King: A Life | Jonathan Eig

Pickpick

19-23 May 24 (audiobook)
A thorough, well-written history highlighting King‘s brilliance, charisma and frailty. I was shocked by the blatant police brutality and violence he and the non-violent civil rights marchers faced from people in public office in the south. King himself is flawed and clearly reluctant to take on the role he was given. The roles played by the Kennedys (surprisingly), LBJ, and Hoover and his FBI were also rather appalling.

I mean, what do you say about what is arguably THE most famous speech in history? I appreciated Gorman's perspective provided in the forward, the significance to her and the role it played in her poetry reading. I feel like there's a point of view gained by reading the actual content of the speech that you cannot have just knowing that it exists and what it is about. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I haven't looked into the art of speech making any more than studying a bit of ancient Greek rhetoric and philosophy years ago would provide, but I feel like the balance between poeticism in phrasing, moments that are powerful and eminently quotable, alongside elucidating the core purpose that you wish to communicate, make for a great speech, and it's obvious this is a prime example of that balance. 2w
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 Is it a little depressing reading it in 2024 and recognizing the dream isn't yet realized? Yes. But King spoke to galvanize people into making change, and in that sense, the speech is still as useful and powerful as it ever was. 2w
Suet624 I think everyone should read that speech. 2w
Robotswithpersonality @suet624 AGREED! 👏🏻 2w

A YA book so I‘m obviously not the intended audience which shows in my rating (3 ⭐️). It was very readable, accessible, engaging and I imagine quite informative/eye opening and relevant to younger readers. I think for its audience it‘s a great read. #readyourkindle

CBee One more off the Kindle TBR 👏🏻👏🏻 2mo
kspenmoll This book is a favorite with my 9th graders who are reading it now for book club groups. 2mo

I adore good narrative nonfiction, so picking only 3 is very difficult! So I‘m going to cheat. 😀

1. Tagged
2. “And the Band Played On”
3. “My Own Country: A Doctor‘s Story”
4. “The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl”
5. “Eleni”

@dabbe #ThreeListThursday

TheBookHippie Oh #2 for sure!!! 3mo
AmyG #2 is a great book! Forgot about that one. 3mo

This was a re-read for me, prompted by its inclusion on the #AuldLangSpine list I got from @Amiable. I couldn‘t quite get it finished in January! When I read this the first time, even though I knew what would happen, I found myself hoping things would turn out differently on that Memphis balcony. I felt the same again. This is one of the best nonfiction books I‘ve ever read.⬇️

MallenNC Side note: I‘ve visited the Lorraine Motel, which is now a civil rights museum and highly recommend it. The room is just as Dr. King left it, which is very moving. 4mo
Amiable Such an amazing read! I‘m still thinking about it several months later. 4mo

'We are simply seeking to bring into full realization the American dream--a dream yet unfulfilled. A dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed; a dream of a land where men no longer argue that the color of a man's skin determines the content of his character... ⬇️

When it is realized, the jangling discords of our nation will be transformed into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood, and men everywhere will know that America is truly the land of the free and the home of the brave.' 🔚 (edited) 4mo

@Andrew65

My favorite Cotton Malone book to date!

May was a good reading month for me.
Other high points for the month were:
The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis
Notorious RBG : The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Andrew65 Snap! I also loved The Masterpiece. 5mo

My #May book for #12BooksFor2023 is The Bishop‘s Pawn. An excellent Cotton Malone thriller centred around what happened in Martin Luther King‘s final days. Always love Cotton Malone books but this is one of the very best and learned a lot about Martin Luther King in this book. This reads exceptionally well as a standalone even though it is a book in a series.

kspenmoll Stacked! Sounds great! 5mo
Andrew65 @kspenmoll Definitely a very enjoyable read. 5mo
Mollyanna Cotton is my book boyfriend. I love these books, can‘t wait to get to this one! 5mo

Andrew65 @Mollyanna He is a wonderful character. If you‘ve not read them you might also be interested in the Ben Hope series by Scott Mariani. If I was in trouble I‘d want Cotton and Ben on my side. 5mo
Mollyanna @Andrew65 I‘ll have to check it out. Looks like Hoopla has the first one…. ‘Cuz I need another series, but if Ben is like Cotton I‘m in. 5mo
Andrew65 @Mollyanna 😂 One of my favourite series. Will be interested to hear what you think if you read it. 5mo
Bluebird This was my May pick too. It‘s also my favorite of the series! 5mo
