A 2020 Caldecott Honor Book From the New York Times best-selling author behind The Quiet Book comes a mindful contemplation on the many ways nature affects our everyday lives, even when were stuck inside. Five starred reviews! Perfect for fans of Joyce Sidman and Julie Fogliano, Outside In reminds emerging readers of the ways nature creates and touches our lives in homes, apartments, and cars, and is the perfect homeschooling tool to reflect on the worlds connectedness. Outside is waiting, the most patient playmate of all. The most generous friend. The most miraculous inventor. This thought-provoking picture book poetically underscores our powerful and enduring connection with nature, not so easily obscured by lives spent indoors. Rhythmic, powerful language shows us how our world is made and the many ways Outside comes in to help and heal us, and reminds us that we are all part of a much greater universe. Emotive illustrations evoke the beauty, simplicity, and wonder that await us all . . . outside.

When way I would use this book is to help students understand our environment and why we should take better care of it. You could form many writing prompts off of this book.

One quote from Outside In by Deborah Underwood is: “We forget Outside is waiting, the sound of the wind and the song of the birds. We forget that outside is there, waiting... but outside is always there.“ This captures the theme of the book that nature is patiently waiting for us to reconnect with it.

Outside in published in 2020 is an incredible story about how the outside is not as far as we may believe it is. The lines are breathtaking and the illustrations look like art. It is stated in the book that the illustrator uses dried flower stems and thread to create some of the lines. Absolutely beautiful.

I call books like this "gazing books". Take your time and savor the illustrations. On pages like this, it takes a lot of background knowledge to appreciate the significance of the message. #everybodybooks

The Caldecott Honor book Outside In is a fantastic RA-RF book to read to your students. It is a lovely story of a girl who explains that we sometimes forget that the outside is right there begging us to go play instead of sitting inside sad! Throughout the story she explains the different hidden ways the outside try‘s to get our attention to go outside. The hidden messages are amazing and I love this book so much. #UCFLAE3414SP21

Spearsall Continued: UDL principle 8.1 heighten salience of goals and objectives is used in this book as well as ESPL strategy teaching questioning for clarification. https://www.google.com/amp/s/wakingbraincells.com/2020/09/28/outside-in-by-debor... I recommend looking at this link as well!! 🐝 4y

DrSpalding Wow... your resource is excellent. The first paragraph spoke to me and I made personal connections to what we have experienced the last year with Covid. Clearly a beautiful book having won the Caldecott award! This could be used in many ways in your future classroom. 4y

Caldecott 2021 book it shows us all the wonderful things that “outside” shows while we‘re inside us such as bird, the sun , and the rain . It also tells us when you wake up and go to bed . All the wonderful things that outside brings to us even inside. The book could be used as a RA and the UDL can be 7.2 using ESOL 22 and 30 since this is a picture book you can have students create visuals of their favorite things to do outside. #ucflae3414sp21

DrSpalding Angela, you completed 10 posts as required. Go back and look at the rubric to see how you should cite the English learner strategies and universal design principles. Remember that you only need one of each and that you must explain how they align to your resource/teaching strategy. You must cite the number and the verbiage for EL/UDL. 4y
