have always gotten myself out of a reading funk by finding an old favorite and rereading it. Remind myself why I love reading, you know? 5y
LibrarianRyan I get it. Im not much better. 5y
Stacy_31 Same happens here. I get so stoked about reading a book, and then a chapter or two in and I just lose interest. I started reading graphic novels of some old favorites. The Lottery was a good one and quick. Currently I‘m working on TKAM. Not my usual genre, but gives me a kickstart when I need it. 5y

Ingerella @wanderinglynn @Megabooks @Stacy_31 @LibrarianRyan @chaoticgoodhufflepuff Thank you so much for the suggestions! I went back to my book shelf last night to see if anything inspired me and I settled on Caroline, about the Ingalls family. I haven't read it before, but Little House definitely feels like comfort zone reading. It seems to have done the trick..so far! I read quite a bit before falling asleep! It's been a bit since I've posted, but I have an audiobook finish! I really loved listening to Ms. Pat's story, narrated by the author. Has anyone started watching the Masterpiece Classics adaptation of Les Miserables? It's 6 episodes that started Sunday, and is airing on PBS. If the first episode is any indication, I think it's going to be a great series, but it definitely made me want to read the book. So, I started it on Serial Reader. I've never read a complete book on Serial Reader but I'm going to give it a try. 2 installments down, 131 to go!

I loved this book so much. It took me a few chapters to understand what was happening but once I caught on, I was all in. I can see where it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly was mine. I can't wait to read the "companion novel" A God in Ruins. I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but this was a 5⭐ read for me.

For the most part, I enjoyed this story of multiple generations of a Korean family living in Japan. It felt a little disjointed in the last third of the book, and I think I enjoyed the story of the elder family members the most, but I would give this a recommendation.

What type of commentary does Atkinson make on the English
approach to war? Why do you think Atkinson portrayed one of Ursula‘s lives in Germany,

DivineDiana All caught up! Stranger and stranger!!! 6y
Ingerella I think she's illustrating that the war was terrible on both sides. Ultimately Ursula was just as at risk. In terms of the approach, there were a few comments that indicated she felt the Nazis worked almost like a machine, and the British weren't going to the same effort to prepare for a war. It also seemed as though her family in Fox Corner were pretty removed from how terrible it was in places like London. 6y
Laura317 That one scene with Frieda! 😭 It was interesting seeing the war from the Germany side. The big jump in time was a jolt though. 6y
Pruzy It really was an interesting section! Probably one of the better sections of the book! Grounded the story in historical events instead of running parallel! 6y
daena I felt the same way @Laura317 The scene with Frieda was intense. 6y

We've had some tough reading this last week, and we are still in the middle of "A Long Hard War." This week I found 2 interesting questions.

Question 1! On page 379, Ursula faces a bleak end in Germany with her daughter, Frieda. She chooses

death over life for the first time, saying, “Something had cracked and broken and the order of

things had changed.” What do you think she means by that?
@Pruzy
#LAL2018 #LifeAfterLife

Ingerella Maybe she's referring to how everything is turned upside down. For example when before the war, food and the essentials for survival were just a given, now they have to search and scrounge for everything. Also, they used to worry about what was happening in the west with the war, but now the rumors of the Russians are more terrifying. When before Ursula worried about Freida not surviving, the real worry now IS her surviving. 6y

Happy Sunday! Let's talk about this past week's "A Lovely Day Tomorrow" trifecta. At the very beginning of this section, there was a quote from Sylvie that got me thinking. " 'Well, we all get on,'...'one way or another. And in the end we all arrive at the same place. I hardly see that it matters how we get there.' It seemed to Ursula that how you got there was the whole point..."
Who do you agree with?
@Pruzy
#LAL2019 #LifeAfterLife

