Interesting! Terrible covers, but interesting.
I've loved Joan Aiken since I read Arabel's Raven when I was six or so. I've read the Arabel & Mortimer books and the Wolves of Willoughby Chase series, but I've never read any of her adult novels, though I own both Jane Fairfax and Eliza's Daughters, sequels to Austen's S&S and MP

A bit of a let down after a good start. I found Jane to be a bit of a snooze by the end and didn‘t love seeing her snobbery about all of our friends in Highbury. Say what you will about Emma, at least she is never boring!

I also really wish that Aiken could have varied her descriptions a bit. She reduced characters, who are so alive in Austen‘s novel, to their most obvious character trait, i.e. Knightly=Gallant, Harriet=Simple etc…
#PemberLittens

batsy Great review. Those aspects made this a so-so for me, as well. 3y
mklong Thanks @Batsy! I think you made a really important point in your review that Aiken seemed boxed in by the existing characters. I think it was in her effort to keep them true to the original, that she ended up reducing them. 3y

I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the first part, especially the Weymouth chapters, and how Aiken fleshed out Jane's past. I even found the secret engagement believable: although it was foolish, I think we all have our share of stupid decisions made when nursing a broken heart.
The second part, when we enter the world known from Emma, disappointed me. It felt rushed, and I don't think anything of value was added to the story. And ⬇️

eeclayton And I'm still not convinced that Frank is a suitable partner for Jane.
It also bugged me that most of the time, it felt like Jane was a supporting character in her own book. Even in the first part, Rachel and her conflicts were much more interesting while Jane went through very little development.
#pemberlittens
3y
TheAromaofBooks I didn't like the way Aiken decided to basically make it sound like Jane “settled“ by marrying Frank, instead of allowing Jane's character to fully embrace & love Frank. When they were in Weymouth, we had times where Jane saw basically “the man beneath the mask“ & cared about/empathized w/ him, but that aspect seemed to disappear when she returned to Hartfield & it felt like it was more on her regretting Dixon/Knightley instead of embracing Frank. 3y
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks Absolutely. Even on the last but one page she was somewhat bitter about Mr Knightley choosing Emma. 3y

I wanted so much to like this because I adore Aiken's Wolves Chronicles & think she's a splendid writer. But this largely fell flat. It started off promising, but the thing about remaking Austen is that you're inevitably held to her high standards. I found Jane judgmental & lacking in humour & wit. Perhaps Aiken would have written a different book if she could imagine the characters differently. In trying to make them Austenesque, she stumbled.

batsy Also Jane & Frank's relationship in this depiction somehow felt worse than in the original, & that just largely left me feeling both icky & sad about the whole thing. I did find Rachel quite an interesting character & would have liked her to have a less generic storyline & maybe become the political cartoonist she wanted to be?! 😆 #pemberlittens @sprainedbrain 3y
LiteraryinPA Great review! 3y
rubyslippersreads I thought it was odd that Jane had a crush on Mr. Knightley and more than a crush on Matt Dixon, but still liked Frank Churchill well enough to enter into a secret engagement. 3y
batsy @rubyslippersreads I found it odd, as well. I had a hard time understanding what exactly motivates Jane and what kind of man she'd be drawn to—it all seemed so random, because Aiken already had a cast of characters to work with and just had to fit them into slots. 3y

This was a fun exploration of Jane Fairfax's world, and even though I don't feel it left me with any new or different insights into Austen's world, I enjoyed being swept along with the story. The only complaint I have is that the ending felt too rushed; I would have liked to see more of how Jane's love grew, or if not love, I'd have liked to see a practical realization that Frank was her best option. But even so, I'd recommend it! #PemberLittens

I‘m not good at buddy reading when I haven‘t already read the book… so I finished early.

I really liked this story, especially the background parts before we join the events of Emma. The writing was pretty decent (especially when compared to some other Austen continuations I‘ve read), and I just love Jane Fairfax. It even made me like Frank just a little tiny bit. 😂 I wasn‘t super thrilled with how abruptly it ended.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Book 2 is really clipping along! I enjoyed seeing the other side of the great piano mystery, even though I don't like Frank any more through Jane's eyes than I did through Emma's. But all in all, I think this retelling is a lot of fun and it's keeping me wanting to finish it all in one go. I'm trying to maintain a #chapteraday, but we'll see! #PemberLittens

OK, OK, so I know today's chapter was a literal turning point in the story...but I cannot get over the absurdity of this line which, for some reason, took me out of the story entirely. Now all I want are books about a woman asking this very question. I want a political cartoonist internal conflict in every bit of romance, literary fiction, and fantasy that I consume. 😂 #PemberLittens

Texreader That is a bit jarring! 😂 3y
LeahBergen Say what now? 😆 3y
batsy I had the same reaction! And then wanted this book to go down that line of Rachel becoming a political cartoonist 😆 3y

