I really enjoyed this short novel set in Zimbabwe — the plot starts out relatively lighthearted and then amps up the stakes.
I have mixed feelings about the ending, which felt a bit abrupt and, in my opinion, wasn‘t fully satisfying in terms of consequences for one character‘s actions. Can‘t say anything else without getting into spoiler territory...

I really enjoyed this short novel set in 1990s Burundi. Though its plot is set against the war and genocide in neighboring Rwanda, Small Country uses its young narrator to balance the horror and tragedy with childhood adventure.

Black History Month is coming to a close. In today‘s political climate it‘s especially important to celebrate the many and varied contributions Black Americans have made to our country and our culture. What books did you read in honor of Black History Month?

Set in Indonesia, this short novel begins with a vicious murder and then unravels the events that led up to it — including how a young man became possessed by the spirit of a white tiger. I enjoyed it quite a bit, though the book summary stresses the tiger-possession element of the story more than the narrative bears out. It‘s much more about the young man‘s family and daily life in his small town.

Good morning! I made it to 10 hours last night before falling asleep, and this morning I‘m waking myself up with tea, scones, and One Out of Two. I‘m about halfway through this short novel and really enjoying it.
What are you reading for the second morning of #24in48?

I‘ve been reading a poem or two a day from this anthology, and just finished it yesterday. If you‘re looking to expand your literary horizons to poetry or go beyond the western classics, give this collection a shot.

• ...and THIS is why we need more diversity in literature...to expose this kind of blatant ignorance (racism) about other cultures. stupid Americans sometimes, I tell ya what. and I‘m saying that as an American. it‘s 2018–there‘s no excuse for this kind of behavior, in fiction or real life! 🤐😒🙄 •
