Witches of America
Witches of America | Alex Mar
37 posts | 26 read | 46 to read
"Witches are gathering."When most people hear the word "witches," they think of horror films and Halloween, but to the nearly one million Americans who practice Paganism today, witchcraft is a nature-worshipping, polytheistic, and very real religion. So Alex Mar discovers when she sets out to film a documentary and finds herself drawn deep into the world of present-day magic.Witches of America follows Mar on her immersive five-year trip into the occult, charting modern Paganism from its roots in 1950s England to its current American mecca in the San Francisco Bay Area; from a gathering of more than a thousand witches in the Illinois woods to the New Orleans branch of one of the world's most influential magical societies. Along the way she takes part in dozens of rituals and becomes involved with a wild array of characters: a government employee who founds a California priesthood dedicated to a Celtic goddess of war; American disciples of Aleister Crowley, whose elaborate ceremonies turn the Catholic mass on its head; second-wave feminist Wiccans who practice a radical separatist witchcraft; a growing "mystery cult" whose initiates trace their rites back to a blind shaman in rural Oregon. This sprawling magical community compels Mar to confront what she believes is possible-or hopes might be.With keen intelligence and wit, Mar illuminates the world of witchcraft while grappling in fresh and unexpected ways with the question underlying every faith: Why do we choose to believe in anything at all? Whether evangelical Christian, Pagan priestess, or atheist, each of us craves a system of meaning to give structure to our lives. Sometimes we just find it in unexpected places.

When making a documentary film about non-mainstream religions, Alex Mar grew intrigued by paganism/witchcraft. She decided to delve into it personally and chronicles her experiences here. I really like the history and anthropology she mixes in, and wish there was more of that, but I appreciate the memoir as well. I have no interest or belief in witchcraft personally, and this was a good match for me to learn more.

Cinfhen True!!! I‘m intrigued and I‘ve previously stacked but I‘m cautious of the low Litsy rating 🙄 6y
arlenefinnigan @Cinfhen I found it really interesting. It's certainly flawed as a piece of investigative journalism (she gets far too involved with the subject) but it's a fascinating insight. 6y

Fascinating topic. It starts off as almost an anthropological study in paganism and turns in to the author‘s search for religion. While I did find a lot it interesting, the tone of the author seems almost bored and almost like she is making fun of the subject.

So recently I've kinda been into the idea of witchiness. I've done full and new moon rituals and just paid attention to moon cycles in general. Also, I own a black cat. 😏 I wanted to read something as an intro to different types of witchcraft to maybe find something that interests me. This wasn't the book for me tho.

IAmNerdyMe I might have a book or 2 for you, but I'll have to dig around in storage. 8y
arlenefinnigan I enjoyed but there were parts I was thinking "I'm not sure investigative journalism should be this immersive" and "well that's just inappropriate". 8y
hike.read.repeat @IAmNerdyMe cool! There was another one that I checked out at the same time from SA that looked good but I'm out of time with it. 😭 8y
hike.read.repeat @arlenefinnigan exactly! It seemed like she just studied the sects that interested her which is fine but the description and title are totally misleading. Granted, paganism is way too vast to be fairly represented in 300 pg book but still. 8y

I really liked parts of this book but it felt too much like a memoir of a person that I didn't care too much to know about. It was interesting that she delved so deep into the world of modern-day witches but some of her writing was uninteresting to me.

An interesting look at modern strains of witchcraft and paganism in America. I had some questions/concerns about methodology and sincerity, but I did appreciate her honesty and felt I learned a lot. #RogueBookBingo

Sadly, I couldn't get into this one. I was super excited about the topic but really didn't care for the author and how much she inserted herself into the story. It also felt completely distant and dry for being such a fascinating topic. Disappointing.

