Corduroy is a classic novel. This adorable heartwarming story that all children should be exposed to in their life time. The illustrations are incredible and beautifully colored. The illustrations are in more of a sketch like drawings and the colors used in the illustrations are calm and inviting. The images on the pages don't take up the whole page but are detailed enough that you don't even need to read the words.

My parents and older siblings read to me. (I‘m 15, 17 & 19 years younger than my siblings) One of my earliest memories is of my mom reading Corduroy to me. It‘s still my favorite picture book.

In Corduroy, the illustrator used lightness to help the viewer distinguish the different times of day in which the story takes place. At the beginning of the book, the illustrator uses lighter color to portray that the story is taking place during the day. At night, the illustrator uses darker, more ominous colors to portray that it was night time and the toys were coming to life.

While the next coat of paint dries on the #littlefreelibrary I thought I'd set this outside. Another family dropped off another wagon load of books yesterday. I'm not even sure when I'll be able to have a grand opening, meanwhile the stash of books is getting higher.

KrisNelson Okay, here‘s my problem…due to the pandemic, my kids‘ checkouts are mostly light and fluffy, which I understand. But the books that are coming out are mostly heavy and deep, and my rural kids wouldn‘t choose them. If I only had Wimpy Kids, Dog Man, and graphic novels…I could clear out the rest of my library. 3y
mandarchy @KrisNelson they definitely do not have the stamina for books like we did. Their parents aren't really reading either. They need light fun stuff. More Dog Man! 3y
KrisNelson I‘ve got a million books that I‘m clearing out of my back room if you need more. No one ever uses the Literature Circles books anymore! 3y

This F, RA White Read Aloud award winning picture book is beloved by many! The theme of this book is hope and perseverance. Corduroy is a teddy bear that lives in a department store who has struggled to be purchased. Because of a lost button on his overalls, a young girl is unable to convince her mom to buy him. In the end, both corduroy and the young girl hold out hope and work towards finding a solution to their problems. #UCFLAE3414SP21

This RA lesson plan from Weebly provides great discussion questions for Corduroy. UDL Principle 5.3 and EL Strategy 12 about building fluencies through language and content correlates with read aloud discussions of the text.

DrSpalding This is a classic story that should be read in all primary classrooms. Believe it or not this was one of the first books to include an African-American child as the main character. Written And Illustrated by Don Freeman
#UCFLAE3414SU2020
This book is a MF book about a little teddy bear who is curious about the world. I believe that this book would best be used as an IR in the classroom.
UDL: Support planning and strategy development (6.2.)
ESOL: 29. Offer a variety of reference materials at the students‘ instructional level
for independent use

DrSpalding Again, your resources and teaching strategy don‘t quite align. Just listing the English learner and universal design principles don‘t show how you would connect all of these elements. A little more detail is needed. 4y

One of the first books to inspire my love for reading as a child was “Corduroy” by Donald Freeman. This beloved bear captured my heart wanting a friend of his own. A little girl named Lisa see Corduroy and instantly falls in love and wants to bring him home. Unfortunately, her mother sees that he is flawed and refuses. Read this inspiring TL story to find out if Corduroy finds happiness.

Mazzole18 Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation through URL 9.1. ESOL strategy 16 integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities can be incorporated in this lesson. Check out this cross curricular math activity that can be used with the story at https://www.icanteachmychild.com/corduroy-math-learning-with-buttons/ . You could also use this book as a RT and create Corduroy puppets. (edited) 4y
JessicaO I really appreciate you sharing the connection that you had with this book! I remember reading corduroy as well and it is just such a cute book. Students will love hearing this story just as we did. There are several activities that you can do with this book, so I appreciate you giving one that is even about math. I will be reading this book to my future students! 4y
DrSpalding This beloved bear has captured many hearts! There are several books featuring this main character. Isn‘t it wonderful that you can teach other content areas like math with quality children‘s literature? The resource with the Bears and buttons are visually appealing and educational! 4y

Corduroy is a MF book that should be in all classrooms! Corduroy, the bear who lives in a toy store goes on a mission to find his missing button so someone will take him home. Will he ever find his button? Will he be caught looking for it? Read to find out.
The National Education Association named Corduroy one of the Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children.

AshleyH This is another great choice for a read-aloud in the younger elementary grades. Listening to this book, students will learn to never lose hope, just like corduroy never lost hope in that someone would end up taking him home someday.

Website Resource: https://www.rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/PictureBooks-CommonCor...
This resource gives the idea to have students practice retelling the story to their classmates.

AshleyH UDL- Guide information processing and visualization (3.3)
Students will be able to visualize the story by looking at the illustrations.

This book brings back so many memories! It‘s about a bear named Corduroy that is in a mall and he just wants an owner! He adventures through the mall when he realizes his button on his outfit is missing. It‘s an easy enough read that it should be good for IR. Don Freeman‘s classic character, Corduroy, in which a bear leaves the safety of his department store shelf in order to do almost anything to be adopted by a little girl. This RF fiction book would be great for a LC to discuss the adventures on Corduroy.

LeahH UDL: promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation (9.1)- have the kids use their imagination to put themselves in the bears shoes. EL: #13- ‘use preview and review activities‘. The class could make their own Corduroy adventure either before or after they read the book. 5y

This book is a classic. The tale of a little bear missing a button and wants a home but nobody wants to buy him. Corduroy won the Indies Choice Book Award. This Fantasy book is great for a Read Aloud. Readeritethink.org has a couple classroom resources available. One of my favorites is letting one student take a stuffed bear home each night and recording their “adventures” together. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Tabitha_H To include ESOL I would recommend #17 which is Provide contextual support through audio, visuals, models demonstrations etc. Great for the listening center in the classroom. A UDL principle to apply would be 7.2, Optimize relevance, value and authenticity. 5y
charlotteclancy I loved this book as a child! I liked the activity you paired with it, too. Having students work on this at home will bring even more excitement to the story! 5y
DrSpalding This is an excellent example of animal fantasy. It would make a good listening station in a primary classroom. There are more Corduroy books in the series. Use them all. 5y

“Corduroy“ by Don Freeman, 1968. Picture book. This is a very cute classic story. It's about a little bear named Corduroy who looses his overall button and goes on a search looking for it. At the end of the story, a little girl buys him and sews him a new button. This story is appealing to children because a lot of kids have a bear or other stuffed animal they hold very near and dear to them.