Ingerella For the record, this question came from online discussion guide. I really liked how it got my wheels turning and thinking about fate and destiny. 6y
cobwebmoth I ultimately agree with Ursula. I feel like the journey is often more important than the destination. But in Ursula's case, with her gift/curse, there may be more to it. 6y
See All 13 Comments
readordierachel Me too @cobwebmoth And since Ursula frequently has deja vu and borderline premonitions that are telling her to do or avoid things, *how* she gets to wherever she's going seems to have more weight. 6y
Meaw_catlady This section I kept on asking why does she not seem to have deja vu like she used to as a kid? Like if she did she would know not to go to that apartment. Back to your question tho Clearly for Ursula her choices do make the difference for where she ends up. It changes every time . But she sure does seem to end up miserable no matter the circumstances. 6y
daena I feel that the journey is just as important as the destination, but it seems for Ursula that journey seems to cause so much anguish and pain. I wonder if that destination ultimately is shaped by the journey. @Meaw_catlady I got that feeling as well. She does not seem to have the same premonitions as she did as a child. This seemed so much more profound. 6y
Dogearedcopy This seems like a variation of the issue as to whether the end justifies the means and I don't think it's really answered in the reading thus far. We've seen Ursula try to change the outcome of events, by fair means and foul (the flu cycle) and yet now as an adult her choices do not seem deliberate in re the pivotal moments of her fate. But the question does ping back to the opening chapter and the discussion of Hitler.... 6y
Dogearedcopy It will be interesting to see if/how the narrative resolves back to the moment in the beginning. 6y
Ingerella @Dogearedcopy I think that's definitely the direction my brain was headed, and I am anxious to see if this is where we are headed. @daena You are thinking along the same lines as me. @Meaw_catlady I wondered the same thing. 6y
Ingerella @cobwebmoth I agree with you and @readordierachel in that ultimately it's the journey. But in Ursula's case I'm not so sure. Although in 3 different scenarios, the outcome was the same but her journeys were pretty different. Maybe this is Ursula's argument 6y
Pruzy To me it seems like an interplay between fate (lot of events she experiences can‘t be avoided, only tweaked) and how her Deja vu lets her subtly alter her narrative 6y
Pruzy Thanks for joining us this weekend, everyone! 6y
DivineDiana @Pruzy I agree with you. This section was painful, and I so wanted deliverance for Ursula. The journey gives purpose to life. A very interesting question. 6y

This week's section was tough! I felt so much for Ursula and the trajectory her life had taken, but then relief in the life that followed. One question I came across on a list of questions for this book is, Do you think Ursula's ability to relive her life is a gift or a curse? My mind goes in lots of directions when I think about this question, especially after "Like A Fox in a Hole". What do you think?
#LAL2019 #LifeAfterLife
@Pruzy

