Good news! Brad Meltzer posted this morning on Facebook that the York, PA school board has ended their racist ban. So sad that this even ever happened.

wanderinglynn Yay! 🎉 3y
julesG Yessss! But I agree, it's very sad that this happened. It's 2021 for crying out loud. Shouldn't we be taking steps to move forwards rather than backwards? 3y
mandarchy @julesG I often think the same thing about the 21st century. Change is frustratingly slow. The student's victory here is evidence that we are moving in the right direction. We cannot stop doing the work. We cannot get tired or give up. 3y

Brad Meltzer has two books on CYSD's 4 page list of articles, books and resources they are currently banning. I love that he is supporting my friend JJ's initiative! They have received more than 100 boxes of book donations in the last 5 days!

Librariana I will never... EVER... understand/grasp/condone the concept of restricting access to information/stories/ideas simply because there's something an individual finds offensive or doesn't agree with or who KNOWS what other ridiculous justification they might provide for their ignorance and lack of tolerance. A library should have something in it to AFFIRM everyone! 3y
Read-y_Picker This is infuriating. 3y
SamAnne So infuriating. 3y
EclecticBookLover Did you see the news? The board reversed their decision! 3y

I just love these books and this was no exception. Great story telling for kids. The new PBS Kids show “Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum” does just as great a job with these stories! 🤦🏼‍♀️

What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.

Took this photo at Yerba Buena Gardens during my trip to San Francisco last November. They have a great MLK memorial.

Martin Luther King Jr. by Bonnie Bader, biography. Martin Luther King Jr. helped organized black people across the country so they would be able to vote and have other basic rights. Martin remained calm and honest even though was being threatened. This book is really to the point. I like how this book focuses on just the main idea of Martin Luther. This book would be a great IR or PR

Jenniferj11419 UDL 1.1 offer ways of customizing information. This book lays out the information about Martin Luther in a very organized and visual way for elementary readers. UDL 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols. During the time of this book, there is a lot of history and vocabulary and symbols will be unknown to some students. ESOL 10 strategy think, pair, share in cooperative groups. 7y
Jenniferj11419 Excellent for this book. What do you think about the way Martin Luther Jr is being treated? Is it fair? Does this book give a good sense of what happened in history? ESOL strategy 28 Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries. Very important for our students who come from different countries to see that we also have important historical events and people. 7y
SadiqaH This book reminds me of Martin's big words the life of Dr. Martin King Jr. I like Biographies because they always have great lessons. 7y
devin.s I love Martin Luther King Jr! He is so inspirational and I can‘t wait to use materials like this in my classroom. 7y

I've shared this book before, but it!s a good day to share it again. It covers MLK's childhood, the bus protests after Rosa Parks, MLK in jail, Selma and more. This page introduces the Children's March. Meltzer thanks Rep John Lewis for reviewing early drafts. Children and adults will learn from this book.

#ReadJanuary #Day16 #InspiredByMartinLutherKingJr I LOVE these books from Brad Meltzer. My son has the whole collection (minus Jim Henson because that just came out). All of these books-this one in particular-encourages the readers to stand up for what is right, to stand together for justice, and to remain united in times of trouble. Beautiful.

These are two of the books I bought from Brazos Bookstore after they were robbed. I told them they were for my daughter's birthday, and they wrapped them and sent these adorable kid-designed bookmarks. She was so excited!

Texreader Someone robbed a bookstore?!?? Oh my. Hope a life sentence was in order. That's just awful 8y
BookishClaire Ooh, these look great! My goddaughter is about to turn 5 - though she doesn't read yet because she's under a different country's school system. Do you think they'd be appropriate? 8y
she_barks @BookishClaire yes, as long as she has someone to read them to her. The reading level is probably more like 2nd grade, but the illustrations are fun and the stories would appeal to her age. We started with Rosa Parks and Amelia Aerhart. 8y
