A stunning debut perfect for fans of Patrick Ness and Neil Gaiman! The Dank is a wild, treacherous river, and the Fobisher family has tended it for generations--clearing it of ice and weed, making sure boats can get through, and fishing corpses from its bleak depths. Wulliam's father, the current Riverkeep, is proud of this work. Wull dreads it. And in one week, when he comes of age, he will have to take over. Then the unthinkable happens. While recovering a drowned man, Wull's father is pulled under--and when he emerges, he is no longer himself. A dark spirit possesses him, devouring him from the inside. In an instant, Wull is Riverkeep. And he must care for his father, too. When he hears that a cure for his father lurks in the belly of a great sea-dwelling beast known as the mormorach, he embarks on an epic journey down the river that his family has so long protected--but never explored. Along the way, he faces death in any number of ways, meets people and creatures touched by magic and madness and alchemy, and finds courage he never knew he possessed. Martin Stewart's debut novel is an astonishing blend of the literary, the comedic, and the emotionally resonant. In a sentence, it's The Wizard of Oz as told by Patrick Ness. It marks the beginning of a remarkable career.

Not book related just wanted to share the view from my parking spot today. I don‘t usually get to park in the river lot but I broke the rules and did today. 😁 @Andrew65 @tracey38

Andrew65 Lovely view, thanks for sharing. I‘m missing being able to drive to rivers, lakes or the sea, parking up and reading. (edited) 5y
CocoReads I realized I haven‘t been taking advantage of the river nearly enough and am thinking when things are better, I‘ll be doing some walking/reading in the parks. 5y
Andrew65 @CocoReads That‘s how we usually spend our weekends in Autumn, Spring and Summer. 5y
tracey38 Nice! I hope you are able to take advantage when you can! 5y

And last, but definitely not least, #BookMail from the kind and wonderful @Yournewfriendsams ❤️ She and I have gotten extremely close over this last year and I am amazed at her strength and genuine character. She completely surprised me with a Kindle, case (with Dumbos on it!), stylus, a Dumbo bookmark and Christmas ornament, HP postcard colouring book all for my birthday & for Christmas a hardback of a book that sounds wonderful! Thank you, Sam❤️

BooksTeasAndBookishThings To continue, Sam, I am so grateful to call you Friend and honoured that you cherish our friendship as much as I do. Your card was beautiful and warmed my heart so very much ❤️❤️❤️ 7y

I actually picked this book up for my daughter and I decided to read it because of the interesting premise. It ended up being totally different from anything I've read before, in a good way. The story flows just like the meandering of a river and Wull, the main character, grows up along the way. It's really a hard coming of age story. The world was similar to ours in many ways and yet there is just enough magic to make it different. #bookstagram

Panpan

I feel a bit bad saying pan because it's not a bad book exactly - some bits are really beautifully written and I enjoyed the characters.
The issue is it feels like a really unfinished book. Loads of plot lines are introduced and only one is followed through (and even then to a disappointing climax.)

SockieLady I went with So-So, but I agree with you that it felt unfinished. I mean, what happens to Mix, Remedie, and Bonn? They just run off and that's it? I'm glad that Wull was able to rescue Mr. Tillinghast, though. 7y
Hearthstone @SockieLady yeah! Im not sure why mix and remedie were even in the story, exactly. They had their own stories, sure, but there wasn't much they contributed to the main plot. 7y

Y'all this book is wild. It has a Neverwhere vibe to it, the story is not at all the same but the lightly dark and grotesque aspects are there. Monsters of all kinds, homunculus, bandits... I'm throughly enjoying it! My perfect level of creepy.

Johanna414 I've had a few students check this out this year and really enjoy it 8y

This is a somewhat creepy book of magic, mythical creatures and weird characters. The only problem I had was that it took a while to pick up - only in the last third did the story really 'fly'. That's a shame as the first few pages had drawn me into the story world quite quickly but then the whole quest motif became a bit schematic for a while (think Wizard of Oz). It does show the writer's potential though and I look forward to his next book. :)

rabbitprincess Great cover though! 8y

Like tales of hunting a mythical beast? Magic? Epic journeys? This a sad, yet hopeful, story of a young man who doesn't want the life he sees before him but finds, by attempting to save the life of his father, the life he's meant for is more than he thought. The author chose to use an old English type of language so there's lots of odd spellings but that adds to the story.

This started out slow for me, and I thought I was going to struggle. But once it got going, and more characters were introduced (maybe slightly too many?), I really enjoyed it. And the relationship between Wull and his dad was beautiful.

BookBabe Nice color-coordination! 😉👌🏻 8y

Utterly thrilling, magical, and made me cackle on the subway. Suffice it to say, this one feels like a longtime favorite even though it's brand new!
