Letter I

Pared down, minimalist, glacial stories about love and especially its absence, madness, and loneliness. I know, here I go again ? At some point I'll try to think of a "happy" book.

A quote from one of Jaeggy's stories, translated from the Italian by Gini Alhadeff:

"Families are so strong. They have all of advertising on their side. But a person alone is nothing but a shipwreck."

Graywacke Another new to me. Noting! 2y
Lindy I‘m sold on the quote alone. 👍 2y
batsy @Graywacke I am really drawn to her style. I've got this one waiting for me 2y

batsy @Lindy It's something, isn't it? Every story has sentences that just make you sit up and stop for a bit. 2y
Lindy @batsy my favourite kind of writing 👍 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks ❤️❤️❤️ 2y
BarbaraBB This one is new to me too. Stacking of course! 2y
batsy @BarbaraBB The good thing is that they're really short short stories! A bit like poetry to be read bit by bit imo 🙂 2y

Jess_Read_This @batsy I just did a search on her as I hadn‘t heard of her until your quote. She sounds so intriguing! I‘ve added two of her books to my TBR! 7y

Flaneurette I've tried twice to read this and it seems like I should love it but I got annoyed with the cliched prose. I must be missing something- maybe I will give it another go! 7y
batsy @Flaneurette I do enjoy her prose! I also like this one a lot. But if you don't like both then maybe her style isn't quite your thing :) 7y
Flaneurette I will check it out! I do love her science and philosophy themes. Tbh I didn't get very far when I bailed. 😁 7y
merelybookish Wow! What a list! Some at the end are unfamiliar to me. But I love the name Fleur so that bodes well. 😊 7y

Pickpick

My first time reading Jaeggy. I'm enchanted & disturbed. She's a Swiss writer of Italian mother tongue; this was translated by Gini Alhadeff. It's a brief book of very short stories, some only two pages. No traditional sense of plot or character development. I would call her style gothic minimalism. Crystalline, laconic sentences. Death, theology, & the anxious claustrophobia of families. Love in its contorted form. Her stories will haunt me.

vivastory You had me at Gothic minimalism. Sold! 7y
RohitSawant Oo, this sounds fascinating! Stacked! 7y
saresmoore How do you make a review so beautiful? How? It's fine. You don't have to reveal your secrets. But I will read this book. Obviously. 7y

batsy @vivastory @rohit-sawant Ooh now I feel like I might have to undersell it a little 😅 l hope you enjoy it! 7y
batsy @saresmoore Haha 😆 I'm nervous about recommending this one because they're really brief vignettes of mood and atmosphere. But it's short and if you like the first story you might like the rest ☺️ 7y
shawnmooney What @saresmoore said! ❤️❤️ 7y
Tamra Sounds like I‘d enjoy this - TBR! 7y
batsy @Tamra It's strange and good! Her writing just does something to me. I hope you enjoy. 7y

Pungent, dark, acerbic stories from the formidable mind of Fleur Jaeggy. She has a way of zooming in on things one would rather not think about. (Translated from Italian by Gini Alhadeff.)

TrishB That's 💔 7y
batsy @TrishB Yeah. Whole book thus far is full of little moments of heartbreak. 7y
saresmoore Wow, lovely. I want to read this. 7y
batsy @saresmoore I'm almost done. It's very bleak, vignettes more than stories. Less plot and more atmosphere and mood, but beautiful writing in my opinion. 7y
