squirrelbrain I‘ve read Crossroads, To Paradise and Oh William. I have Things They Lost, borrowed from the library. What did you think of the Holleran? I really want to read it, but I think it might have to be on Audible as that‘s the only way I can get hold of it at the moment. @bookwormm 2y

CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen Yes 😃 I have!!! It‘s a book by Katherine Heiny 😉 so #blameitonCindy!! The one you had tagged is pretty expensive in Germany so I‘ll wait till it comes down in price. But I found an earlier book, Standard Deviation, and am totally enjoying it 🙌🏼 I tend to get so dramatic on Jan 1st, I want to vision board, start the year with an inspirational book, pray and meditate… 3y

CoffeeAndABook ⬆️… none of this ever happens, of course. my siblings both have their birthdays on Dec 31st and Jan 2nd so I end up traveling back and forth instead of quietly slipping into the new year 😂 and the book I found is pretty funny and entertaining - so perfect 👌🏼 also I always enjoy NYC as a setting 🏙😜 3y

Shulem Deen was a member of the Skverers, one of the most Hasidic sects in the US. His religion taught him that questions were not permitted and that he should #layallyourloveonme (me being his faith ✡️... stick with me here). But after being married and having 5 children he beings to question his religious beliefs and is shunned from his community as a heretic. I‘m 60 pages into this memoir and I‘m hooked!!

Insightsintobooks ...being able to question is one thing I Love about Judaism. The sages having questions is all over the Talmud. Sad that he was thrown out of his community for something that should be encouraged. I haven't read this, but it is on my TBR. 6y

Cinfhen @Insightsintobooks you have to read this book! Unfortunately , It‘s NOT surprising how his community reacts. In their eyes his actions are transgressions. It made me sooooo mad 😡😡 6y

emilyhaldi @Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen Have you seen the Netflix documentary One Of Us?? It follows 3 people who have decided to leave the Hasidic community and the retaliation is shocking. They are threatened, harassed, etc. Its a very interesting doc if you‘re interested. 6y

Cinfhen My hubby watched @emilyhaldi @Insightsintobooks he said it was pretty horrifying. It‘s sad how extreme some people take their religious beliefs and turn it into something else completely. I‘m pretty sure God never intended for any of this militant approach to religion. 6y
