Boy, was it a bit chilly this morning! When I went to walk, it was technically 40°, which I can do with a light jacket; however, the “feels like” temp was 29°, so I had to layer a bit AND wear a jacket and a hat. The characters in this book are just making me so sad for them all. #audiowalk

Totally insane, with a perfectly unsatisfying ending

I‘m enjoying this book, but I sometimes get a little lost for a minute with the jumps in time. We are supposed to get a lot of rain tomorrow and then snow, so I‘m trying to get in my #audiowalk while I can!

Bookwormjillk Snow? Haven‘t I seen alligators in your pictures before? Good luck with that! 2d
KathyWheeler @Bookwormjillk Yes — you‘ve definitely seen alligators in my pics before. Snow is extremely unusual down here. It was 70° F today but is supposed to get down into the 20s. 1d
Bookwormjillk @KathyWheeler yikes! Those two things shouldn‘t go together! 21h
KathyWheeler @Bookwormjillk no, they should not! 5h

A magnificent book and a remarkable human. If only stories like this were mandatory reading.

Bailedbailed

SUCH an annoying bunch of people who keep ignoring their telephones and keep making stupid, hysterical decisions. All because of the kidnapping of their father decades earlier? I don‘t even want to know. I feel as irritated as I did when reading Fleishman. Although I managed to finish that one.
Note to self: ignore future works by this author!!

#ToB25Longlist

TheBookHippie I felt exactly the same. Bamboozled. 5d
ShyBookOwl 😅 5d
Ruthiella It‘s a relief for me to know there‘s an author I can skip because we aren‘t ever going to get along. It makes that enormous pile of potential titles just a little bit smaller. 5d

squirrelbrain At least you tried! 😬 5d
BarbaraBB @TheBookHippie Glad to know that!! 4d
TheBookHippie @BarbaraBB if we both don‘t like it 🫣😵‍💫🤪 that says A LOT 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣♥️ 4d
BarbaraBB @TheBookHippie Definitely! 4d
Magpiegem I felt like this about her last book 😂 4d
Reggie Nooooooo don‘t say that. I bought this the other day. But I did like her other book. So there‘s that. 4d
BarbaraBB @Magpiegem You mean Fleishman? I hated that one too. And It‘s practically the same. Rich people nagging 😩 4d
BarbaraBB @Reggie Then you‘ll probably like this one. It‘s basically the same book 🤣 4d
Magpiegem @BarbaraBB yes! I had really high hopes for it, but I was so glad when it was over 😂 4d
CarolynM I didn‘t hate Fleishman but I didn‘t like it enough to want to read anything else she might write 😆 4d
sarahbarnes Oh boy - I have this one on hold right now. I haven‘t read Fleishman but this doesn‘t make me want to read this one… 4d
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I am not very subtle and many people like it but I‘d say forget about it. So many better books out there! 3d

So Much to Tell You | John Marsden

Pickpick

I‘m processing my sadness over the passing of John Marsden by revisiting his brilliant books, starting with his debut.

I remember my grade 5 teacher reading this to the class and I‘ve read it several times since. Even though I know what happens I‘m still completely absorbed.

I‘ve gotten something a little different from it each time.

Butterfinger I don't think I know him. I have to look him up. I bet you feel the same way I did when Gary Paulsen died. 1w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Butterfinger, he‘s best known for the Tomorrow, When The War Began series. I‘m not sure if he‘s super well known outside of Australia beyond that. He was a brilliant storyteller (mostly writing MG & YA but he branched into adult fiction and NF in more recent years) and passionate educator - he founded his own primary school in regional Victoria. (edited) 1w
Butterfinger No, I have read him. The group of teens who were in the Outback when their town was taken. Yes, I read the first one for a challenge and continued the season 1w

Butterfinger The series. It was so good. 1w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Butterfinger, not the outback but you are thinking of the right series. I read them as a teen and just flew through them. There‘s a follow up trilogy called The Ellie Chronicles which was also excellent. (edited) 1w
willaful his most memorable for me. 1w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @willaful, that one is on my tbr stack! I‘m sure I‘ve read but it‘s been awhile! 1w
Rissreadswithcats Let me know when you are going to read I can‘t remember if I‘ve read it or not. 1w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Rissreadswithcats, I‘ve got the ebook so I‘m ready at any time… do you have a copy? 1w
Rissreadswithcats I have one in my school library and I‘m back on the 23rd. Ok to wait until then? 1w

I see why this book had so much buzz and hit a lot of favorites list in 2024. If you pick it up and think it‘s too long for me (almost 600 pages) just know that it‘s a fast read with short chapters and worth every.single.page. It‘s a mystery, but so much more. It‘s really about friendship that turns into family and what you will do to help someone you love.

Tamra I got it on Kindle which isn‘t my favorite format, so this is good to know! 2w
AmyG Such a wonderful book. Agree….it‘s big but I flew through it. 2w
CoverToCoverGirl I just finished this one. I know it‘s early but it‘s going to be my number one pick for 2025. It‘s brilliant! 1w

#weeklyforecast 02/25

After the fabulous Intermezzo I like to stay in Ireland a bit longer and am starting the third John Boyne in his Elements series. It‘s supposed to be very dark but I‘m sure I‘ll love it. It‘s short so I‘ll soon start the tagged book too, which is another from the #ToB25Longlist.
I kind of hated Fleishman so my hopes are not too high!

Leftcoastzen I kinda hated Fleishman too ! I did like the TV adaptation though . Curious what you think of her new one. Haven‘t even started elements series yet. 2w
BarbaraBB @Leftcoastzen Glad I am not the only one! Hopefully this is less about complaining rich people 😊. The Elements series is fantastic, you should give them a try 🤍 2w
suvata I finished the first book in the element series. I can‘t wait to read the other three I‘m a huge John Boyne fan. 2w

AmyG I am curious what you think of LI Compromise. 2w
squirrelbrain I‘m afraid it *is* about complaining rich people. 😬 I liked Fleishman, but this was much better. 2w
BarbaraBB @suvata yeah me too. He never disappoints 2w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain 😱😱 oh well, if you say it‘s better than Fleishman 😉 2w
BarbaraBB @AmyG Have you read it yet? 2w
AmyG @BarbaraBB No. I have only read Fleishman….which I found good, not great. 2w

This is really far out of my usual wheelhouse, but my spiritual director recommended it, and a good friend has talked with me a lot about the polyvagal work she‘s doing with her therapist, so it intrigued me. It turned out to be a helpful read for me—there‘s a LOT that made sense and gave me better insight into my stress responses. The book is probably 40-50% info, and 50-60% exercises—what she calls “explorations.” The info parts required ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …close attention for me, and that combined with the explorations meant it took me a while to work through the material. Some of the explorations flat-out did not resonate with me, but others were really helpful. Honestly, a lot of this felt like a slog to read, but given the number of page flags I added to mark sections I‘d like to return to… I think I should give it a pick! This was my November #DoubleSpin. @TheAromaofBooks 3w
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3w
MommyWantsToReadHerBook This sounds really interesting! 3w
BarbaraJean @MommyWantsToReadHerBook It really was insightful for me—helpful to look at the “fight or flight” and shutdown type reactions that are really common for me under stress as biological rather than purely emotional. 3w
