This phenomenal award winning NF-RA book is an absolute must read 💫 It talks about her life and how her and her family are advocates for equal rights for disabled. It goes into detail on the steps they took throughout her journey to make it all the way to the top not taking no for an answer! This would be such an amazing book to include in the classroom for so many reasons📚 #UCFLAE3414SP21

I love this book because it is so culturally diverse and contains both Spanish and English inside. But not only that, it is a Pura Belpré Award winner! This MF-LC book is great for LC because you can group the students in groups of English and Spanish speaking students and they can all help each other fully understand the book with group discussions! DrSpalding This is such a beautiful and current award-winning book. As you know, I own this one and would love to make fry bread. While this book certainly screams social studies it also could be integrated into a math lesson by extending the book with a cooking activity. We provided multiple copies of this book to teachers this week in Seminole County on the Knights Read bus! Excellent post. 4y

The Caldecott Honor book Outside In is a fantastic RA-RF book to read to your students. It is a lovely story of a girl who explains that we sometimes forget that the outside is right there begging us to go play instead of sitting inside sad! Throughout the story she explains the different hidden ways the outside try‘s to get our attention to go outside. The hidden messages are amazing and I love this book so much. #UCFLAE3414SP21

It is similar to the Underground Railroad, but the families board an overground railroad on their way to the north for freedom. It tells a sweet story of a family escaping their ‘picking‘ lives to go to New York to live a great free life. I absolutely LOVE this NF-RA book Hurricane Watch. Not only is it informative but it is entertaining and engaging! Which is exactly what we are looking for. The more engaging, the more the students will retain the information. Some things I love about this book are the little ‘did you know?‘ notes on the sides, the pictures with descriptions of what is happening at that point of the hurricane, #UCFLAE3414SP21

After reading aloud and allowing the students to shout out the letters, you could have your students create their own, creative alphabet book by integrating the arts. Place the book in your classroom library and I guarantee your students will gravitate to the books they have created. This fosters the idea that they are young authors! 4y

Sometimes everyone needs a Little Spot of Happiness! And Diane Alber (as always) does a fantastic job of incorporating SEL into RF-RA books. This series caught my attention from the beginning, I had to buy the whole collection! This book teaches children that a little spot of happiness needs to grow and grow in order for it to be a big spot, and take the place of the big angry spot. #UCFLAE3414SP21

One example is putting a little yellow spot on the students hand to remind themselves to spread kindness and happiness around, then the spot will grow! As you enter your future classroom, sadly due to the pandemic, many children will be experiencing the lasting affects of trauma due to what the world has endured. 4y

This picture book is cute and fun while engaging the students to also keep an eye out for baby fox (hint: baby fox is on every page hidden!) The “who was” books are amazing for B-IR reads. Who was Helen Keller? A great, detailed explanation book that gives great detail on Helen‘s life from beginning to end, without being too complicated for young students to read. As you read, you will learn about how/when Helen got the sickness, what methods her parents tried, the obstacles they went through, and a special person who came into Helen‘s life who will change it forever. #UCFLAE3414SP21

DrSpalding Read write think was one of the highly encouraged resources. You truly paid attention and applied your learning to this project. You are missing some English learner strategy numbers however the one you noted certainly works. Most of these books have timelines embedded in the back matter. English learner strategy 28, providing biographies is also an excellent strategy to include with all great biography books. 4y

A well-written story about an 11-year-old girl with a much blended family. Mercy Watson Fights Crime is a great short MF-S novel for the class. It has a great story line that keeps the attention of the students! A lesson that can be taken from this story is if you are mindful and unproblematic, good things come back to you! All Mercy wanted was some toast, and toast she got.

Spearsall continued: UDL‘s 1.2 “offer alternatives for auditory information” can be applied here with an audio book while doing a read aloud with the class. This alternative is necessary for literacy as well. ESOL strategies include: link lesson topic to students prior knowledge, encourage self talk, promote cooperation, & continually monitor students comprehension. When Matt Dela Peña posted a picture of his daughter with this title, knowing that he is a Newbery award winning author… I knew this was a book I had to own. While performing the read aloud you can use products such as a comb, hair brush, hair tie, and much more to offer other visuals for students. By doing this we also include our EL strategies: teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. 4y