Mr. Dixon completes a heroic act today! I really like that the author played with my expectations of what "saving's Jane life" really was. Did anyone else feel like it was a clever turnabout? I'd taken this backstory at face value for so long; who else enjoyed Jane's "no biggie" attitude about it? #PemberLittens

It's been a while since I have done a #WeeklyForecast - things got really busy & then I found myself in a bit of a reading slump for a couple of weeks. It used to fuss me when that happened, but now I just indulge in terrible P&P variations, play some Red Dead Redemption 2, & wait for the reading urge to grab me again, which it invariably does lol I have been keeping up on my plethora of chapter-a-day reads (on the right) & enjoying them for ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) most part. I'm learning a lot about Moroccan culture for #FoodandLit, thoroughly enjoying Jane Fairfax, Harry Potter, & Narnia for those various buddy reads (#PemberLittens, #PotteraDay, #NarniaReadalong), although The Last Battle is always so hard for me to read!! The Little Mermaid, which also includes several other Anderson fairy tales, I'm just reading as the mood strikes me - the lavish interactive illustrations by MinaLima are ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) just delightful. Jane Austen Made Me Do It is a collection of short stories by various authors that are all Austen-influenced. I'm about halfway through & none of them have been above a 3* read for me - most of them are just kind of pointless & uninteresting. Upcoming reads for just me - the next batch of 87th Precinct books (SO CLOSE to being done with this 55 book series!), my pick for the new round of #LMPBC, a pick from my ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) #NewYearWhoDis list, & a Little Mermaid variation for the #FairyTaleReadalong. Looking forward to getting back into the swing of checking books off the TBR, especially considering my #BookSpinBingo list so far this month consists of three DNFs & all five free spaces! 😂

Bookwormjillk Too bad about Jane Austen Made Me Do It because that is an AMAZING title. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - Right?? And I actually give JAFF a really wide leeway as far as what I find entertaining/fun to read, but so far these have been kind of universally boring. There have been a couple of fun ones, like a Persuasion story telling how Admiral& Mrs. Croft met, but there have also been a couple where JA's ghost comes to magically help a modern author, or a bizarre one where JA helps save some military secrets from a spy?? Just weird lol 3y

In today‘s chapter, Jane returned to London and had the pleasure of meeting Rachel‘s nasty grandma, who has the effect of making the Campbells avoid their own home but still seem like far better people than Grandmama. Loved the way the author kept describing the battles in the household. 😅

Bookwormjillk Ugh, she‘s terrible 3y
eeclayton I was a little confused about this chapter. Towards the end, the narrator says that Mr Campbell suspects that Mrs Fitzroy tasked her maid to sell the bracelet and implicate Sukey. But why would Mrs F want to get rid of the very maid she'd insisted on employing for her granddaughter? Why not implicate Jane Fairfax instead? 🤔 3y
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - I thought the same thing. I feel like Mrs. F's maid was acting independently, stealing the smaller stuff to set up Sukey so that she could get away with stealing/pawning the bracelet. 3y

eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks That makes way more sense! 3y
sprainedbrain @eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks I agree with the two of you… I think Fleury acted alone, but Col. Campbell just really, really dislikes his mother in law and thinks the worst of her. I learned a new word today in chapter 4 of our Jane Fairfax buddy read. I don‘t remember which of those hobbledehoys Rachel ends up, but they have arrived on the London scene.

I loved Rachel‘s caricatures and how Jane stuck up for her to Mr. Campbell (what a jerk), and it‘s bittersweet that Jane got to go home to Highbury, only to realize she can‘t be really happy there anymore—she‘s misses her city life. 😊

Another longer chapter today! Poor little Jane, displaced from Highbury to live with strangers. I thought this chapter was really well done and loved to see Jane taking charge of things a little. The Campbells are an interesting bunch. Loved this bit about the governess!

Jane embarks on life with the Campbells! I have to say that I never envisioned the dynamic within the Campbell family that Aiken presents, but I'm intrigued. Jane shows her backbone, advising on her own education, proper placement of a piano, and - much to the dismay of the governess- talking to men (!) on the street (!!!). Of course the men in question are Knightley, Weston, and drumroll...Frank Churchill! So no harm done. #PemberLittens

Reading chapter 2 among the wildflowers today! Jane gets an invitation to come to London- perhaps permanently. Young Jane's sadness at leaving Highbury- and her aunt and grandmother- was touching, as were the residents of Highbury who contributed goods to help Jane get off to a good start in her new life. Emma was, of course, eager to "help" by giving Jane all of her cast-offs and least-wanted items. ? #PemberLittens

I really liked today‘s chapter, and was tempted to keep going. Fortunately, I have a watch party tonight and enough other books going that I managed to put Jane down. 😊

Jane has the opportunity to leave Highbury for London and the Campbells, which we knew would come. ⬇️

sprainedbrain I thought it was lovely how Emma wanted to send a nice dress and her writing desk to Jane, and how Emma seems to really think/hope it‘s a fairytale situation for Jane. I also loved Jane‘s melancholy about leaving the town and people, and her kind thoughts about Emma. And Mr. Woodhouse being Mr. Woodhouse. 😅 3y
Bookwormjillk I liked this one too. It‘s nice that the chapters are longer. Gives me a chance to really get into it. 3y

Today we kicked off this journey, and I'm really excited about it! This author's sequel to Mansfield Park was one of the better adaptations I read, and I'm hoping her Emma prequel is just as good. Hi, buddy readers! Today is chapter one, if you‘re following the chapter-a-day schedule. These chapters are longer than in Emma, but I still found it a quick read.

