Rebecca | Daphne D Maurier

Bookwormjillk Jan is always being told she needs permission from the ladies in her life. Danny says she needs to ask to go into Rebecca‘s room. Bea says she must tell her the minute she‘s pregnant. Blah. 1mo

Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk Agree. But if she were to assert herself, they would back down. She‘s always assuming and never asserting. 1mo
Roary47 My heart broke a little for Jan here. How tough to be meeting an influential matriarch in your husband‘s family. Then be told “what did you do to Rebecca, I liked Rebecca, where is Rebecca?” 💔 (edited) 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 I‘m amazed at how many people are willing to say more or less the same thing to her! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks We are caretaking my grandma right now and I really related with a lot of Jan's thoughts in this chapter, about how strange it is when someone gets old, and wondering what they were really like when they were young and vibrant. 1mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Those passages really resonated with me as well. 1mo
julieclair I had a sick feeling in my stomach from the moment the grandmother seemed delighted that Jan had come to visit. I was worried she was thinking Jan was Rebecca. 💔 And poor Jan, she did nothing wrong, but her very presence caused the frail old lady major distress. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Can't believe I forgot to mention my favorite line - “I had an uneasy feeling we might be asked to spend the approaching Christmas with Beatrice. Perhaps I could have influenza.“ 😂 1mo