Meaw_catlady The whole time I was screaming! Just end it!! You can be born again. And I was like. Hmmm but she was told by her family and her therapist that she was just imagining it all. So if she did end it she still had that fear that she wouldn‘t get another chance. Also there is the question of if you‘re born again in a different timeline is it even really you or just another version of you with some of the other memories still... okay that was a spiral. 6y
Pruzy I think it was the difference between Ursula realizing she didn‘t just have to survive, but that she could self actualize. It took her a whole miserable life to realize that she could avoid not only mistakes that were lethal, but mistakes whose ramifications would crush her soul rather than outright kill her! 6y
See All 15 Comments
Dogearedcopy In this section we have an instance in which Ursula wants to die but is denied, and another instance in which she wants to live but darkness descends anyway. At this point, I think the "ability" is a curse because she has no control over it; and even her actions within her life are limited by how much she trusts her intuition (which is challenged by her mother and psychiatrist.) 6y
Pruzy @Dogearedcopy However, her intuition seems to be obtained from her previous lives, so it is not like she has absolutely no control or benefits from her ability what so ever. If it was truly a curse she would be living over the same death again and again, I think 6y
Dogearedcopy @pruzy She can effect actions or trajectories within a segment of her life, and as a result the when and where the darkness falls to a degree, but as to whether she dies is beyond her control. "The darkness" can neither save her, nor can she escape it once the moment is at hand. What becomes less clear is the power that decides, i.e. When Ursula was near death, and she reached for it, why did it draw back? 6y
Pruzy @Dogearedcopy Interesting! That makes it sound like the ability has some sort of will of its own where it is trying to make sure Ursula learns whatever lesson she needs to learn on this iteration of her life. 6y
cobwebmoth Interesting thoughts. I think it can be a gift when she gets to try again, but this section made it seem more fickle, more of a curse. I have never been so eager for a character I like to die! 6y
Pruzy @cobwebmoth Haha, good point! 6y
Laura317 I think it‘s more of a mixed blessing. Ursula is able to “fix” some things, but she has no control over the when. My love of Doctor Who come out here in this: are the things she can fix not fixed point in time? Can she ever go too far to the point of making things worse? 6y
Ingerella @cobwebmoth I felt the same..I wanted that life to be over for her. 6y
Ingerella @Dogearedcopy @Pruzy I'm on the fence as to whether it's a curse. It's a curse in one life and a blessing in the next. Ultimately will it turn out to be a blessing the more lives she lives? It seems to me that in order to live as long as she is now, she's stacking up the moments of "intuition" to get there. It's unfortunate that she has to suffer first in order to benefit from the suffering. Not sure if benefit is the right word to use though. 6y
Ingerella @Laura317 I definitely don't think everytime she follows her "intuition" the outcome is always better. In one of the instances where she tried to stop Bridget from spreading the flu, more people died than in previous lives. I am with you..it's a mixed blessing. 6y
DivineDiana My heart broke for Ursula in this chapter. Although she had been reborn previously, and had been able to alter her previous life, I did not know for certain that she would still have that ability. It was a very tense section for me! I‘m voting for gift. Don‘t we all yearn at times for a do-over? (edited) 6y
Ingerella @DivineDiana True! But it's terrible what she has to keep going through in order to get to move on. I also keep thinking about all the people around her in each life who keep going on. I think of them all as parallel universes because what happens in each life to the people who aren't Ursula? 6y

I struggled to get through this book from the #LMPBC swap. I generally do not read non-fiction so I'm not sure if it was the genre or the writing style that kept me from wanting to read it. Overall, both the story and the way the author chose to tell it were interesting, but it just didn't hook me.

Hello Buddy Read Friends,

Some of our readers have gotten a bit behind this week, so we have decided to give week 3 another life! We'll push back the discussion one week to next Sunday. I hope those of you who are caught up won't be too disappointed and will be with us next Sunday. For now...I'm off to see Hamilton!
Happy Sunday!!
@Pruzy #LAL2019 #buddyread #LifeAfterLife

DivineDiana Thank you for the update! Hamilton!!! 👏🏻🎼👏🏻 6y
Ingerella @DivineDiana Totally spur of the moment! Hubby surprised me with tickets and it's 2 hrs away! I'm so excited!! 6y

Laura317 That‘s understandable to wait. I caught up, but totally understand. 🙂 6y
DivineDiana How fantastic! What a guy! Are you seeing it on Broadway? 6y
Ingerella @DivineDiana No, Orlando. This is the touring Hamilton. When we were in NYC a couple of years ago we tried to win them in the lottery every day but didn't get lucky. It's ok though, I'll see it in Orlando. It will be fun to see on stage the songs that I already have memorized! 6y
Ingerella @Laura317 Thanks so much! We'll be back next week. 6y
DivineDiana Absolutely!!! 6y
squirrelbrain That‘s fine! I‘ve read the section but I‘m bookshop crawling in London this weekend....! Enjoy Hamilton! 6y

Thanks for all of the great discussion today. You all had lots of interesting insight and @Pruzy, some very thought provoking questions. I'm still pondering my own answers.
Week 3 starts tomorrow and this section is a bit longer than our last two. It also covers just one chapter, Like A Fox In a Hole. Happy reading!

