Discussion is now open for this month's selection, Escape Velocity. I have presented a few questions to get us started; however, you are welcome to discuss anything. Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the tag list.

@Larkken @Deblovestoread @bnp @Johanna414 @BookmarkTavern @julesG @sebrittainclark @BookBelle84 @Readergrrl @CSeydel @Roary47 @Lizpixie @AmandaBlaze @psalva @rretzler

TheSpineView 1. I thought there were too many POVs. I felt it diluted the story. 2. My favorite plot line was the murder mystery. I also think the story would have been much better if it had focused on that and no more than one subplot. 3. My biggest takeaway is not about the story per se, it is that this could have been two separate books. One about the murder mystery and the other about the class struggles. 1w

The_Literary_Jedi Multi POV would‘ve been better if there was less about social class; I was intrigued by the murder/mystery and wish it were the focus; I also think this would be better as 2 separate stories (edited) 1w
Ruthiella @The_Literary_Jedi @TheSpineView I agree that this could easily been two novels, one that focused on the murder mystery and one about the class division and unrest. It was too packed with ideas for any of them to really be dealt with satisfactorily. 1w
Ruthiella Annalee Newitz blurbed this book and I did think of her book The Terraformers, which we read last year, in how Manibo shows a gender queer friendly future. I appreciated this aspect of the book. (edited) 1w
TheSpineView @Ruthiella "Satisfactorily" Yes! This story left me with a feeling of want. 1w
Larkken Maybe the multiple povs would be ok if they weren‘t all so unlikeable 😆 1w
Larkken @Ruthiella @TheSpineView yes, a bit overpacked and I didn‘t fully connect with anything as a result 1w
kwmg40 I did not manage to read this book in time. I'm still waiting for a library copy, but based on the mixed reviews I'm seeing, I'm not sure if will get around to it. If someone says, “Yes, this is an absolute must-read“, then I will keep it on the TBR list. 1w
RamsFan1963 I didn't care for any of the characters, they all seemed so shallow and self service, I couldn't find myself rooting for any of them. There were a number of things that annoyed me about the book, I felt Ava being transgender was used as a gimmick and she was never filled developed as a character. I did get into the mystery of who killed Ava's brother (and why), but then the conclusion kind of made the whole mystery kind of a moot point. 1w
TheSpineView @RamsFan1963 I agree with you on the characters. They were rather two-dimensional. It was a gimmick. 1w

The votes are in, and the selection for November's #LSFBC #LitsySciFiBookClub is The Family Experiment by John Marrs. I read the blurb and it sounds interesting. Most of the reviews are favorable. I am looking forward to this book.

My library has both the ebook and the audio version. I looked on Amazon and the US price for the ebook is $14.99.

103/150 I was ready to give this a low pick, because I was invested in finding out what happened to Ava's brother back when they were in school, but then came the absolutely ridiculous ending that botched the whole book IMO. The author always seemed to be wanting to say more, but the book, like most of the characters, remained shallow and underdeveloped. 3 ⭐⭐⭐ #LitsySciFiBookClub

Ruthiella I agree with your take. I finished it today and I think he tried to get too much into one novel. But he also didn‘t pull punches in killing people off, which I appreciated. 2w
RamsFan1963 @Ruthiella Yes none of his characters were safe, and the author was creative in his kills. I'm glad we found out who killed the brother and why, even though the ending made it kind of anticlimactic 2w
Lesliereadsalot Not rushing to finish this one! 2w

#whereareyoumonday

This Monday finds me in outer space again with this month‘s #LitsySciFiBookclub pick. I am orbiting Earth in 2086 on a luxury space station (think a cruise ship turned up to 11). The guests are all there for a high school class reunion with all the emotions and drama that brings. Plus an unsolved murder, lower decks tension, a race for Mars… there‘s a lot going on!

Lesliereadsalot I‘ve gotta get to this one! 3w
BarbaraBB You‘re out of space again! (edited) 3w
Ruthiella @Lesliereadsalot It‘s very busy…not sure I‘m keeping it all straight. 3w
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I know! With reading at least two sci-fi books a month , it happens a lot. 😆 3w
BarbaraBB I had no idea you read that much SF. Cool! 3w

#weekendreads

This is what I have on tap this weekend. Hope to finish the Kushner, I‘m over halfway through. Escape Velocity is for #LitsySciFiBookclub . I might bail on The Heiress. So much heavy foreshadowing, which irks me. Sadly none are my #10beforethernd picks. 🙃

October is going fast! 😱 Only two weeks left; therefore, it is time to start thinking about what we want to read in November. Voting is now open to choose next month's selection. Please leave your nomination in the comments. I'll leave the nominations open through the weekend and we will vote next week. Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the tag list. @Larkken @Deblovestoread @bnp @Johanna414 @julesG

Light_of_Aether I'd like to be added to the tag list, please 3w

The_Literary_Jedi This is about two starships orbiting a black hole and the crews are killed because a “voice” from the black hole tells the killer to do it 3w
TheSpineView @Light_of_Aether You have been added. Hope you enjoy our group! Feel free to nominate a book for November. Please limit it to one book. With so many in this group the nominations can get out of hand if there is not a limit. The only other rule is the book must be a Sci-Fi book. It can be any sub genre, i.e. space opera, classic, etc. I will not accept nominations for fantasy, general fiction, poetry, memoirs, etc. You still have time to read... 3w
TheSpineView @Light_of_Aether ...October's selection. Open discussion usually occurs at the very end of the month. 3w
Ruthiella I‘ll vote from everyone else‘s nominations! 3w
BookmarkTavern This one‘s been on my TBR for a while! 3w
MaleficentBookDragon I‘ll second the nomination for 3w
Larkken Since I had down the wrong book as our selection this month I don‘t feel up to trusting Brain to come up with something suitable, so I‘ll also vote from everyone else‘s noms 😋 3w
Karisimo Just read a positive review for this novella 3w
DogMomIrene Ohhh, please add me to the tag list. I can‘t commit to the October read, but I second @AmandaBlaze nomination for 3w

This sci-fi/horror story is creepy and atmospheric but the plot dragged along and there wasn't much character development. It's too bad, as the sci-fi elements were interesting and had lots of potential for a great story.

Pickpick

The title here is Pilgrims by M.R. Leonard, his literary debut. I‘d call it speculative scifi & when i describe it it sounds ludicrous.

Earth is under oppressive martial law awaiting a coming alien invasion. 🛸👽

The aliens land. The aliens are devout Catholics.🧐

Sounds like satire. It is not.

Our main character is a Latin teacher that discovers studying Classics in college was a crackerjack major after all. 🤯

Ruthiella Sounds good. Maybe I will nominate it for the next #LitsySciFiBookClub pick. 🚀 1mo
