The Unquiet Dead: A Novel | Ausma Zehanat Khan
post image
Pickpick

This was the second book in as many months that I've read that dealt with a war in Eastern Europe with which I am shamefully ill-informed. The detective team is terrific and I appreciated how Khan provided resolution without tying everything up in a too neat bow. Well done detective fiction is my kryptonite - I must get my hands on the rest of this series. Full review on Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25663952?source=ebfg_email

DGRachel Also, this is #11 for Mount TBR, #litsyatoz (title) Letter U, and #LRC3-written by woman of color @BookishMarginalia @Jessica 7y
Well-ReadNeck Glad you posted. This one has moved up my TBR and now is on my nightstand!! 7y
DGRachel @Well-ReadNeck I "one more chapter"-ed my way through the last 90 pages and an hour past my bedtime because I just couldn't put it down. I hope you enjoy it, too! 7y
Blaire This sounds perfect for me! 7y

I struggled with this book; it took me nearly two months to finish it. No resolutions at the end. Still, I enjoyed Smith's writing and will give her another try.

This book! THIS BOOK! I can't deal with how good it was, I am completely mind blown. I love the language, the characters, setting and story. So important, hard and amazing.

If you haven't read it yet, run to your nearest bookstore and get it! 🏃‍♀️👏

suvata Beautiful cover. 8y
Sace I loved this book. Your cover is so much prettier than the cover on my copy. Cover envy. 8y
Merethebookgal @Sace I was thinking the same thing! 😁 8y

Centique I think I'm going to pick this for book club when it's my turn. I have real trouble finding a book with POC protagonists that they like. (Probably because we like very different books) Is this quite realistic and linear? 8y
Kalalalatja @suvata @Sace @Merethebookgal thank you, it is the very wonderful UK edition 👌 8y
Kalalalatja @Centique the story in itself is very linear, but the chapters do have some flashbacks. It is realistic, but there is some talk about spirits and dreams, but it doesn't move completely into magical realism 😊 8y
Centique Thanks @Kalalalatja I think that will work nicely! 8y
JazzFeathers It sounds very interesting. Never read this author. Into my TBR list it goes ^_^ 8y

This is required reading! A timely look at racism and the Black Lives Matter movement, this book is not afraid to explore society's problems. I learned a lot, but I also enjoyed stepping into Starr's world and seeing her family and friends. This book has moments that are hard to read, but it is also filled with humor, heart, and hope. Pick it up. #LRC3 #womanofcolorauthor

I have finally finished a print book for the first time in days! Yay. This is the 2nd book in The Broken Earth trilogy & whilst not quite as compelling as the 1st, it was still a great read. Can't wait for the 3rd book which will be here in May I think. This is my J book for #LitsyAtoZ & my #womanofcolorauthor #LRC3 For my #LitsyReadingChallenge On to the next! Hopefully?!

Lindy Glad to hear you are back into your reading groove. 👍 8y

Cinfhen Thanks so much @TrishB @KarenUK @kspenmoll @Lmstraubie @LauraBeth I've been basing my reading choices on the boxes, which is kind of ridiculous but I've read some really good books 😊 (edited) 8y
Cinfhen Appreciate the encouragement @lynneamch @saresmoore @CocoReads I've sort of neglected the other challenges but it's only March so I still have plenty of time 😍💜☺️ 8y
CocoReads @Cinfhen that's what I'm doing. I'm pretty much only focusing on one at a time, if something I read fors more than one, that's fine but I can really only concentrate on one at a time. 8y
Cinfhen Exactly @CocoReads we have 10 months to fill the other challenges and I've found plenty of cross overs!!! 8y
Reviewsbylola Great job 👏👏 8y
LeahBergen Oooo, you're doing good! I should check out how mine is looking (I've been writing the titles down but haven't done my card). 8y
Cinfhen @LeahBergen it's fun to see those boxes fill up 😀 8y

If you want a story without the despair and agony of loss, do not read this book. If you want to read a story with mothers/fathers/daughters/strangers' struggle towards hope while dealing with past and present prejudices, read this amazing book. #lrc3 #WrittenByAWomanOfColor

The world building and creativity of N.K. Jemisin' stories is amazing! This book describes a horrible but fascinating world with truly interesting and diverse characters. From the beginning I was intrigued by the different perspectives and enjoyed figuring out how they connected. As I read the last page I was also thankful I'd already put in a hold request for the sequel.

Reading this was long overdue. I'm not sure how I've gotten this far in life and never read The Color Purple. If you're like me, I suggest you read it. I've never encountered anything so heart wrenching and at the same time uplifting. Such incredible characters here. #litsyreadingchallenge #LRC3 #readharder2017

I'm hopeful that this thought from Mary Jackson remains true! This is just one of many passages I highlighted, because the book is filled with great information. So much more detail than the movie, which I also enjoyed. This is one case where I'm glad I saw the movie first. The movie is definitely historical fiction. The book does a great job of highlighting each of the African-American women's achievements.
