‘An innocent young girl... a noble youth obsessed with her beauty... and a mother who will do anything to keep them apart...‘

This was an excellent version of Rapunzel. Highly recommend to fairytale lovers.

The Trees: A Novel | Percival Everett

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a hard book to review only because nothing I could say could truly convey how utterly brilliant it is. The (rightful) rage the author feels is palpable. The story, though, seems almost light-hearted and ridiculous. And somehow it works beautifully. Just a stunning book all around. And the cover, that seemed so simple when I picked it up, had me in tears towards the end of the story. Definitely the best book I've read this year.

Ruthiella I think this is his masterpiece (so far). I appreciated James and am glad he‘s now getting well deserved attention as an author, but this one blew my socks off. 2w
Traci1 @Ruthiella I've not read James, yet, but it's on my tbr. I can't imagine it surpassing this one, though. 2w

I enjoyed this compilation of short works by Irving. The nonfiction bits were my favorites, oddly, especially the title piece and the Dickens pieces. The “author‘s notes” to the last selection, where he talks about meeting Thomas Mann‘s daughter on an airplane is also great. #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

Megabooks I want to read more by him. #stacked 1mo

Lcsmcat @Megabooks My favorite (so far) is Prayer for Owen Meany, but I have liked everything of his that I‘ve read. 1mo

I started rereading NOTORIOUS SORCERER this afternoon ahead of the third book in the series, and I‘m shocked it doesn‘t have more Litsy love. This is great stuff, people! Grab it if you want a queer fantasy with excellent characters, inventive magic, and tons of genuinely interesting politicking.

I shall read more while I drink this mead, about which I have too many comments for Litsy‘s character limit.

xicanti OKAY. Let‘s talk about how the mead starts off gloriously sour, as so many honey-based alcohols do, then settles into a velvety mouthfeel that more suggests than offers sweetness, then finishes off with an acidic tang reminiscent of grape wine. It‘s good stuff. PLUS, you TOTALLY feel like a Viking when you drink it! VALHALLA, I AM COMING! 1mo
Kenyazero I do want all of those things 🤩 1mo
xicanti @BookmarkTavern @Kenyazero excellent choice, both of you! 1mo

I finished The Starless Sea for the third time this morning. Sometimes I need the comfort of a favorite reread. And this is a book that begs to be read over and over. I would crawl into this world if I could. I would open a painted door. 🐝 🔑 🗡️💛

MeganAnn This on my list to reread in December. I would love to open a door and live in this world too! 1mo

Just Like Home | Sarah Gailey

In the wake of finishing Gailey‘s “Just Like Home,” I, like Vera (the MC) am brought right back to my (early 90‘s) childhood. The lyrics from one of Ferngully‘s undeniably catchy jams wormed their way right into my brain:

“Oil and grime, poison sludge,
diesel clouds & noxious muck.
Slime beneath me, slime up above,
…Ah-ah-ah…
Toxic love.”

I can‘t say it better than Tim Curry! Toxic love is at the heart(h) of this tragic & intimate horror novel.

Although fantasy is not my cup of tea, this book comes highly recommended and I enjoyed the story of three sisters who go missing as children only to return a month later with no memory of where they'd been. A decade later, the eldest sister goes missing again and it's up to the other two to uncover the secrets of their past. Totally entertaining.

Enemies to Lovers | Responsible vs Rogue | LGBTQIA+

Marske crafts a beautiful slow-burn romance in an engaging low-fantasy world. Loved the normalized LGBTQIA+ rep, POC protagonist, and focus on workers' rights. Perfect blend of tender moments, thrills, and passion!
