so-soThe banter between Winona and Lucille was entertaining but it couldn‘t make up for the rest of this Thelma and Louise inspired story. I‘m pretty sure this is my least favorite ending of a book I‘ve read this year. Like really, I made it the way to the end of this meh story for that ending -dang!
pickRebelling against a restrictive and rigid faith, mad support for the LGBTQ+, a girl inspired by art, and a literal musical triumph over the high school alt-right? What's not to love?! Sure, Hope's mom's turnaround in perspective felt a little too good to be true, and OK, I skipped most of the sci-fi story-within-a-story, but overall, so enjoyable. I can never resist self-discovery, good friends, and great music. #BooksAndBlooms

I haven't bought from Book Outlet in ages and I went a little crazy during their last sale...
this is the second YA Thelma and Louise retelling I‘ve read this year and again, it‘s fine. Winona and Lucille both have awful home lives so they run away and go on a mini crime spree to leave the Midwest and find one of their mom‘s who abandoned them years ago. Winona is annoying. implied one has a crush on the other and then dropped it for the rest of the book is kinda queer-baiting and annoying. anticlimactic at best. super rushed ending.
pickLoved it! After Hope‘s younger sister Charity outs their older sister Faith, their ultra-conservative Christian parents plan to send Faith to a conversion camp to “fix” her. Instead, Faith runs away. Nearly a year later, when a fellow classmate, Danny, is kicked out of his home and ostracized by his friends for coming out, Hope gives him a place to stay. Their friendship deepens and they form a punk band to counter all the hate in their community.

Short but interesting read on hope punk, novels that focus on hope and redemption. Hope is something we can all use a dose of now and then.
