“Here I am playing detective games, snooping among dead bodies, while there are genuinely important things to be done at home!”
I hope you all have as much fun as I am reading this novel!
Zofia is thoroughly enjoying her “snooping”, but the ingrained cultural and social expectations of women at the time creates internal conflict and a little sense of guilt.
Library hold came in, gotta move this one up the list! On my own tonight for dinner so sourdough with goat cheese and tomatoes, chardonnay, and my book! #dinnerandabook #ReadEurope2020 #France

Jumping in for #ReadEurope2020
That‘s Albania done for #readeurope2020 I‘ve never read anything about or from Albania before so I learned a lot! This was a tender but slightly mystified portrait of the authors mother, who he never entirely understood but loved a lot, and alongside it a lot of material on how Albanian twentieth century history affected his family. Short and well written, I recommend for anyone who needs an Albania book!

Had me thinking ‘this is why I love reading‘ every page. I already know it will be on my year end lists, this was a mindblowingly perfect novel. The story of a girl living a stifled life (‘senile childhood‘) in a boarding school in Switzerland, falling in love with another girl and not quite telling her, and thinking about her life. Every sentence dripped poetry, just perfect

Took me a while to get into this but when I did I loved it. Very individual style and phenomenal translation, telling the story of one woman‘s life from the 60s to the present day and also telling the story of France at the same time. Once I got through the (admittedly odd) first section I just flew through it, really recommend