Happy Discussion Sunday! I loved this last section because we got a little more clarity on Ursula's ability, and also because I'm so intrigued.
Head on over to @Pruzy to see his 2 really great questions to get our discussion going. My question is: Do you think Ursula has gained more awareness of her ability? Also, for those of you on the fence, did this section pull you in, or the opposite?

#LAL2019 #Buddyread #Lifeafterlife

squirrelbrain I think that Ursula has gained more awareness of her ability. Initially there were a couple of signposts to us, the readers. At the beginning of Armistice 11 November 1918: ‘Every summer, it was beginning to seem to Ursula, was a dream‘. 6y
squirrelbrain Then a few pages later: ‘Ursula tried to imagine not being Ursula but was defeated by the impossibility of the task‘ in the context of people being ‘shellshocked‘ during the war. This to me implies more that she can‘t imagine not ever existing. 6y
See All 17 Comments
CoffeeNBooks Yes, I definitely think Ursula has gained more awareness of her ability, and that she can use it to help others. This week's section was more difficult for me to keep track of with the parallel timelines, but I started taking notes and that helped. 6y
daena Ursula has for sure gained more awareness. The section of her during the war was heartbreaking and so well written. I feel myself even more attached to her character and experiences. 6y
Meaw_catlady Yes she definitely is more aware and begins to use it to help her family. The part where she dies over and over to try to make sure her siblings and herself don‘t contract that flu is so heartbreaking . 6y
Ingerella @squirrelbrain Good points. I hadn't picked up on those lines but I did notice the lines "she felt as though she had been awake for a hundred years and more." 6y
Ingerella @daena @CoffeeNBooks @Meaw_catlady @Meaw_catlady I agree. Her repeated attempts at saving herself and family was really heartbreaking each time she failed. I do think she has awareness at the time..do you think it's in the form of a sixth sense, or something she can plan ahead with? 6y
cobwebmoth The influenza sections were rough, but I did enjoy seeing her try to correct things because she knew what was coming. It strikes me as more of a sense of knowing something is off, but maybe as she gets more adept at using this sense she could plan more for the future. 6y
Laura317 I found Ursula‘s attempt to keep the ‘flu from her family so sweet and heartbreaking at the same time. Question: does the recurrence of the 11th in the dates mean anything? 6y
sblbooks Yes, she definitely has a sixth sense about things. I was one of those on the fence, but I'm coming around. I enjoyed it much more this week. 6y
Pruzy @Laura317 Oh very interesting pattern with the dates! I mean I guess the first world war ended on Nov 11 1918, but if other sections are having big events occur on 11ths that must be a clue of something 6y
Pruzy @cobwebmoth Yes, I feel the book is working towards Ursula being able to reign in her abilities. Although, I‘m not sure if the Influenza needed so many re-dos. It‘s bad, we get it, let‘s move on with the story! 6y
readordierachel @Pruzy Maybe I'm too morbid, but I thought those repeated death scenes were really effective 🙃 Like @cobwebmoth says, it shows her learning (sort of?). 6y
Ingerella @readordierachel I agree with you on those scenes. 6y
readordierachel @Ingerella Sad but kinda necessary 6y
DivineDiana Yes, she definitely now knows that she has some sort of power to change the past. We see her consciously attempting to protect her family with different scenarios until she gets it right! It must be so taxing and scary for her! 6y

Happy Sunday! It's discussion time! @Pruzy got us started with a great question this morning that I'm still pondering.
I'd like to know what everyone thinks of the book so far. It's still very early but I'd love to know your over all first impressions.
Also, what do you think is happening with Ursula? Do you think it's also happening with others?
I'll be using the spoiler tag for our discussions.
@Pruzy
#LAL2019 #Buddyread #LifeAfterLife

