There were a few aspects of the way this was written, terminology used by the characters that seemed odd for the time and the switching between perspectives, that sometimes distracted me from the experience of the story. However, the story itself of a woman raising her children on her own in the Australian bush and meeting an aboriginal man on the run was powerful. I was completely caught up in their stories and how those stories came together.

Daisey *I accessed this audiobook through the #Librofm Educator ALC program.

Tamra I‘m anxious to read this! Have you seen the film? I haven‘t yet. 6mo
Daisey @Tamra I haven‘t. I just happened to download it from Libro.fm and then realized it would be a great choice for an Australia book. I‘d like to say I‘ll look up the movie now, but I rarely actually get to a movie after reading the book. 6mo
Tamra @Daisey I‘m always looking for a good film or show to watch for the treadmill. 😂 6mo

This was told from many different points of view, including Suman, Anu, Varsha, and Hemant, so we got to see almost everyone‘s perspective of what was going on. Varsha became very possessive – she was very controlling (reminiscent of her father?); I initially felt badly for her, but came to quite dislike her. And the end? I liked it although many might not. I think this would make a good book club book with lots to discuss.

This is one of the most harrowing pieces on non-fiction I‘ve ever read. This book sheds light on the national emergency that is domestic abuse in Australia.
Throughly absorbing, comprehensive and informative, Jess Hill takes us though what abuse looks and feels like for both the victim and the perpetrator.
This was such a difficult but important read. I learned so much.

After watching the SBS docuseries with the same title I was drawn to read the book as well. It was such a powerful and revealing read. Giving a voice and so much more insight into the lives of domestic violence victims and their perpetrators. The book goes into detailed information about some very recent domestic violence cases that were in the news. A thought provoking, heartbreaking read.