The cover of my book refers to Jane Fairfax as ‘the second heroine‘ in Emma, and I like that. Although dear Emma was certainly the star of Austen‘s novel, I found myself rooting for Jane a lot.

I‘m not doing chapter summaries, but will comment thoughts/questions below.

#PemberLittens

sprainedbrain I like the style the author is using… it matches up nicely with Austen‘s, but I kept getting a little lost with dates and ages at the beginning and a few word choices seemed odd to me. I have GOT to stop comparing authors to Austen, even when they are basing their books on her characters. 🤣 3y
sprainedbrain I enjoyed seeing Mrs. Woodhouse as a character, and how kind she is to young Jane. I also appreciated the glimpse at how little Emma was affected by the loss of her mother. I love that Jane tried to be a friend and comfort her (after all, Jane knows a little about losing parents, for heavens sakes). 3y
sprainedbrain It‘s so sad that Jane really longs for a friend, and how excited she is to think that Emma wants her as a friend at last, only to have that bubble burst. I‘m a little worried that all of my hard-won love for Emma as a character is being put to the test by going back see the beginnings of selfish, spoiled, proud Emma. 😬 3y
See All 13 Comments
sprainedbrain I do love to see Mr. Knightley being very Mr. Knightley, and I was thrilled to get a nice long paragraph of Miss Bates chatter. 😂 (edited) 3y
mklong I was worried that she would make Emma a monster and poor Jane her unwitting victim, but I appreciated how sympathetic she was to Emma. Even when Emma was behaving poorly, we are reminded that she is a child who just lost her mother with a father who only wants to be alone in his grief, it‘s little wonder that Emma was jealous of the affection that her mother showed Jane. 3y
sprainedbrain @mklong yes! I like that and I like that Jane isn‘t a victim at all. 3y
Bookwormjillk I cringed when Mr. Knightley hired Emma‘s governess 3y
mklong @sprainedbrain Absolutely. So far, I like the way she is shading these characters 3y
mklong @Bookwormjillk Same! I don‘t like reminders not just of their age difference, but that he knew her as a child 3y
TheAromaofBooks I feel like she does a great job setting the groundwork for why neither Emma nor Jane wants to be friends with the others, while not making either of them the “bad guy“ - those childhood impressions/prejudices can be very strong, especially when there isn't an adult around to help the child see the bigger picture, and I think Aiken captures that so well. @sprainedbrain @mklong 3y
batsy Like the others I liked the way Aiken maps out the personalities of the two girls & how they orbit around each other in this weird way. There's something quite realistic about how two girls with different temperaments & backgrounds & social class have this kind of distance that can't quite be easily overcome. I find the prose a bit mannered but I realise it's tough to emulate the greats like Austen :) 3y
batsy @Bookwormjillk Me too! That age difference really sticks out in this telling 😖 3y

Book a day from my shelves, including random thoughts - Day 2 -

I haven't read this one since 2013, but am definitely planning to reread when the #PemberLittens get to Emma, as I remember it being an intriguing take on the story. Aiken is one of those authors who has written books I love (including an all-time childhood favorite) and books that I hate, meaning I never know what to expect!

ferskner Same for me re: Joan Aiken! I adore The Wolves of Willoughby Chase but have hated some others. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - Yes!! Wolves will be tomorrow's book and it's SUCH a favorite. A few years ago I read the rest of the “series“ for the first time and I absolutely hated several of those books - some of them were just so gratuitously violent and strange - they felt incredibly inappropriate for children's stories, not to mention that the actual plots just didn't really work for me. Ah well, not every book is for every person!! 5y
ferskner Oh wow! I know I read a few more but maybe that's why I never finished them. They definitely didn't live up to the first one, but so few do. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - Plus they just didn't really have anything to do with the original characters from Wolves, which made me sad right off the bat haha 5y

To prolong that Austen feeling when you've read all or most of Austen, here is Lizzie Skurnick on Joan Aiken's Austen spinoff novels. I loved Aiken's Wolves Chronicles series for children but was worried about whether these books would measure up to Austen's work. Skurnick makes a wonderful case for Aiken's books and I hope to give them a try: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/07/14/books/review/joan-aiken-jane-austen-spinof... #janeausten200