I may still need to decorate my tree but at least I have some good reading material ready. #bookhaul finally arrived from the Book Outlet. Super excited about the good deals I found. 😍👍

EnidBiteEm Oooh, please let me know what you think of the last policeman. I'm not much of a crime reader unless I adore the characters, but I've heard some very high praise of this novel, plus the dawning apocalypse is an intriguing intro ... 8y
Zelma @EnidBiteEm will do! I'm not into crime either but I liked his recent book The Underground Railroad and this one has been highly praised. 👍 8y
EnidBiteEm Thanks 😀I thought that was by Colson Whithead? Or is one of them a pseudonym?? 8y

AnnieReads City on Fire was one of my Book Outlet purchases. I really enjoyed The Last Policeman. 8y
Zelma @EnidBiteEm 😳 you're right. I meant Underground Airlines! 8y
Zelma @AnnieReads I couldn't believe how cheap City on Fire was! And it allowed me to give my borrowed copy back to my friend. 😆 8y
LauraBeth So much for that $2 million advance the publisher paid for City On Fire! I want to read it though and came THIS close to checking it out today while at the library 8y
Zelma @LauraBeth well it was a used copy. Mine has a tear in the cover. 😉 8y
AnnieReads I was in the fence about reading City on Fire. It was so super cheap so I was convinced to give it a try. The Thanksgiving sale was my first time to order from Book Outlet. Wowza! I ended up with a massive book haul. 8y
Zelma @AnnieReads 😆 I had to edit my order because it was getting too big. I tried to pick titles that were unavailable at the library and/or I didn't was to read on my nook. 8y
BookishMarginalia Lovely #bookhaul! @EnidBiteEm @Zelma @AnnieReads I also also have City on Fire on my TBR and I'm curious about The Last Policeman trilogy, but I've held off because apocalyptic/dystopian fiction is really not my thing. Let me know how you like it. (I know AnnieReads votes 👍🏼) (edited) 8y
EnidBiteEm Thanks for the clarification 😀I hadn't read either so I was unsure 😀 8y

Fascinating book. Reading it as a cynic means a lot of raised eyebrows but it's certainly thought provoking. The writing's excellent, especially when she's describing the rituals. Not sure how 'immersive' research like this should be but it gives a great insight.

Really enjoyed this look at modern-day paganism and the journey the author goes on to see what she believes. I especially enjoyed reading about some of the practices that have wrongfully been called demonic or evil by people outside the pagan world, as well as how modern pagans deal with those who DO pervert occult practices.

"But I am talking about how, in a singular situation, at a singular time--at the witching hour, if you will--a person can find herself thoroughly unsettled. At such a moment, the weakest part of you floats up through viscous liquid, up through your gut, your intestines, your fleshy arteries, through the very source points of your wateriest emotions, as unstable as water. Anything becomes possible, and a person finds she is capable of many things."

The Salem Witch Trials began this day in 1692. I read about them as a kid - it's one of those areas of American history that still fascinates me. Salem is still one of my favorite places I've visited, and I really enjoyed hearing Alex Mar speak earlier this year about modern witches!

brendanmleonard I'm also really interested in the idea of a "witch hunt" a la McCarthyism, so I might post some reccs on those later! 9y
rachelm Neat! Pass them along! 9y
ramblingsofareader Yes! I love Salem, it's so pretty! I'm also super interested in that period of history (& I love The Crucible, despite its historical inaccuracies). I'm actually doing a project on McCarthyism/The Crucible so I'll look out for your recs! 9y

It had its ups and downs, but overall was an interesting read. I found some of the chapters boring and I get the sense that Alex disguises a lot of her conniving as just being a "formless, lost girl." Maybe I'm morbid, but I was disappointed that more page time wasn't dedicated to the corpse guy.

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about this book. I'm classifying it as a memoir, and Alex and I don't always agree. I don't know if I can trust her. I sympathize with her draw to the liminal, but is that impetuous enough?

Shortstack Is the intent of the book to have an unreliable narrator? Because that can be enjoyable. However, not as much when the intent is to be reliable and they still seem untrustworthy. 9y
