There is very little left original to say about Charles Bukowski.

The very essence of his poetry derives from his aims at chronicling nothing more than the impulse to make poetry. It‘s gestation made visible, the often awkward attempt to have something exist and exist uniquely.

Many of the stories in this collection are actually reworkings of stories from Dark Carnival. However, October Country is a more refined work than its predecessor: the revised stories are stronger, more mature, and more taut, and the later collection contains a lean nineteen stories, cut down from the twenty-seven originally published in Dark Carnival.

This was a somber, melancholic evocation of death and mortality. It also ended up being a beautiful homage to the French writer Jules Renard.

Couldn‘t decide what to read next, so I decided to re-read this. Didn‘t quite pack the same punch (what the hell ever does?) and I found it extremely hard to read now without seeing it as a prophecy in which everything came true except the liberation.

Just finished this wonderful memoir by Stephanie Land. A memoir that, as far as I‘m concerned, serves as a definitive argument that sometimes, a heavy-handed dose of Marxism is exactly what we need. It‘s hard to imagine a surer sign of this than this book.

Today we feature a short piece of fiction from Jory Pomeranz in a story about a disease which uses sentiment in order to perpetuate itself, which in turn, can sometimes force us to abandon our humanity altogether.
