I wasn't blown away by this, but it may have been more me than the book. I had to read most of it while my partner was in the hospital for a procedure; constant interruptions and distractions (he's doing well, BTW). I almost wish I could re-read it while curled up in a chair. I enjoyed the relationships among the writers and the look at the plight of "surplus" women in the period between the world wars.

I'm just starting this one. Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, Baroness Emma Orczy, and Margery Allingham all band together to solve a real murder to prove that they're equal to, or better than, the authors in the "boys' club" who don't accept them. So far, good character development and lots of 1930s period charm. Reading for a book discussion later this week.

Marie Benedict is an auto-buy author for me. This one wasn't my favorite of hers, but I think it would hit it out of the park for readers of mysteries like Agatha Christie, who is one of the characters in this book. I like how it is based on a real cold case. The feminist angles appeal to me as much as the treatment of women as disposable angers me.

A thing happened over the weekend. My birthday! 🥳 My #Litsypenpal @Beck9lol did it again and spoiled me with all the books! 🎁 I‘m sipping out of the Plant Lady mug (shaped like a ceramic pot 🥹) and equipped with a shovel spoon!! It doesn‘t get any better than this and relieved I finally snagged a couple of days off to enjoy all of these wonderful gifts. Thanks so much Becky. My heart is full! Hope everyone‘s weekend is filled with great reads!📚

This is a mystery set in 1931 and features 5 real female mystery writers as characters, including Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, who narrates the story. When the group are dismissed as not up to snuff at a detective writers club for simply being female, they decide to solve a real mystery. This was a fun story, and I really enjoyed it, as will I think anyone who loves the classic mysteries of that era. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. 4/5

TiredLibrarian Glad you liked it! I'm reading this with a book group in April. 2mo

TiredLibrarian Reading this with a book group next month. Glad you liked it! 2mo
Reecaspieces @TiredLibrarian it is a bit different but I loved the characters! It reads like an Agatha novel. So it can be a bit slow. But I loved the change of pace for me. 2mo

How can a lady‘s detective group prove that they are as good as a group of male detectives?

In the year 1931 women were deemed not as capable as men.

Read for #AuthorAMonth #DorothySayers this was my first experience with Lord Peter Wimsey & first Sayers book. I listened to this one on audio & mostly in the car running errands & found it entertaining overall, more impressive that it was her first novel. It‘s dated, at times racist & classist but I liked the main character & supporting characters & might pick up another in the series at some point.⬇️

DebinHawaii I don‘t know if the audiobook aided or lowered my soft pick rating (it was fine, not outstanding) so I may try another in print. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo

charl08 For my money they definitely get better as she developed the characters in the series (but I am probably biased!) 2mo
DebinHawaii @charl08 Good to know! I‘ll try another. 2mo