CoffeeNBooks Interesting question! I hadn't thought about whether the things happening to Ursula are happening to anyone else. I don't think so, though. I think for whatever reason, she's different than others. I'm curious to keep reading to find out if, and why, she's different. 6y
cobwebmoth I'm enjoying it so far. I like the resets, because I feel like I learn something new each time. That's an interesting thought, that it could be happening to others. 6y
See All 21 Comments
Pruzy I had a moment when I was reading thinking it could be happening to everyone. It‘s like in our own lives when we have that moment when we think to ourselves we shouldn‘t do something because it will end badly...how do we know? Did we have our own Life After Life situation happening? How would we know? But I think that would imply we aren‘t clever enough to think it through ourselves, that we have to live through all the potential outcomes 😆 (edited) 6y
readordierachel Interesting thought @Pruzy ! Maybe as Ursula grows older she will have more control over it? Children do reckless things because they haven't learned yet. The opening scene seemed to imply that Ursula was making a choice to sacrifice her life. Maybe she becomes aware that she can come back? 6y
Ingerella @readordierachel That's one of the things I'm really looking forward to finding out. If she does become aware, it would be quite a power to have. 6y
squirrelbrain i also hadn‘t thought that it might be happening to others soon. It will be interesting to see if Ursula does become aware to see if she makes decisions based on knowing she can change her mind at another time. 6y
TheBookAddict I am enjoying this story. It is very intriguing. I definitely have to keep on reading until I find out what‘s going on. I want to know, why her? How is she able to “restart” her life? I do think that maybe there are others like her. Not everyone, but just a few, for some strange reason. From the opening scene I think she may be working with an organization to change the outcome of the war, which makes me think that maybe there‘s others like her. 6y
Meaw_catlady I am intrigued by the story so far. The fact that she had that deja vu ish moment makes me think that yes she will learn to control it . Like a superpower she can use it to her advantage. There‘s got to be some reason or point to her life being restarted over and over . Her destiny 6y
Ingerella @Meaw_catlady good point! I do think in the weeks to come fate and destiny will become a part of the discussions. 6y
Laura317 @Meaw_catlady I hadn‘t thought of that! 6y
daena Wow. What a great thought. I am for sure going to read the next section with that in mind. I am thoroughly enjoying the book. I was in a major reading rut for the past few weeks. This read pulled me out of it. I think it has a lot to do with the start and stop aspect. 6y
Dogearedcopy We might be looking at all the selected facets of one person's parallel universes (the idea that every decision leads to a different but very existentially real outcome,) an idea propounded by the physicist Hugh Everett. In which case, this is happening to everybody but we're just witnessing some of Ursula's fates. (edited) 6y
Pruzy @readordierachel Ooh, I like that idea! That would definitely take the concept of this novel to the next level. I just assumed she wasn‘t going to become consciously aware of what was going on, or if she was she would not be able to control it, but I like your idea more! 6y
Pruzy @TheBookAddict Wow! The potential for this book keeps sounding better and better! 6y
Pruzy @daena It does make the book into easily digestible chunks! 6y
Pruzy @Dogearedcopy Thats exactly the way I would look at the multiple universe theory for this book, if it is happening to one it is happening to all. 6y
Ingerella @CoffeeNBooks It's hard to wrap my brain around the idea of this happening to others, or everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing if this question is answered 6y
Ingerella @squirrelbrain I agree! @TheBookAddict I'd like to know why her as well. I was trying to pick up on something in her actions that might set her apart, but I don't think I've noticed anything in particular. 6y
Ingerella @daena I agree! I was a bit stalled on my other book but this one has given me a kickstart. I also think it's the format. It's intriguing and moves quickly. I love seeing what will be different in this next life. 6y
Ingerella @Dogearedcopy I love the idea of this theory. Although a little tough for me to grasp, I was also reading about the theory of eternal return. Interesting for sure! 6y

Pickpick

I just finished this book for the #LMPBC , #GroupK, and I'm not really sure what I think about it. It's wierd, and disturbing, but also intriguing. I'm not exactly sure how to categorize Geek Love, but somehow I'm glad I read it. I think I will give it a "pick" because no matter what I think of the story (undecided), the book is written beautifully. @Whimsical.Curiosity it will be on it's way to you tomorrow.
@leslieseidel @thebluestocking

readordierachel I felt the same way. 6y
