Come: A memoir | Rita Therese
post image
Mehso-so

Therese has split her story into three broad sections: Sex, Love, and Death (which, in itself, should give you a pretty good indication of the tone of the book). She takes a really admirable warts-and-all approach to sharing her story. This is one for fans of Kate Holden‘s In My Skin, or Belle de Jour‘s Intimate Adventures Of A London Call Girl. Boy Swallows Universe | Trent Dalton

Pickpick

Captivating throughout. Australian poverty, drugs, prison, literature, mystery, addressing big questions like “What makes a good man?” And a splash of fantasy (although I don‘t think fantasy is a good enough descriptor).... all set in my neighbouring suburbs so very familiar. I‘ll be recommending this one to everyone and reading Dalton‘s newspaper columns.

Blaire Where in Australia? My uncle lives in Melbourne. Going to recommend this to him. 6y

That Christmas Feeling | Lili Wilkinson, Amanda Francey

Pickpick

Today's kids christmas book is That Christmas Feeling by Lili Wilkinson and Amanda Francey - this is a beautiful book about a little girl called Dottie who is staying with her grandparents and having trouble finding her Christmas sparkle without her mum and dad. This is the perfect read for kids whose christmas is a bit different than usual this year (don't worry - it has a very happy ending! 😜) 📚🎄💕

So many of my students have loved this series. Australia is invaded, the parents are interned in camps, and a bunch of teenagers are thrust into adulthood as they are left to fight back - what's not to like? #fullofadventure #booktober #YA #YAlit #Aussiebooks #Australianlit

BethFishReads Love love loved this series. Have read/listened a couple of time thru the years 8y
EnidBiteEm @BethFishReads The issues are timeless, aren't they? Even if the technology (or lack of) is dated... 8y
BethFishReads Yes. And Marsden really nails the older teen sensibility. 8y

EnidBiteEm @BethFishReads I think he has a strong understanding of the early autonomy that is developed in rural kids ... and Ellie's voice is so clear 😀 8y
BethFishReads Yes. I agree. Also, I suppose being a teacher has given him insight & familiarity 8y
IncredibleRamblingElimy Loved those books! I met John Marsden at a writer's fest and almost cried because he is such a legend. 8y
EnidBiteEm @BethFishReads true 😀 @IncrediblyRamblingElimy 😀 I've been lucky to hear him talk a few times. I would have loved to have visited Candlebark (the school he set up). 8y
BethFishReads Lockyer you! 8y

EnidBiteEm @Marchpane @Trav Don't they have such adorable names? 😍 8y
EnidBiteEm @LeahBergen Are you an Aussie? I'm not sure they made it very far afield. When The Gumnut Babies was first published, there weren't really any Australian publishing houses, and what books were sold were decided upon by British booksellers (who often saw us as a convict backwater). 8y
Trav I love them! I am an Aussie though so I absolutely adore them. 8y
LeahBergen I'm Canadian but haven't come across them here (and I would have loved them, I'm sure!) 8y
EnidBiteEm @Trav lucky us for knowing May Gibbs. @LeahBergen hooray for the net! 8y
EnidBiteEm Oh yeah ... and @Litsy 😂 8y
