Counting the Cost | Jill Duggar

Glad I read this. It‘s hard to read about what people have to go through because of the decisions made for them as children and not being protected by those who are supposed to love them the most.

I‘ve watched episodes of the show here and there, and watched the doc on Prime. Listening to this is so sad and infuriating…

My daughter‘s favourite book.
She‘s 33 today.
Not sure how that happened…
She‘s more hippie than I am ?
And loves Jane Austen not my Brontë

Love, Pamela | Pamela Anderson

This was a tough read, but also an inspiring one. Pamela put up with a lot…abuse, media slurs, unscrupulous people & some very outrageous men. Still, she persevered. She found much solace & courage in a variety of spiritual books. I had no idea she was such an avid reader or that she appeared on stage as Roxy in Chicago. Loved the stories about her sons & her empowering posse of friends.
Thanks @catiewithac for the gift of this moving memoir.🤗❤️

War That Saved My Life | Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Set in WWII England, this middle grade novel details Ada‘s escape from her abusive mother to join her brother Jamie as he is evacuated to the Kent countryside. She grapples with (forced) gratitude toward her new caretaker Susan, low self-esteem, and the knowledge that her mother does not love her, for she could have given Ada surgery to fix her clubfoot as a child and did not.

@Karisimo

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards This Newbery Honor book would be great for an upper elementary or middle school class to learn about WWII as well as what anxiety is like, as Ada often “goes away inside her head,” gets overwhelmed with crowds, and likes the comfort of being swaddled in a blanket when she panics. There's also a great sequel - The War I Finally Won! 7d
Daisey I agree; this was such a great book! I‘ve yet to read the sequel, but I just recently read another historical fiction by this author - 7d
Karisimo This one is a new classic! @daisey I have the night war in my queue right now! Thanks for sharing @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards 7d

despite having read quite a bit about residential schools, there were still a couple of surprising things (not good surprising). Of course, when he finished school, he had issues (the alcoholism), but it was good to see how he got himself better and is doing good to help others, as well. I thought this was really good.

Sickened | Julie Gregory

Pickpick

244 pages of oh my god, of horror. The author describes how her mother stole her innocence from her by deliberately making her sick. But, she continued to do this to the other children she fostered as well. Julie describes a house constantly full of gaslighting, abuse—both mental and physical. After years of suffering, she discovered there was a name for what her mother did to her, via a psych class. Processing this might have been worse⬇️

JenniferEgnor than all those years of endless doctor visits. When she confronts her mother, she responds by gaslighting her. Julie was determined to stop her from destroying another child‘s life. I hope she was successful. 1w

"They were planning your downfall from the very start."

I'm halfway through the audiobook and have audibly yelled in my car. This is step by step my experience with my ex. I may need to start this over to fully absorb the lessons.
